Zags’ Debate Team of Harper, Newton Qualifies for National Debate Tournament

Zags Compete for National Debate Title for 17th Consecutive Year

SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga University’s debate team of senior Tim Harper, from Ashland, Ore., and sophomore Jordon Newton, Spokane, qualified for the National Debate Tournament late Sunday night with a unanimous decision over a Weber State University team. This marks the 17th-consecutive year Gonzaga has earned a chance to compete for a national debate title.

The Zags’ victory occurred at the District 2 NDT Qualifying Tournament in Walla Walla. The team of Harper and Newton was among five teams to qualify for the NDT from District 2, which consists of colleges and universities from Washington, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah and Oregon.

In the fall (2012), Harper and Newton won the Whitman College Tournament (6-0), and advanced to the regional finals at University of Nevada Las Vegas. Last month, they advanced to the finals of the Weber State Round Robin Tournament.

Next up for the Gonzaga debaters is the Cross Examination Debate Association National Championship Tournament at Idaho State University in Pocatello March 22-26. Then, Harper and Newton will compete against 75 other teams at the National Debate Tournament March 27 through April 2 at Weber State in Ogden, Utah.

Gonzaga’s debate program is consistently among the nation’s most successful. Last spring, the team of seniors Leah Moczulski and Paul Kanellopoulos advanced to the Final Four of the NDT for the first time in University history before losing 3-2 to Northwestern University...
