Old Spice Classic -- "Play-In" Game?

We're playing WVU on Monday, November 12th (week from this upcoming Monday) in Spokane. The Zags' official schedule calls it a "play-in" game for the Old Spice Classic. Huh?

Play-in? What does that mean, play-in? Is the game part of the Old Spice tourney (but it's played away from the main venue)? Win or lose, we still go to Lake Buena Vista ten days later, right? (Sorry, if this's been discussed elsewhere in another thread.)

In regular season scheduling for D-I basketball, teams may schedule either a maximum of 29 games or a maximum of 27 games and a multi-team event (which may include up to 4 games per team, played over no more than a 14 day span). By scheduling the WVU game as "part" of the OSC, the game doesn't count against GU's maximum of 27 games outside of that multi-team tourney, freeing up space for another game on the schedule.

GU vs. WVU in Spokane is a non-bracketed game, meaning it has no effect on the happenings in Florida the following week. Both teams go and will play opening round games against opponents that have already been determined (Clemson for GU, Marist for WVU) , no matter the result of the game on the 12th.

I didn't realize that was a 'play-in' game, but even if that's not a typo, 90% of 'play-in' games these days are a joke, ever since Indiana fell to Butler a few years back and Gardner-Webb (IIRC) ended up in the NIT over... Kentucky? Ever since those upsets, the 'play-in' games in almost every major preseason tourney really have nothing to do with playing into anything. They're basically 'warm-up' games by another name.

Late Games

I have been a West Coast resident my entire life but I have been spending more time on the East Coast in the past year or two and I can see why East Coast writers largely ignore GU and other West Coast teams unless they are playing a major game against a national rival. Games starting at 11 or midnight in Philly or NY require a special dedication on the part of the East Coast writers, particularly where they have plenty of ACC or Big East games to cover during "regular hours". GU games usually miss the newspaper deadlines and the Sportscenter coverage on the East and Central time zones.

I hope GU makes a big splash at the Old Spice, because we are not going to have a lot of other easy East Coast coverage games. It would be nice to know that the entire NCAA Tournament Committee is familiar with GU's talent, not just those on the West Coast.

The whole need to redefine games in order to follow overly restrictive NCAA rules is stupid. The NCAA is going way too far. Fans, staff and school administrations need to speak up. If speaking up gets a fine, then we need to go to the supreme court to make speaking up against officials and the NCAA legal and 100% within our rights. How can the NCAA impose fines against players and staff speaking up against referee and NCAA corruption? Or possible corruption.

Easy! Mods can delete a post for it being critical of them.

I agree about the NCAA though, but see it going the way of the BCS schools. If they threaten to form their own entity unless things are weighted MORE in their favor, the NCAA will bend over backwards to appease the cash cow.
I would hope the issue of players and coaches being allowed to speak up, within reason, is dealt with. If a coach criticizes an official, in any sport, at any level, and tape shows the complaint to be correct and the offense egregious, the penalty should fall on the shoulders of the offending party, not the one calling attention to the problem. Just don't see it happening. There are too many officials that would rather quit, en masse, than allow THEIR decisions to be called into account. We saw the complaints of the replacement refs in the NFL, then the NFL just caved (after the Seahawks call...and even though they said it was the correct call.)

It's really late for many Zag fans stuck on the East Coast too.

The one perk is the freed up weekend (including other sports especially NFL). With two small ones, it is nice to know they are tucked away and in bed when tip-off comes around. During the week, most games I just record and resist the temptation to check (easier said than done).
