Cautionary tale for the Zags at the WCC tourney!

The 2003–04 Saint Joseph's Hawks men's basketball team was 30-0 going into their conference tourney, including a win over Gonzaga. They were ranked #1 in the nation.

They proceeded to lose their first round game in the Atlantic 10 tourney by 20 points, and it wasn't even that close.

Beat Santa Clara.....or whoever else shows up on Saturday!!!

that st.joe's team needed to lose before going into the tournament...the pressure of the undefeated season was taking a toll on that team. no such issues with this zag team. only worry is ability to peak going into the dance.

I feel confident the Zags will show up in Vegas. They've answered the call so far.

Also in 2004 Utah State was 25-2 (17-1) and ranked #22 going into their conference tournament...lost their first game to Cal State-Northridge 63-62...didn't even make the tournament, and ended up losing their first game in the NIT.

IMO Zags secured no lower than a #3 seed (still could be lowest #2) after beating Portland. Win 1st game in WCC Tourney lowest becomes a #2 seed. Win WCC tourney in Vegas we put ourselves in a good position for the #1 out west (barring some unlikely occurances). JMHO

If Kansas or Gtown somehow miraculously ever ended up #1 in the West (doubtful but not impossible) and Zags a #2 that would create a very vulnerable #1 to feast on in LA assuming of course (I do understand the reduced odds as a #2 but)...

This seems to be so fluid and ever changing. Making a stock market analogy this week was a BULL market for ticker symbol GONZ. Let us stay away from the Bears and keep on movin!

Actually, St. Joe's was 27-0 heading into their conference tourney. While they lost the first game of their tourney, they still were given a 1 seed and then proceeded to the EE before losing a tough one against Oklahoma. Meanwhile, GU was 27-2 heading into the tourney, was seeded 2, and promptly bowed out in the second round against Nevada at the Key while Uber was in attendance.

Uber would prefer St. Joe's outcome that year over GU's. Still, he would prefer a WCC conference championship, as well.

ALL of the next games are crucial !! The first win in the Vegas tourney is expected. A loss knocks us down a full seed or two, and would feel devastating. Santa Clara and BYU and SMC have all played us close one time this season. For Santa Clara and BYU their first game in the WCC tournament is probably Do or Die. St Mary's might still Dance even with an immediate loss, but dancing is much more likely if they advance to the WCC final.

Santa Clara is a sleeper alright...but the Zag team is on a mission and wearing their #1 Ranking is not something they will give away .... should see a little well earned swagger in Vegas...
