Baseball Recruiting Class Named In Top 35

SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University baseball was named for having one of the top 35 recruiting classes in the nation and the best in the West Coast Conference for 2013 announced Baseball America Friday.

"We are very pleased to have our most recent recruiting class ranked amongst the nations best and top in the WCC," head coach Mark Machtolf said. "My assistants Danny Evans and Steve Bennett have spent countless hours on the road, away from their families to accomplish and secure one of the best classes to arrive on the campus."

Baseball America looked at more than 300 Division I college baseball programs and compiled the top 25 classes and the 10 next best. Gonzaga was named in the 10 next best.

"We feel strongly that once we get a recruit to visit campus we have a great chance to receive a commitment from that student-athlete," Machtolf said. "Gonzaga is such a special and genuine community insulated with many great people from President Thayne McCulloh, Athletic Director Mike Roth and Senior Associate AD Chris Standiford, our unbelievable academic support staff from Mike Roden and to our current players who all help make our program very attractive to the best baseball players in country."

The Bulldog recruiting class is highlighted by right-handed pitchers Taylor Jones from Kentwood High in Covington, Wash., and Andrew Sopko from Loyola Sacred Heart High in Missoula, Mont.

Jones is a 6-7 former basketball player who has also been named the top right-handed pitcher and third best prospect in Washington by Baseball Northwest. He was also named a top 100 prospect by Baseball America.

Sopko was rated as the top right-handed pitcher and overall prospect in the states of Idaho, Montana and Wyoming by Baseball Northwest. His high school did not sponsor baseball so he played with the Missoula Mavericks prior to coming to Gonzaga.

Also included on Baseball America's analysis of Gonzaga's recruiting class was catcher Jimmy Sinatro from Skyline High in Sammamish Wash., shortstop Cabe Reiten from Academy Northwest in Olympia, Wash., and right-handed pitcher Michael Rucker from Auburn Riverside in Auburn, Wash.
