View Full Version : Sacre and the Lakers

According to the Los Angeles Times' Mike Bresnahan, it seems like the Lakers are considering keeping just one of their players with non-guaranteed contracts—and that player is center Robert Sacre.

Via the Los Angeles Times:

The race for the end of the bench appears to be a one-man show.

The Lakers are leaning toward keeping 14 players on their roster, one below the NBA maximum, meaning Robert Sacre might be the only one to stay among three players with nonguaranteed contracts.

While that will undoubtedly come as a massive disappointment to Goudelock and Johnson-Odom, ridding themselves of both guys is a shrewd move for a Lakers team that could need roster flexibility down the road.

Sacre would be a wonderful "keep" for the Lakers. Hard working, smart, quick and strong. I am holding my breath that nothing goes wrong and that Big Rob is on the bench at the first regular season game, and that he stays there through the entire season. In an 82 game season teams like the Lakers need to experiment with a lot of players to adjust for injuries and rest for their superstars. Rob is the perfect answer.

Go Rob Sacre!

Looking forward to seeing Big Rob against Ronny tonight on NBA TV at 7:30, as the Lakers meet the Clippers.

Loved this story about Rob (http://sulia.com/channel/la-lakers/f/7128c6b1-98ee-4a1c-a172-5cb691564db9/?source=twitter) posted today:
So, Robert Sacre has two black eyes after getting hit in the face at practice this week. Here's the story ...
I had to ask Mike Brown how his favorite Gonzaga rookie got those shiners. Take it away, Mike:

"He got a good one in practice the other day. But, you know what? He got hit and he just kept playing. He just kept playing. He didn’t say a single word, then it started gushing with blood. He went and saw the trainer and they plugged his nose and they sutured his nose and he went back out there and kept playing the rest of practice. He didn’t miss a beat. And you know, you want to earn respect as a big, tough, strong guy – especially with this team or in this league – and that’s how you do it.

"After he got hit, he went back to continuing to play the same defense on Dwight (Howard). Nose in there and all.

"He thinks he’s pretty, that’s the only thing about it. He does think he’s pretty and well, that crooked nose is going to dispute that a little bit." The ladies on guboards have to agree with Big Rob: He is pretty!

He exemplifies, hard work, character, good looks and the Los Angeles spirit of the melting ### of humanity.

Not to mention his huge upside. Sacre does all the little things and his defense will improve. But he had a 9 rebound game and his averages are pretty decent for a rookie.

He is a no-brainer IMO. Apparently Mitch Kupchak and Mark Few have something in common, a recruiting formula that emphasizes work ethic and character. Both are two variables that will make or break any professional in any industry anywhere.

My question is did he get a Lakers tattoo before or after he made the team? Lebron can have Chosen 1 since he was chosen #1 in the draft, but Sacre can put "Chosen" because at least he was drafted!

A well written article indeed! I only have one quibble pertaining to an inaccurate statement about the Zags bursting onto the national scene. Specifically:

"Though they are now known as a top twenty-five program, the Zags somehow keep the underdog appeal that they first had when they burst upon the national scene with a Sweet Sixteen run, in 1995".

Otherwise, a good write-up.

Just awesome.

Make no mistake. His hard work and team oriented attitude went a long way to helping him get this far.

He could get cut next week. He could be with the team for the entire season.
Such is the life of a player with a non guaranteed contract.

Howard has had injury issues at times. I think Rob "sticks".

If he sticks, this will go a long way toward keeping him in the league for longer than one season whether it is with the Lakers or not. Practicing and playing against the world's best will vastly improve his game and knowledge. That alone can create a long term career.

I'm very proud of what Robert has accomplished.

Anyone else remember how completely raw he was when he first arrived? Remember how we rationalized that he did not get the same level of club ball in Canada and it initially set him back? He had a lot of work to do and the young man got it done. One of GU's best examples of a player that returned every season noticeably better than he was the season prior.

Ponder how far he has come.

This is a recruiting boon as well. Now we just have get "Shemek" into the league.

Me too! Again! When Ronny was playing for the Lakers, one year during the playoffs we were on our way to Fairbanks. We stopped at a Rib place outside of Delta Junction. I saw that the playoffs were on, but it was commercial time. I asked the hostess if they were going keep the Lakers game on--she said "Yes! As long as you're a Lakers fan." I said, "Well, I'm really a Ronny Turiaf fan, but I root for the Lakers since he is playing for them!" So we had a nice evening, watching the game, eating ribs, and chatting with the hostess when she had a minute.

Robert Sacre inches closer to a roster spot

Sacre had his finest game of the preseason yet Wednesday, filling up the stat sheet with 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting, 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals in 35 minutes in the Lakers' 97-91 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers. And he did it all against the Clips' DeAndre Jordan, a center who signed a contract north of $40 million last season.

"He's learning, he's growing," Lakers coach Mike Brown said. "He did some good things and he didn't do some good things. So, it's both. But I'll tell you what, the experience that he's getting now is invaluable for him. He's got a big body, he's not afraid, he's going to play hard, he's pretty smart for a rookie. But he's playing with some guys who are helping him out too. They're helping him look pretty good out there and he's taking advantage of it."

....

"He has a chance to be in the NBA a really long time once he figures things out," said Steve Blake, a former second-round pick himself who is entering his 10th season.

He has already figured out the way to endear himself to a locker room. On a team with out-sized personalities like Howard, Bryant and Metta World Peace, Sacre is not some meek freshman looking to go unnoticed around the upperclassmen.

Before Wednesday's game he was joking how his "raccoon eyes" weren't hurting his game on the court, but more so hurting his game off of it.

"It just messes up my GQ look," Sacre said in an "Anchorman"-type deadpan. "That was the hard part. It just kind of humbled me a little more."
...
He has made himself a part of the team already and he's darn close to staying a part of it all season long.

"I feeling confident, no question," Sacre said. "I just need to keep focusing on what I need to do and just keep trying to get better."

Then the last pick was named. It was Sacre. The Lakers had selected him 60th overall with the final pick of the second round.

"That was the longest day of my life," Sacre said.

Sacre recounted that moment while sitting by his locker after the Lakers' 97-91 exhibition loss to the Clippers. He looked like a boxer with both of his eyes bruised and his nose cut, war wounds that he picked up from a hard foul at a recent practice.

Sacre said that his role with the team is to be a bruiser.

He was involved in a bit of a tussle with Ryan Hollins at the top of the fourth quarter when Hollins practically bear-hugged Sacre in an attempt to get the ball and there was no call on the play. Sacre responded by bodying up to Hollins, an act which landed him a technical.

"I'm a passionate guy and he was wrapping his arms around me so I didn't know what to do," Sacre said.

Overall, however, Sacre's play has impressed Brown.

"He's got a big body, he's not afraid, he's going to play hard, he's pretty smart for a rookie," Brown said.

From today's LA Times (http://www.latimes.com/sports/lakersnow/la-sp-ln-three-lakers-waiting-cut-20121027,0,3624031.story):

Robert Sacre: Taken 60th in the 2012 NBA Draft, Sacre played major preseason minutes at center while Dwight Howard worked his way back from surgery (herniated disk). Sacre shot 51.4% from the field, averaging 6.4 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.1 blocks a game. He needs to learn how to stay out of foul trouble but for a second-rounder, Sacre has shown more than enough to make the season-opening roster. Prognosis: Favorable.

Also, I went to the game on Thursday against my Sacramento Kings in SD. Although he appeared tired, Rob, unquestionably, looked like he belonged.

Oh, and I don't recall seeing this LA Times story (http://articles.latimes.com/2012/oct/25/sports/la-sp-1026-lakers-robert-sacre-20121026) previously.
Robert Sacre won't go down without a fight
The 7-foot Lakers center, the last pick in this year's NBA draft, is making the most of his playing time while Dwight Howard is out, hoping he can battle his way onto the roster.

Robert Sacre was so dejected during the NBA draft, he shot his agent a text.

"China sounds nice,'" Sacre wrote.

As time went by and his name still wasn't called, the 7-foot center from Gonzaga stopped paying attention to the television and started focusing on how he'd respond to the slew of condolences he surely was about to receive from friends and family.

When asked to evaluate his chances of making the team, Sacre perked up.

"I feel confident, no question," Sacre said. "I just have to keep focusing on what I need to do."

Robert Sacre’s Canadian Roots Make Impact In British Columbia

Upon graduation, Sacre went on to become a Gonzaga Bulldog, a school that has a penchant for recruiting elite Canadian talent. I kept up with his progress sporadically as I do with most British Columbia exports that now play college or professional ball in the United States. To his credit Sacre’s role expanded every year he was a Bulldog, culminating in his senior year where he averaged 11 points and six rebounds a game. Again, solid numbers, but as the draft drew nearer and Sacre was eligible to be drafted, nothing was guaranteed.

He was being likened to names such as Francisco Elson. Chad Ford, ESPN’s draft guru, ranked him as the draft’s 81st best player in a draft that only has 60 selections available. Scouts criticized that six rebounds a game for someone who’s 7-feet tall wouldn’t be enough at the NBA level.

Despite all that, British Columbia still tuned in to the 2012 NBA draft with realistic expectations that Sacre would be the first player since Steve Nash to be taken and earn a roster spot in the NBA. I joked with my friends before the second round of picks began that the Lakers should take Sacre with the last pick of the night just so we can say we’ve watched and played against a Los Angeles Laker. As luck would have it, Mitch Kupchak and the rest of management rolled the dice and actually selected Sacre with the 60th overall pick.

Sacre is one step away from making the Lakers’ opening night roster, having survived two rounds of cuts already. According to reports, Sacre and Darius Johnson-Odom are being considered for the final one or two roster spots.

(This was written before today's announcement--ZG.)

More often than not, my fandom for the Lakers is questioned due to geographical reasons. I constantly hear that I should have followed the Grizzlies to Memphis or I should cheer for the Blazers now because they’re the next closest team.

Jerry Seinfield once quipped that “loyalty to any one sports team is pretty hard to justify. The players are always changing. The team can move to another city. You’re actually rooting for the clothes when you get right down to it. You are standing and cheering and yelling for your clothes to beat the clothes from another city.”

While there may be a large blotch of truth ridden in Jerry’s satirical rant, if Sacre were to survive the final cut, it would truly cement my allegiance to the purple and gold.

I’d no longer be cheering for laundry, me (and the rest of British Columbia) will be cheering for the kid from North Vancouver who made the league (as a Laker nonetheless) despite the 99.9 percent odds that were stacked against him.

Bolded my favorite part. Lots more at the link.

Story from The Province

http://www.theprovince.com/sports/basketball/North+Vancouver+Robert+Sacré+makes+Lakers+opening+ roster/7470983/story.html

The seven-foot-tall Handsworth secondary grad was the last player picked in this year’s NBA draft, 60th overall, and entered Lakers training camp on a non-guaranteed contract that would allow the Lakers to cut him at any time. Sacré, however, made himself indispensable with his steady play during the preseason.

With superstar centre Dwight Howard working his way into game shape following a back injury, Sacré was thrown into the mix right from Day 1 for the Lakers, earning the start in the first preseason game. He didn’t disappoint. In eight total exhibition games Sacré earned six starts, averaging 6.4 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per contest while shooting 51.4 per cent from the field.

Monday was the final day for NBA teams to trim their rosters down to 15 players and Sacré’s name was one of the 15 listed on the Lakers website in the Season Preview released this afternoon. Player development coach Phil Handy included some glowing comments about Sacré in the 23-year-old rookie’s bio.

“He's made huge progress since the summer league,” said Handy. “He surprised me in the preseason with his toughness. He's had to practice against Dwight Howard every day, and he hasn't backed down. He got a look at some premier bigs in the league like LaMarcus Aldridge and DeMarcus Cousins and held up well.”

Sacré is not expected to play big minutes during the regular season and his contract will not be guaranteed until January but he has a chance to earn playing time backing up Howard in the middle, particularly when the Lakers are looking to use a big lineup.

If the Lakers do relive their past glory, Sacre will help another Canadian -- Victoria's Steve Nash -- earn a title that has eluded him throughout his long NBA career.

Sacre has expressed a desire to play for Canada's national team and Nash is now that squad's general manager. While passing the ball to Sacre, Nash can scout him literally first-hand.

But Sacre is putting his professional aspirations at the forefront.

"We talked about (the possibility of playing for the national team) this summer," said Sacre. "But really, that's not our focus. It's Lakers right now. That's what I'm thinking about, and I think that's what he's focusing on right now as well."

Sacre's girlfriend Vinessa and their one-year-old son Quinton are due to arrive in about a week from Spokane.

They will move into an apartment in Manhattan Beach, Calif., a significant change from the hotel Sacre has called his temporary home over the last six weeks.

Sacre also plans to mark the beginning of his pro career by getting another tattoo. He quickly dismissed the idea of getting a Lakers logo, at least until he has logged a fair amount of time with the team.

In the meantime, Sacre is in survival mode.

"I'm Survivorman -- for sure," he said with a big grin. "But I'm just having fun with what I'm doing right now."

As an aside, why does every Zag end up playing for the @#$& Lakers?!?! As a childhood Celtics fan and recent Phoenix transplant, it's killing me...

Agreed. I'm a childhood Celtics fan who moved to New England as an adult. I was really hoping to see Micah Downs in Celtic green.

I like Rob's quote of being "I'm Survivorman". I'm thinking somehow he could trademark that and make a tee-shirt with the S upside down LOL. I know I would buy one.

Last one drafted. Last one to make the team.

I AM SURVIVOR MAN

I AM SURVIVOR MAN

That upside-down "S" looks a lot like a right-side-up "S".

Just trying' to avoid the trademark infringement. The "S" is inside of a pentagon and one just needs to flip the pentagon.

Laker's centers 4-20 from the foul line. Too bad they didn't have an 80% seven footer on the roster. One of my favorite shows is becoming ESPN's NUMBERS NEVER LIE.

Considering there is already a Superman and a Survivorman, I think if you google the meaning of Sacre, it is appropriate to say:

L.A. just got "Sacred".
How does it feel to get Sacred.
Say your prayers, you're about to get "Sacred".

Saint Sacre in the City of Angles.

Most likley to coax him into giving Dwight free throw shooting tips!

I guess it will take time for them to jell, but once they do, they will roll.

Watched the game against Portland last night. Rob got in for the last minute of the first half when Howard picked up a foul. They didn't give him much of a chance, but he was a little late in sliding over to stop the last shot of the half that Lillard took(it went in). Howard was much better at free throws last night. He was 15-19. When he is playing like that, not much room for Rob to show what he can do.
