View Full Version : Robert Sacre and the Lakers

The Lakers came from behind to beat Washington earlier tonight, 102-96 (http://scores.espn.go.com/nba/boxscore?gameId=400278046). Rob played 16 minutes, with 2-2 shooting, 4 rebounds, and a block.

Rob celebrates his first basket in the game.

From the ESPN game story (http://espn.go.com/blog/los-angeles/lakers):

Sacre took advantage of an opportunity

Against New York, Robert Sacre got tossed into the mix after foul trouble plagued both Howard and Jordan Hill. Mike DíAntoni had no choice but to roll with the rookie. Generally speaking, thatís how second-round rookies get on the floor: The coachís hands are tied, so the dice are reluctantly rolled. Given how Hill missed Friday night's contest with back spasms, it stood to reason Sacre would get some more run. After Howard picked up a third foul in the first half, the rookie ended up playing nearly 11 minutes before halftime. He performed well. Four first-half rebounds were snagged -- one on the offensive glass, which he converted into an authoritative dunk -- and a Wizards shot was returned to sender. Another bucket came on a pretty step-back jumper along the baseline.

Sacreís second-half run didnít add anything to his stat column, but he maintained his energy and, more important, didnít make many mistakes. Once Hillís back heals, Iím guessing Sacre will resume his role as arguably the leagueís most popular sideline entertainer, what with his dancing and reveling after big plays. But he did a nice job reassuring his coach and teammates that if times get lean, he can take the floor without the game going off the rails. For that matter, Devin Ebanks also presented himself well in an unexpected start with Hill on the shelf.

It's been Darius Morris, Jodie Meeks & Robert Sacre that have helped bring LAL back after falling down by 9. Just playing hard.

Found a fun story on ESPN (http://espn.go.com/blog/los-angeles/lakers/post/_/id/34896/sacre-and-duhon-lakers-family-affair) about Rob and Chris Duhan discovering they were third cousins!
"[Duhon's] momma and my dad went to the same high school in Ville Platte, La., so that's where we're all from," Sacre said. "That's how the lineage is."

The rookie Sacre has leaned on Duhon, a nine-year veteran, for advice as the year has gone on.

"He's been great," Sacre said. "He's been an awesome teammate and cousin. He's definitely helped me out with the plays and just the adjustment of being in the NBA."

Said Duhon: "Just telling him what it is going to take for him to stay in the league. Things he needs to do, things he needs to learn about the NBA game, which is completely different from the college game. Just giving him the nuances so he can enjoy a long career."

Lakers are playing the Sixers right now, so I'm hoping Rob gets minutes again. I'm watching on Comcast #444 in Spokane, which is normally PPV, but I'm getting it free today.

Go Lakers!

So. It is Jan 1, and as far as I can find Mr Sacre is still on the Lakers roster. Does that not mean that his contract is for the year?

Just looked back through the old articles, and the date is Jan 20. Can't really want Howard to get hurt, but Stan Van Gundy believes his back is still an issue. Hopefully Mr Sacre stays, as insurance, to get his feet wet, to be a challenger in practice, to get a few minutes and finally to flourish!

The Zags are attending the Lakers game tonight, so fingers crossed they'll see Big Rob on the floor!

Knew the Lakers were playing, didn't know the Team would be there. Hope they blow out the Knicks, despite Howards early 5 fouls, and Rob gets 15 min+ and lights up the scoresheet!

Just a fantasy but if I'm going to dream, dream BIG!

Fingers crossed for hood news for Big Rob on Monday:

Sacre might have something more personal to celebrate soon. His $474,000 salary becomes guaranteed if he is still with the Lakers on Jan. 10. If the team intended to cut Sacre, it would need to request waivers on him by 2 p.m. PST Monday. From a story about him in the LA Times (http://www.latimes.com/sports/basketball/nba/lakers/la-sp-lakers-fyi-20130102,0,4505969.story?track=rss):

Lakers sideshow

Robert Sacre has found a way onto sports highlight shows without getting off the bench.

Or, more precisely, because he's on the bench.

The Lakers reserve center has been featured in the background of several nice plays by his teammates, the 7-foot rookie bounding off the bench to flick his wrist after a three-pointer or wildly flail his arms in karate-chop fashion after a dunk.

He is often the highlight of the highlight.

"He's always animated," Howard said.

Sacre's cheerleading routine has been shown on NBA TV and generated a YouTube tribute (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=NxVuySQT-eY) that has been viewed more than 163,000 times. It's an unlikely rise to cult hero status for someone who was the final pick of the 2012 draft and has played mostly in blowouts, averaging 0.5 points in 13 games.

"Right from Game 1, I think people started being like, 'What are you doing?' " Sacre said. "I really was just like, 'I'm just having fun.'"

Where did Sacre get his moves?

"I learned a little bit from Yosemite Sam," he said, referring to the cartoon outlaw from "Looney Tunes." "He has those guns shooting up in the air, but other than that, really I just freestyle and go with it and get super excited when they make a great play."
