Gotta love Digger Phelps.

"What about Gonzaga? They beat 4, yes FOUR Big-12 teams this season. Wow."

Um, thanks for the shout-out, yet it was 5. Just FYI.

To quote the Vice President....this is a big deal...

I hear players like Kevin and Gary saying they came to Gonzaga to play on ESPN and in games like this....

Now for Gonzaga and Butler to be the featured game !!....I can imagine a lot of 7th grade boy basketball players thinking they would like to play in this kind of environment....

This has got to help recruiting....well...maybe the kids are not up this early on the West Coast, but they will be up in time for the game....

I am GREEN with envy for those Zags at the game...

And THAT ... woohoo ... is how you do it.

One shot only needed from halfcourt for the $18,000. Nice job to Kevin Schwartz.

I jotted down a few notes from Few and Stevens on Gameday. Few said he has been at Hinkle before. He, Leon Rice and others played a pickup game I believe he said when they were at a Final Four in Indy some years ago. Stevens said GU provided the blue print for how to build a program at a "mid major", a term he dislikes and said it is more because BCS schools are affiliated with high profile football programs, than it is because of the basketball played at schools like Bulter and GU. When asked about similarities of the schools basketball programs Few noted it is the culture, the continuity of the staffs, and the family type atmosphere. Also it is about player development as both schools tend to recuit and keep players for four years allowing them to mature and develop. Few also said he thinks Butler has set the "mid major" standard now with their back to back National Championship appearances. Stevens was asked the biggest challange facing Butler tonight and he said GU's depth inside, how the Zags stretch the floor. He said the abscence of Rotnie will have to be made up by committee. Few said the mid major, high major thing is something he disagees with. He called it "old school" and said programs should be evaluated on what they have done, much as the NCAA does each year when it selects teams for March Madness. They look at your body of work and don't evaluate because of the conference you are affiliated with.

I thought is was interesting when Stevens said that there were about 8 different ways to play off the high ball screen and that Gonzaga had players that knew how to do that....

I was also surprised when Few spoke up and essentially said that Digger didn't know WTF he was talking about when he said modern coaches don't use the low ball screen. Mark pointed out that if the refs don't call the tugging and grabbing inside, you have to go back out to the high ball screen.... you have to adjust to the officials.

There is a lot more going on in a game than a fan like me, is aware of...

Whoa, what?.....said there was a dispute over a foul...like there is in every pickup game...

Sigh.

I'm getting tired of this gimmick.

Win a football game, win a basketball game, win a women's swimming meet or SOMETHING and stop with the stupid flag.

Don't worry. If Kevin accepts the 18K he isn't eligible to play today.

I'm still trying to erase the image of Digger wearing a basketball jersey from my memory. It was way too early to see such things. Actually, I'm not sure it is ever necessary.
