Per ESPN (http://espn.go.com/blog/boston/celtics/post/_/id/4698487/downs-lands-with-claws):
Downs lands with Claws

Celtics camp cut Micah Downs was among eight players invited to attend training camp with the Maine Red Claws of the D-League. Downs is one of two affiliated players -- the other being Harvard 7-footer Brian Cusworth -- after attending camp with Boston.
....
Micah Downs: Downs (6-8, 200, Gonzaga) joins the Red Claws as an Affiliate Player, having attended the Boston Celtics 2012 training camp. A transfer from Kansas, Downs spent three seasons with Gonzaga, appearing in 33 games as a senior and averaging 7.9 ppg. Described in scouting reports as “a fantastic leaper” who can “score at will”, Downs, 26, spent the last three seasons overseas with teams in Croatia, Belgium and Spain.

And there was much rejoicing from the Maine chapter of the Gonzaga alumni association. (yaaaaay....). Assuming that we can persuade Micah to join us, that will bring our chapter's membership to two.

"Affiliate Player" - I think that means he's on the cusp, right?

"Affiliate Player" - I think that means he's on the cusp, right?

It means that the Celtics are keeping his contract rights so they can "call him up" to the big leagues if they need him. Most of the D-League players are not so affiliated. They are contracted only with the D-League team, not the parent franchise.

That is good for Micah Downs. If the Celtics have injuries at the wing spot over the season, he's only a two-hour drive from Boston. They usually have uniforms and lockers reserved for their Red Claws players, because the Celtics have been known to call a player in the afternoon and expect him to suit up for an evening game.

In local radio interviews with past Red Claws players, those players have always raved about how much effort the Celtics put into their development. They have said that the veterans on the Celtics have amazing work habits and that they expect the rookies and developmental players to develop the same habits. If they younger players can show that same personal discipline, they have a chance to play. If they don't, the team will find someone else who has the discipline to be part of that franchise. Even if Micah never plays much for the Celtics, this should be an excellent opportunity for him to improve as a player.

Good for Micah.. He's looking good! Always liked him as a Zag and excited for his future. If he keeps having lines like that last one posted we might be seeing Rondo throwing some dimes his way pretty soon.

Micah is doing great things for the Red Claws. This writer in a Ridiculous Upside (http://www.ridiculousupside.com/2012/12/10/3748266/will-micah-downs-follow-greg-stiemsmas-path-to-the-nba) piece sees the NBA in his future.
Will Micah Downs Follow Greg Stiemsma's Path to the NBA?

icah Downs is having a break out season in the NBADL that could land him a shot in the NBA His stat-sheet stuffer contributions remind many of the path that Greg Stiemsma used in the D-League to earn a spot on the Celtics roster last year. Downs is doing his best to prove he deserves an opportunity for similar contributions.

His athleticism makes him capable of driving to the basket, shooting from mid-range, and also hitting the three-point shot.

As a member of the Red Claws, he is averaging 19.9 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 3.4 assists. With his skills and scoring ability, Downs can easily fit in the 2 or 3 spot. Perhaps his greatest asset is his hustle. Often beating the defense down the floor, Downs creates opportunities for easy transition buckets.

While Downs does have a nice shot, his style of play is based on aggressively attacking the rim. He can slash to the basket and dunk or pull up for a floater. This typically gives him room on the perimeter and opens up easy mid-range baskets. Ultimately, he selects his shots well and takes advantage of what the defense is offering.

There's a lot of upside with Downs. He's a hard worker who never takes a play off. He rebounds, plays solid defense, and distributes well too. All of these qualities are reminiscent of the kind of play that got Stiemsma to the NBA. Expect Downs to keep trying to follow in his footsteps. Here's Micah driving on Canton's Kevin Jones:

Micah looked really, really good in person when I watched him against Sacre's team. My oldest son was a huge Sacre fan before that game and is now a big Micah Downs fans. I was planning to take my kids to see another Red Claws game after the New Year, but he might not be around that long. I'd better catch him before he's gone.

Downs can jump. He can run. He can board. He can shoot a bit, too. The only real issue for somebody who's near the league leaders in scoring (19.9 ppg) with a line of 7.3 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.4 blocks is that Downs plays like one of those guys that spins in foosball. He'll score a bunch, but control ain't his forte. To his credit, though, he'll drive you clinically crazy.

Does anybody know if an undrafted, but "affiliated" player, like Micah Downs, is limited to playing only for the NBA team that owns his rights? The Celtics have several really good wings on their roster and a couple of good, athletic wings with size playing for the Red Claws. He is playing well enough to get called up to the NBA, but the Celtics might not have a place for him. Can he play for another team that needs him more?

And of course the Celtics won't give up the rights to Micah because if they did, he'd get called up by someone else and would end up torching them...;)

Micah Downs

Downs can play. The 6-8 forward out of Gonzaga -- and Celtics training camp invitee -- has made himself into a basically ever-present force on the court for Maine, affecting the game on both sides of the floor all year long. While Fab Melo's come along, Downs has provided a constant force on the boards and in the lane for Maine, including a 13-rebound night against the BayHawks and their two-center crew (Sims, Keith Benson) on Dec. 16.

Micah moves to #10 on the D-League Prospect Watch (http://www.nba.com/dleague/news/prospect_watch_201213_week_six.html) for week Six.
Versatility

To NBA scouts, 'Versatile' often means 'tweener,' when it comes to NBA D-League players. Undersized forwards. Guards with shaky jumpers. Centers with the dimensions of shower rods. However, a few players have put together complete packages good enough to ship to The Association as they are.
....

Micah Downs, F, Maine Red Claws: Active, tall and efficient (and 6-foot-8), Downs has a distribution game that's alien to most of his peers in the NBA D-League (3.5 assists a game), not to mention quick hands good for 1.7 steals a night. The turnover totals (3.4) stand a little too tall, but Downs could get a shot even before 10-days start.
The Red Claws play at Idaho tonight at 6:00 PM. The game can be watched live online here (http://www.nba.com/dleague/games/youtube.html).

Doc Rivers is talking about a major overhaul of the Celtics roster following a string of lackluster performances from his team.

http://espn.go.com/blog/boston/celtics/post/_/id/4701436/rivers-throws-down-gauntlet-on-cs

And now, essentially one month away from the Feb. 21 trade deadline, the Celtics are forced to once again consider if they have the right pieces to make another postseason run.

Rivers was quick to clarify on Sunday that he wasn't sure "if we need changes." But his rant essentially put it on the players: Start playing a better brand of basketball, or the decision-makers in Boston will have no other choice but to break up the band.

If Boston cannot turn things around, there's no shortage of underperformers at the moment. Brandon Bass, who inked a three-year, $19.4 million extension this offseaosn, hasn't been anywhere near as effective as he was last season -- at either end of the floor. Bass picked up two fouls in the first three minutes on Sunday and played a mere 10:20 overall. Missing all three shots he took while finishing with 0 points and 2 rebounds, he was a minus-14 in plus/minus. Boston used its one big offseason chip -- the mid-level exception -- to ink Jason Terry to a three-year, $15.7 million deal this summer and he's struggled to find his shot and settle in as leader of the second unit.

You can't help but wonder how far Rivers and Ainge would be willing to go to overhaul this team if it can't get itself right. With players struggling, Boston doesn't exactly have a lot of desirable assets to bring back superstar-caliber talent, unless the Celtics are willing to move core players.

I have to wonder if dumping a few of these prima donnas would open up a roster spot for a blue collar hustle guy, like Micah Downs.
