BULLDOGS OPEN SEASON IN PALM SPRINGS: Gonzaga University baseball opens the 2013 season in Palm Springs, Calif., as it participates in the Palm Springs Tournament hosted by Oregon State University. Along with the Bulldogs and Beavers, Utah Valley University Wolverines and UC Riverside Highlanders will battle at Palm Springs Stadium. The Zags open the tournament with a Friday doubleheader against Utah Valley at 10 a.m., followed by UC Riverside at 4 p.m. On Saturday, Gonzaga will battle Pacific Northwest rival Oregon State at noon. GU closes out the tournament Sunday when it faces Utah Valley a second time at 10a.m.

ZAGS ON OPENING DAY: Since the 2000 season, Gonzaga University is 6-9 on the opening day of the season. Including this year, the Bulldogs have opened the season with a doubleheader three times (2001 and 2011) since 2000. In 2001, Gonzaga split the series at the University of Portland and in 2011 the Bulldogs dropped games to Oregon State University and Fresno State University. Last year, the Zags opened the season with a 7-4 victory over the University of Nebraska in Peoria, Ariz.

SCOUTING UTAH VALLEY: Utah Valley University is the three-time Great West Conference defending champions and was the 2012 national leader in batting average and winning percentage. The Wolverines were perfect in conference last year with a 28-0 mark and an overall record of 47-12. The team lost its top four hitters from that squad and will depend on shortstop Kai Hatch (.342 avg, 42 RBI) and outfielder Sean Moysh (.338 avg, 44 RBI). UVU also graduated its 10-game winning pitcher Jeremy Gendlek, but retains senior Adam Gunn (8-3, 4.10 ERA) to help fill the void.

SCOUTING UC RIVERSIDE: The Highlanders enter 2013 after a mediocre 2012. Last year, UC Riverside finished with a 22-32 record along with a 9-15 Big West record. However, the Highlanders will return all but one starter and one pitcher. Eddie Orozco is an ace on the hill who recorded over 100 strikeouts in 2012. He also hurled a complete-game three-hitter. UC Riverside finished just above future West Coast Conference member University of the Pacific in conference.

SCOUTING OREGON STATE: The Beavers of Oregon State University return an experienced and talented roster in 2013. Oregon State is ranked No. 6 by Baseball America, No. 14 by ESPN/USA Today, No. 10 by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, No. 10 by Collegiate Baseball and No. 8 by Perfect Game. OSU capped off 2012 with a 40-20 record and advancing to the final game of the Baton Rouge Regional. In the Pacific-12 conference the squad finished 18-12 to finished tied for fourth. On offense, eight starters return who accounted for 79 percent of the teams runs....
