Beano Cook passes away at age 81 in his sleep. The "Pope of College Football," he had an encyclopedic knowledge of everybody and everything about college football going back to when the ball was round. He had a folksy style and was a pleasure to listen to.

Great tribute from Mike Decourcy at TSN:

But Cook’s encyclopedic knowledge of college football made him a fixture on ESPN’s broadcasts since 1985, and he shared his love of the game and his quick wit with those who watched.

ESPN’s publicity department presented some of his best lines in a Thursday release: From 1990: “Colleges spend more money on the promotion of the Heisman than the Pentagon spends on toilets.”

From 1988: “You only have to bat a thousand in two things—flying and heart transplants. Everything else you can go four for five.”

Also 1988: “I’d like to do the last scoreboard show and then go. I don’t want to die in the middle of the football season. I have to know who’s No. 1 in the last polls.”

And a prophetic one from 1992: “You’ll never have a 16-team playoff in college football. The most that could happen would be four teams in the next century. But after that, I’m dead, so who cares?”
