Two Zags Named A Top Prospect By Baseball America

SPOKANE, Wash. - Two Gonzaga University baseball players have been named a top prospect by Baseball America.

Junior pitcher Marco Gonzales was listed as the No. 6 prospect on Team USA and sophomore pitcher Derek Callahan was listed as the No. 9 prospect from the West Coast League.

This summer, Gonzales pitched for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team and finished 3-0 in four appearances with a 2.82 ERA. The lefty from Fort Collins, Colo., was also named the Best Pitcher of the Honkbal Tournament in Haarlem, Netherlands, where Team USA took the bronze medal.

In his two years as a Bulldog, Gonzales has a career record of 19-4 and a 2.09 ERA in 27 appearances.

In a separate list by Perfect Game, Gonzales was listed as the No. 7 prospect on Team USA.

Back in the Pacific Northwest, Callahan turned heads with his performance for the Wenatchee AppleSox. The Edmonds, Wash., native finished 6-2 with a 2.59 ERA in 12 games. The lefty was nearly perfect in the playoffs by going 2-0 with a 0.68 ERA. Callahan helped the AppleSox win its fifth WCL title.

Callahan was also named All-WCL second team and was a WCL All-Star.

Both Gonzales and Callahan, along with the rest of the Gonzaga Bulldogs, have begun fall practice.

Don't forget Ames! A former Zag, He is now with L.A.'s Chattanooga Lookouts, ERA of 1.56, 18 saves, WHIP of 1.03! He's their primary closer at the AA level. Has made a steady progression from Rookie, short season, to Single A and now to AA. I expect to see him move up to AAA next year, and then who knows, maybe another Zag in the show!
