New Conference and Nike Tourney 2017

With the talk of conference realignment -- two of the items identified as having a possibility to change the field in the 2017 Nike tournament are apparel vendor and conference affiliation.

"Hollis said the event isn't driven by Knight or Nike, but rather by the schools' athletic directors who want to express their thanks. He also acknowledged that there are a few potential factors that could derail the current list of teams in the next five years -- a change in sneaker sponsorship or conference affiliation, for example."

Schools committed to Phil Knight event
Michigan State AD Mark Hollis told ESPN.com that 16 Nike-sponsored schools have committed to participate in a two-tournament event held in honor of Phil Knight. A list of schools committed:

Which school is not like the others? Hmmmm. Again, Portland instead of St Marys? Do any schools know their 2017 recruits?

That is funny OZN b/c when I saw the list I immediately began singing the Sesame Street song in my head:

"one of these kids is doing their own thing. . . one of these kids is not like the others"

I wonder which kid it is? Oh, yeah, the "local" kid.
Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.

thats it! I was wondering what that tune was when I sang that in my head. Thanks! I guess its like Chaminade in the Maui tournament. Portland can win one if Chaminade can.

Either way it is an honor and I am not minimizing our invite nor the prestige our school has garnered. BYU is a Nike school I see.

Portland is a Nike school. SMC is an Adidas school. I'm surprised that BYU wasn't the other WCC rep, however.

Just guessing here, as Portland may have simply been the first choice (along with GU), but having the championship/consolation games on Sunday would've also been a big reason to overlook BYU.

The events would take Saturday off for college football programming, then return Sunday, with the third-place game and championship at the Rose Garden and the consolation at Veterans.

If I remember the reason Portland in is due to the fact the Nike head offices are in Portland right?.. and there the home team with the games being played at the Rose Garden.

                  NIke is from Portland

Since they started in Oregon, I think that Portland is the same type as many organizations that fund tournaments.

Technically -- Meikle and Edwards could possible play in this tourney-- if either of them redshirted a year-- right?

Maybe the Nike guys will let the Zags stay in their tourney even if we switched conferences. I mean, we are Gonzaga.

                      It's peanut butter jelly time!

Phil Knight is an Oregon guy.

Of course Portland is going to get in this thing. Nothing wrong with that.

They will be Zags next season (2013-2014) And if they redshirt they would both be ready for the 2014-2015 season.
