The Sporting News has the first preseason ranking (http://aol.sportingnews.com/ncaa-basketball/story/2012-10-02/college-basketball-preseason-rankings-top-25-2012-13-photos-decourcy/slide/21) I've seen, pegging the Zags at #21:

Ever since the Zags’ surprising run to the Elite Eight in 1999, the team has been full of good players. This might be the most talented of all Gonzaga clubs. Although the Zags have reached the NCAA Tournament 14 consecutive years, they’ve reached the Sweet 16 only once since 2006. Expect a deep NCAA Tournament run this March. This club has a star ready to shine in small forward Elias Harris, skill and toughness in the backcourt mates Kevin Pangos (pictured) and Gary Bell Jr. and plenty of frontline size and depth. — Barry Reeves

I wish the media would get GU's ranking right at the beginning of the season because GU tends to start underrated. Then good wins early that show how good we are, get too much hype, maybe drop a conference game, go back to underrated and then because GU finishes in conference we get underseated in the tourney.

How about some justice. Rank GU between 8-15 at the beginning of the season. That's how good they are. Keep it in that range the whole season with the ups and downs.

Then a 4-seed or better in the tourney.

I'm dreaming of course. I'm sure we'll be playing a the Big East throw-aways on the east coast as a 6-seed come March.

some big names listed there but imo you could basically switch us and Creighton. Or if were being a little biased, us and UCLA.

I feel like preseason polls are frequently about a program's reputation and recent track record than they are about the actual pecking order of the teams. That being said, I can't argue too much the SN's poll. FWIW, however, I personally expected us to be in the teens.

as of right now, GBJ & KO are being held out of individuals, scrimmages, & team practice(limited)...so, I'll keep expectations tempered until they return...

sounds minor, but until they're cleared to play, I;ill be holding my breath.

If there were two KEY players & "X-factors" in terms of versatility, star-power, blue-blooded talent, and even depth, they're the first players two that come to mind on this years' team.

Lindys has the Zags @ #20.

the way Lindys and Athlon talk about our final four potential, you would think they would have us higher than 20 and 25.

If they think we are a final four team, rank us in the top 10.

Reaching the final four is not about rankings, its about matchups. Plenty of 1-10s in rankings don't make it that deep.

Yeah, I know. :jk:I was being kinda sarcastic. I also know they speak of 15-20 other teams that also have a solid chance at a final four, so top 20 seems pretty good for us.

I also know rankings don't mean much but it would be fun if we could reach the #1 rank someday in our history. Maybe around March, 2013? Knock on wood!:bishop_smiley:

I think those rankings were pretty fair. They said they think Gonzaga will make a deep postseason run but they have them ranked #21. Pretty good list thanks for the link!
