San Francisco Chronicle (http://www.sfgate.com/collegesports/article/Gonzaga-outlasts-Santa-Clara-81-74-4170501.php):

"Really the difference, first obviously, was Olynyk," Santa Clara coach Kerry Keating said. "You can't let a guy come in and have a career night in your own gym."

Olynyk, whose previous career high was 22 points, was 12-for-15 from the field and added 10 rebounds.

Olynyk has had his best games in tough environments. He scored 22 points in a road win over Washington State and 21 in a road victory over Oklahoma State.

"I couldn't tell you why," Olynyk said, "but crowds don't bother me. I feed off the energy."

Mercury News (http://www.mercurynews.com/scu-broncos/ci_22319286/gonzaga-defeats-santa-clara):

Olynyk announced his presence early when he grabbed the opening tipoff and raced to the bucket for an uncontested dunk. He had 17 first-half points on 7-of-8 shooting.

"The crowd was great," Keating said. "I wish it was like that all the time. I've been trying to tell people for six years that we're always playing in here, so I don't understand why we can't have that type of support."

Keep the Benjamins flowing, coach.

Early AP (http://scores.espn.go.com/ncb/recap?gameId=330052541):

"It was a great road trip. Probably the best I've ever been on in 25 years," said Few, whose team departed Dec. 30 with its first stop a 69-68 win at then-No. 22 Oklahoma State on New Year's Eve. "It started in Stillwater in front of 13,500 and into here tonight. That was an inspired, spirited, really much-improved Santa Clara team. We withstood all their shots and got it done. ... We're in the most difficult stretch I've ever been a part of."

S-R:

“That was a great road trip, probably the best I’ve been on in 25 years,” Bulldogs coach Mark Few said. “That was a very inspired, spirited and much improved Santa Clara team. We withstood all their shots and got it done.”

Some of those shots came from an overflow crowd, where the student section kept serenading Olynyk with chants of, “Get a Haircut.” Olynyk kept tuning up Santa Clara’s defense, knocking down 12 of 15 shots and 8 of 9 free throws to eclipse his career-best 22 points against Washington State a month ago.

“Best I’ve ever seen him play,” forward Elias Harris said. “He was hitting every shot, he drove to the hoop, rebounding. He did everything you can do in a basketball game.”

Gonzaga's Kelly Olynyk had 33 points and made big play after big play against Santa Clara. We're talking about a guy who had to sit three games for violating school rules to start the year. He abnormally took a redshirt season last year to basically improve his game/not waste a year when he knew/thought playing time would be low. And now it's paying off. The Olynyk Clinic is very much in session.

I'm disappointed to see that Judge Harry did not author this article.

Posted this in the GUnit thread also (from NBCsports CollegeBasketballTalk):

Kelly Olynyk, the nation’s most improved player (http://collegebasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/01/06/kelly-olynyk-the-nations-most-improved-player/)

Tidbits:

Olynyk shrugged his shoulders when asked about having 1-on-1 matchups most of the game.
“You’d have to ask them,” he said. “They doubled me once and when I started to penetrate I saw guys come over, but then it was easy to drop (the ball) off to Sam (Dower). It’s hard to double if you’re accustomed to it. It leaves things wide open if you’re not good at it.”

The free-throw line, a sore spot earlier this season, was good to the Zags on this road trip. GU was 15 of 18 (83 percent) against Oklahoma State, 25 of 29 (86 percent) against Pepperdine and 27 of 30 (90 percent) versus Santa Clara.
“Coach (Few) has been on us,” Pangos said. “It’s two things: Time in the gym and also mental toughness. Guys have been committed, just focusing and knocking them down. That can be the difference in a game.”

GU followed up its season-low 43.4% FG shooting against Pepperdine with a Division I, season-high tying 55.3% against SCU. The Zags shot 64% against NAIA LCSC and 55.3% against South Dakota.

Lots more at the link.
