...in all sports except football, which will go independent. Desperately hoping some conference option will pop up. That will not happen, and Idaho will go back to Big Sky football and Div. 1-AA status before too long.

Thank you for sharing. I can't wait to tease my Idaho friends now.

The problem, as I recall, is that the Idaho Legislature demanded that both Idaho and Boise State retain parity to leave the Big Sky. It's too bad they didn't (couldn't) do the same when Boise made it big time!
It wouldn't hurt the Big Sky or Idaho to have them join forces again, in all sports. Better than Idaho hanging out in the wind, hoping to somehow be able to book 5 D1 home games in a sub-par d1 facility, a place hard to get to, and a small(ish) crowd...so no big gates receipt, no RPI ,or the football equivalent, and no real reason to schedule. At least in the Sky, they can compete against the best in their division! With Montana, Montana State and Eastern as perennial contenders, they could develop a good resume for post season play! It's what the Kibbie Dome was built for!

Idaho didn't exactly dominate the league back when they were in the Big Sky. Even then, the Griz were the top team in the league for football and men's and women's basketball. Idaho will be a middle of the pack team when they go back to the Big Sky.

I wouldn't say it dominated, but Idaho had the strongest football program in the Big Sky in the '80's and early '90's.

1981 - (6-1) - Idaho State^ - (also 6-1 - Boise State - both to eight-team I-AA playoffs) - ISU won I-AA national championship
1982 - (5-2) - Montana^ - (also 5-2 - Idaho, Montana State - UM @ UI in twelve-team I-AA playoffs, MSU excluded)
1983 - (6-1) - Nevada - I-AA semi-finalist
1984 - (6-1) - Montana State - won I-AA national championship
1985 - (6-1) - Idaho^ - (also 6-1 - Nevada - both to I-AA playoffs)
1986 - (7-0) - Nevada - I-AA semi-finalist
1987 - (7-1) - Idaho^ - (also 7-1 - Weber State - both to I-AA playoffs)
1988 - (7-1) - Idaho - I-AA semi-finalist
1989 - (8-0) - Idaho - (Montana - I-AA semi-finalist)
1990 - (7-1) - Nevada - I-AA runner-up, defeated Boise State in I-AA semi-finals in 3OT
1991 - (8-0) - Nevada
1992 - (6-1) - Idaho^ and Eastern Washington - (both to I-AA playoffs)
1993 - (7-0) - Montana - (Idaho - I-AA semi-finalist)
1994 - (6-1) - Boise State - I-AA runner-up - (Montana - I-AA semi-finalist)

The Vandals were certainly better than the mangy Griz during that time period. :)

Idaho moved to D-1 in 1996 and joined the Big West.

Never should've left the Big Sky. Vandals were better in the 80's in Big Sky than they have been lately.

Idaho will likely be back in the Big Sky for football too. I can't see them maintaining an FBS schedule with 5 home games. They would have 3 rivalries with EWU, UM and MSU.
