Baseball Coach Mark Machtolf gave a preview on his team Tuesday at the Gonzaga Lunch Bunch. He feels he has the ptiching and hitting to contend for the WCC this year.

He was asked about the theoretical possibility of GU moving to a national conference instead of the WCC. He said it would be great for basketball but lousy for baseball. Travel would be awful, weather would be awful in many east/midwest locations, and the former Big East schools have lower-level, low-RPI baseball programs. It would be hard to recruit in that climate.

In contrast, the WCC provides good climate, high-RPI teams and easy travel. Mac says the ultimate goal is to get to the College World Series, and the possibility of getting an at-large NCAA berth is good in the WCC but unlikely in a Big East scenario.

But he realizes who the Big Dog is in GU sports.

Big East baseball is abysmal. C7 baseball would be even worse.

The only good news might be that GU could come close to dominating it the same was Zags basketball dominated the WCC for years.
