Blanchette's column on Kelly Olynyk (http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2013/jan/11/new-look-olynyk-keeps-zags-roll/)

Olynyk has been a revelation virtually from the time he came off the code-of-conduct violation that more or less extended his redshirt year of 2012 three games into this season: 18 points a game, a shooting percentage in the high 60s, poise, aggressiveness, confidence.

“We didn’t go into the game thinking he couldn’t play,” said Saint Mary’s coach Randy Bennett. “We were prepared for him and he still did it to us.”

That said, after viewing Olynyk on tape this season and recalling what he’d seen way back in 2011 when the big Canadian was last in uniform, Bennett might have demanded DNA testing to prove Olynyk was the same person.

“I remember him,” Bennett said. “I didn’t think he was very good. He’s improved more than anybody in college basketball.

Jim Meehan's Game Story (http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2013/jan/11/zags-hang-beat-gaels-83-78/)

“Everything was clicking in the first half,” junior forward Sam Dower said. “In the second half they basically just outplayed us, killed us on the boards and made it a game. But we got the win, and that’s the only thing that matters right now.”

Gonzaga led by 20 early in the second half. Saint Mary’s Matthew Dellavedova, the 2012 WCC player of the year, was ineffective and sitting on the bench, but within 5 minutes the Gaels had cut the deficit to single digits and they pulled within 3 with 6 minutes remaining.

Contra Costa Times Game Story (http://www.contracostatimes.com/sports/ci_22353413/saint-marys-gaels-rally-second-half-but-lose)

And who knows what the outcome would have been if Matthew Dellavedova had a better shooting night. Saint Mary's never led once in this game.

Dellavedova's last shot of the night was an open-look 3-point attempt along the left side of the floor. The shot bounced off the rim, over the backboard and out of play with the Gaels trailing 81-78 with 6.9 seconds to play.

Dellavedova, the reigning West Coast Conference player of the year, finished 4-for-15 from the floor.

"No excuses," Saint Mary's coach Randy Bennett said. "He's (Dellavedova) got to play better than that."

dangerous attitude to have imo. you dont improve or think you need to work to improve if youre happy with just eaking out a win after giving up a 20 pt lead against a team that probably should have been beat by 15-20.

Meehan's Day-After Post (http://www.spokesman.com/blogs/sportslink/2013/jan/11/day-after-saint-marys/):
—Gonzaga has several concerns after this one. No. 1, the Zags have simply been outworked, outhustled and outplayed for long stretches in WCC play by Pepperdine (first half) and Saint Mary’s (second half). The Zags have been getting beat on most 50-50 balls. It reinforces Few’s often-stated message that this isn’t his most talented team. It may be his best team – time will tell – but it’s not one that can coast in terms of effort.

That goes hand-in-hand with concern No. 2: Rebounding. The Zags have been outboarded in three straight games (Pepperdine, Santa Clara and Saint Mary’s). Gonzaga played solid defense on numerous possessions in those three games, but was unable to finish it off with a defensive rebound. Opponents have made them pay. Few things are more frustrating than guarding well for 30 seconds, then having to try to do it again after surrendering an offensive rebound.

Saint Mary’s won the boards, 39-27. It was 21-9 in the second half, 10-2 on the offensive glass. The last time Gonzaga was outrebounded by more than 12 was by Memphis (by 14) in the 2008-09 season. Three times since GU has been outrebounded by 12.

Asked about SMC’s offensive rebounding, Few said part of the problem was, “We were doing some things where the guards have to rotate down and block out 7-foot guys.” Few added, “But I think they had two rebounds on missed free throws, and we’d been darned good at that. And we had two or three they just took from us.”
