JP still going strong...now in his fifth season with Le Mans Sarthe Basket. Unfortunately his team lost a do-or-die match in their Eurocup regular-season finale today, falling short to VEF Riga 69-67. JP finished with 16 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals. He put up some excellent numbers in the 6 Eurocup regular season games, averaging 17.2 points and 4.7 rebounds, while making 44 of 74 field goals (59.5%) and 15 of 20 free throws.

Their Eurocup season now over, Le Mans will work on winning a French league title. Currently they are tied atop the French Pro A standings with a 7-3 record. They have six players averaging between 9.2 and 10.4 points per game, with JP having the 10.4. He also leads them in rebounding at 5.5.

JP and Steven are scheduled to face each other when Le Mans visits Roanne in early February.

Yesterday Le Mans overcame a 23-point 2nd half deficit to beat ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne 64-60. JP had 11 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals & 1 block.

At the halfway point of the Pro A regular season, Le Mans is one of four teams tied atop the standings at 10-5. JP still leads the team in scoring (10.9) and rebounding (5.5).

Fantastic finish yesterday. JP's team (in the dark uni's) trails by 1 point with 2.9 seconds left, and Coleman Collins - one of Steven's teammates - at the FT line, attempting to miss on purpose...

Yep, that's the same El-Amin from the old UConn days.

JP had fouled out, so he wasn't on the floor at the end. Steven, otoh, might still be under the basket, head down, hands on knees...

JP: 9 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 turnover in 28 minutes
Steven: 12 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, 4 turnovers in 22 minutes

They'll get to face each other again on the 15th in the Leaders Cup.

Thanks, Stretch! I followed the statchecker live online, and Roanne was ahead comfortably when I was diverted and returned to see LeMans at the end. I was rooting for Steven, but no luck ...

I saw tweets that indicated he was leaving Le Mans, but didn't see where until this tweet:

Extremely happy with this new opportunity. Lucky to be part of such a traditional and historical club. @limogescsp

Click on the @limogescsp link--it's in French, but I gather he has been signed for 2 seasons.

Go, JP!

Here is a Google translation of a story from a French publication (http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=auto&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.limogescsp.com%2Fcsp-pro-actualites-details%2Fitems%2Fles-premiers-mots-de-joao-paulo.html) featuring an interview with our guy JP. Note that JP says in the article that he plans to visit Spokane in July!

The first words of Joao Paulo

Formalized since Monday, Limoges CSP is pleased to present its first summer signing, Brazilian Joao Paulo Batista pivot. After six full seasons in MSB inside "Seleção" gets a new challenge by joining the defending champion and finding the Euroleague he ever attended between 2007 and 2009. Because if JP has a strong knowledge and French basketball experience, its 84 European matches, including 21 in Euroleague will be a valuable asset to the club limougeaud next season.

Titled Baltic League with Vilnius in 2007, the pivot is the double the following season with Riga in the Latvian league and winning the Eurocup.

After announcing he was leaving the MSB there a few weeks ago, Joao Paulo Batista wants to complete his trophy collection with the missing one national title under his belt. On a family vacation, the neo limougeaud took time to meet us and discuss his future in his new team.

JP first question, where are you? On vacation?

Yes I'm on vacation in Recife Brazil. I enjoy spending time with my family.

Your arrival was formalized Monday. Why Limoges?

Well it's very simple. Limoges is the champion and when the best team in France makes you an offer, it's something special, rewarding. With the ambition to do as well as last year. Win. Bring trophies to the club. Individually I want to have a positive impact for the team. Do what I can do to help the team win.

Have you ever had the opportunity to interact with the staff?

I could talk with the President Forte. We have not been able to discuss my role more precisely, it will be done when we can discuss with the coach Jean-Marc.

Euroleague play was instrumental in the choice of joining the CSP?

Absolutely. This could also be my last opportunity to Euroleague player.

You join the defending champion. With a very difficult mission, to defend the trophy. After winning the Cup, Aces and Leaders Cup, as it is your goal?

No doubt about it! Earn twice the championship is something very hard. But it is our ambition and we will work hard for it. It is the only trophy I'm missing! It would be a dream to win.

When is your arrival in Limoges? What will be your program?

Everything went very quickly. I do not know precisely what date the club wish I arrived in Limoges. By then my program is simple. I will be in Brazil, to work my game and spend time with my family. In July I go to Spokane, Washington. There I will go to my college at Gonzaga, for "workout" and also see friends.

.JPG Limoges it evoke for you as souvenirs of games?

Of all the games I've played in Limoges I remember the atmosphere and fans. It was incredible. There is nothing more motivating for sports such atmosphere, with noisy fans and behind their team. I can only congratulate all the fans of Limoges.

You are the first Brazilian club history. Did you contact with other expats Brazilian athletes?

Felipe Braga and I are the only two Brazilian basketball in France. I'm pretty sure of that. I am football on TV and I can see many of my compatriots who play in France! But I think they do not know me too (smile).

One last question ... JP on the World Cup football course. Who will be World Champion?

Ah this is a easy question (laughs)! Brazil champions!

JP thank you very much and see you soon!

Thank you

JP is one of my all time favorite Zags. I loved his play but more so I met him at the Steam Plant one night after an important game the Zags had just won. He was so incredibly polite and forthcoming it was disarming. What a fine young man he was then and likely still is. He was interested in my wife and I and that was unusual as it was a casual encounter. He is right up there in terms of class for sure. GO JP!
Because of JP I studied Brazil in depth as history and geography are my thing. Did you know how big Brazil is? 3,000 miles wide and 3,000 miles top to bottom. HUGE geography.

Exclusive with JP Batista: Euroleague, moving on

Giancarlo Giampietro

After almost 33 years, the pivot John Paul Batista just move on. It seems that always goes around the edges, but building a single career for Brazilian standards. He just opened its ninth consecutive season in Europe, now defending Limoges, French champion, entitled to more participation in the Euroleague .

"Look, it's hard to answer because it is a bit out of my control. Anyone who knows me knows where I came from and the way I had to go through to get where I am ', said the VinteUm in generous email interview.

The Pernambuco is already more than accustomed to battle and be somewhat relieved. Happens early, coming from a region that is still far removed from the main centers of attracting talent in the country. Even got to play in Sao Paulo, for Paulistano and São José do Rio Preto, but nothing that promised much. Decided then to get the bags and embark in search of a literal " American Dream ".

Is it: you get to a city within the United States, without knowing exactly what awaits you, without speaking fluent English - and "nothing in the pocket ', remember - only committed to making things happen. How about a junior college in Western Nebraska? Or, perhaps, the Barton County Community College? Was the route that the pivot took even get up on the radar of top teams of the NCAA. Among a handful of proposals, chose Gonzaga, which would have the company of a certain Adam Morrison - point guard Jeremy Pargo beyond, the fans of Flamengo knew so well this month and who recently reunited:

With his shaggy hair, thin mustache and meiões extended, Morrison had turned a whooping playing for the Bulldogs, with regular appearances on ESPN, Sports Illustrated, New York Times and the like. In 2006, the team was under the national spotlight, but not to say that JP was dominating the news. Anyway, it was one of the most important pieces of the team and at least gained the attention of those who added value . "He's our unsung hero ', said at the time, coach Mark Few on the athlete averages 19.3 points and 9.4 rebounds. "He follows delivering, delivering and delivering every night for us. '

Gonzaga ended up falling early in that tournament, losing in the third round for a UCLA eventual five NBA players (Arron Afflalo, Jordan Farmar, Luc Richard Mbah a Moute, Darren Collison and Ryan Hollins). With staff in his class, is always in contact. "Every holiday I go there to train 'he says. This year, found Morrison, who is finishing his studies and studying the possibility of turning technician.

Draft in 2006, John Paul had beaten. Played a league of summer by the Minnesota Timberwolves, but was to professionalize even just in Europe by Lietuvos Rytas, Lithuania. Is in Europe since then, quite a solid career - and unusually for Brazilians, but few deem ball. Are there eight years.

As far as I can tell from the tweets and French, Batista's jersey has been retired at Le Mans.

Google his tweets--I can't access them on this device ( no letter between 0 and Q)

Thanks for the heads up, ZaGranny! Very cool that LeMans would do that for JP! Limoges Joao Paulo Batista tribute to

For his return to Le Mans where he has largely won with Limoges Saturday (59-74), the Brazilian Joao Paulo Batista pivot received an emotional welcome with the withdrawal of his jersey.

He promised he would not cry. But Joao Paulo Batista could not hold back tears on Saturday afternoon when, prior to the start of the match between Le Mans and Limoges ( 59-74 ), the five miles of Antares spectators stood up, chanting his name for minutes. In the middle, Christophe Le Bouille, president of MSB then invited his former captain to return to attend the withdrawal of his jersey No. 13 in the room spans.

"It's an incredible feeling to be celebrated as"
The Brazilian pivot of thirty-three, who left the Sarthe after six seasons (2008-2014) to join in Limousin, France champion, then dried his eyes, wearing the green jersey of the CSP and cry his former fans by scoring his best game of the season with 19 points (7/12 on penalties) and 3 rebounds. And committing to two minutes from time, a fifth foul synonymous with exclusion, Batista offered an exit to the cheers. "My heart was beating so fast, then blew the top scorer in the history of Sarthe club (3365 Points in 298 official matches), whose two daughters were born in Le Mans. I had never experienced this. It's an incredible feeling to be celebrated as well. I would never have imagined such a reception. I will never forget this tribute. "
