SELECTION SHOW: Following the conclusion of the regular-season Saturday, Gonzaga University will wait to see what its NCAA Baseball Championships fate is. The selection show will take place Monday at 9 a.m. PDT on ESPNU.

RECAPING LAST GAME: Gonzaga University is coming off a 1-0 10-inning loss to its in-state rival Washington State University Tuesday night. It was a pitching duel between Zach Abbruzza for the Zags and Joe Pistorese for Cougars. Both starters fired seven shutout innings before going to the bullpen in the eighth. Kenny Smith threw 2 2/3 innings of relief but suffered the loss after allowing a leadoff single, a sacrifice bunt and two-out RBI single in the 10th. Junior outfielder Billy Moon had two of the Bulldogs seven-hit evening while fellow outfielders, senior Royce Bolinger and junior Alex Bonczyk, both stretched their only base hits into a double. Despite losing the final game of the three-game season series, the Bulldogs had already won bragging rights for the year after winning the first two meetings in Spokane by the scores of 9-3 and 7-4.

ZAGS IN THE WCC STANDINGS: After sweeping the University of Portland last weekend, Gonzaga University improved its West Coast Conference record to 12-9 and is now in a three-way tie for third place in the league standings with Loyola Marymount University and the University of San Francisco. The University of San Diego and Pepperdine University entered the week tied for first with 14-7 records and will battle each other for the conference crown in Malibu, Calif. Also on the schedule this weekend, the Bulldogs will play the final weekend at seventh-place BYU (9-12), the Dons will cross the Bay Bridge to play seventh-place Saint Mary's College (7-14) and the Lions head to the Bay Area as well to face last-place Santa Clara University (4-17). The Pilots finished the WCC season with a 12-12 record and will finish the regular-season in non-conference play. The Bulldogs can finish as high as second place in the standings. But they will need help. The Bulldogs can secure second place by sweeping BYU and the Toreros sweep the Waves.

ZAGS IN RPI: Gonzaga University moved up six spots to No. 45 in the latest NCAA Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) standings Monday, which is the third highest ranking among West Coast Conference schools behind the University of San Diego (No. 28) and Pepperdine University (No. 33). RPI rates every baseball club on a weighted scale taking into factors such as a team's winning percentage, its opponents' winning percentage and the winning percentage of those opponents' opponents. Among the Bulldogs non-conference opponents this year, the University of Oregon (No. 5), University of Arkansas (No. 16) and Arizona State University (No. 18) sit in the top 35.

SCOUTING THE COUGARS: BYU recently took two of three West Coast Conference games over Santa Clara University last weekend in Provo, Utah. The Cougars won the first two games, 8-6 and 7-3, respectively, but the Broncos avoided the sweep with a 14-10 victory in the series finale. The Cougars have not been a team this season that swings for the fence. The team has combined a total of eight home runs throughout the year, with Kelton Caldwell and Jaycob Brugman both leading the team with two. Shortstop Austin Hall has been the hottest hitter on the team lately. He is currently on a seven-game hitting streak and has improved his batting average to .299 with a team-best 13 doubles, two triples and 18 RBI. The Cougars pitching staff compiles a 4.55 ERA with 186 walks and 307 strikeouts. Opponents are hitting .280 with 88 doubles, 12 triples and 20 homers.

LAST TIME VS. THE COUGARS: Although this weekend will be first meeting as West Coast Conference foes, Gonzaga University and BYU are quite familiar with each other as the two teams have met the last two seasons. Recently, the two teams split a short two-game series in Provo last year. Sophomore Marco Gonzales got the starting nod on the mound in game one, and although he fanned seven and allowed a hit and a walk in five shutout innings, former Zag catcher Cameron Edman was the highlight in the game after belting three home runs in his 5-for-5, six-RBI day to lead the Bulldogs to a 12-5 victory. He was a triple short from hitting for the cycle. In game two, the Bulldogs scored two runs in the ninth inning but the Cougars held on to beat the Bulldogs 4-3. Senior Andy Hunter surrendered a run on three hits and two walks in his four-inning start, but former Zag Mark Phillips allowed three runs across in the sixth to suffer the loss...

Halcomb Posts Four Hits But Zags Fall To BYU

PROVO, Utah - The Gonzaga University and BYU baseball teams put together a hitting explosion in their first contest as West Coast Conference opponents, combining a total of 25 hits, including four doubles, a triple and a solo home run. But a two-run eighth inning lifted the Cougars to a 6-4 win over the Bulldogs Thursday evening.

Steven Halcomb led the hitting effort for the Bulldogs, going 4-for-5 with two doubles. Alex Bonczyk added two hits and two stolen bases, while Maxx Garrett stretched his only hit on the evening into a double.

Bulldog starter Tyler Olson (5-4) struck out eight batters but allowed all six runs on 14 hits and a walk. His counterpart, Desmond Poulson, received a no-decision despite allowed three earned runs on nine hits and a walk. Mason Marshall (2-1) earned the win after surrendering two hits in two shutout innings of relief.

In the first inning, Halcomb hit a one-out double and scored on Royce Bolinger's RBI single to right. Bolinger advanced to second on the play on a fielding error by right fielder Kelton Caldwell and Andy Hunter brought the run across with a RBI single to center. BYU answered back in its half of the frame when Wes Guenther hit a one-out double, Caldwell walked and back-to-back two-out singles by Alex Wolfe and Christian Mua evened the score 2-2.

The Cougars broke the 2-2 tie in the third when their hottest hitter, Austin Hall, hit a two-out solo shot to left field.

The Bulldogs stranded three runners in scoring position between the third and fifth innings but came through in the sixth. With two out, Bonczyk singled to center field, stole his second bag on the evening and tied the game on Marco Gonzales' RBI single to the second baseman. After Gonzales moved to second on a wild pitch, Halcomb brought in the fourth run with a RBI single to left.

But the lead didn't last long. In the home half of the seventh, Mua hit a leadoff double, advanced to third on a groundout and erased the Bulldogs lead on Stephen Wells' RBI single to right. One inning later, Olson struck out the first two batters but a triple by Brock Whitney followed by back-to-back singles by Mua and Adam Law put the Cougars ahead of the Bulldogs 6-4.

The Bulldogs and Cougars return for the middle game of the WCC series Friday at 5 p.m. PDT

Zags Offense Explode, Gonzales Fans 12 To Beat BYU 13-1

PROVO, Utah - The Gonzaga University baseball team used 17 hits, including five doubles, and a brilliant pitching performance from Marco Gonzales to post a 13-1 win over BYU to even the three-game West Coast Conference series Friday evening.

Gonzales (8-2), who was given double duties for the seventh time this season, went 2-for-3 with a double. Although he was relieved of his hitting duties in the sixth, he remained in the game as the pitcher. He punched out 12 batters and allowing four hits and a walk in eight shutout innings.

His batterymate Maxx Garrett continued to stay hot at the plate Friday, going 3-for-3 with a double, two RBI and a sacrifice bunt to extend his hitting streak to six games.

The Bulldogs (33-22, 13-10 WCC) got a lot of production from the top four batters in the lineup as Clayton Eslick, Steven Halcomb, Royce Bolinger and Alex Stanford combined for eight hits, three two-baggers, nine runs and seven RBI.

After two scoreless frames, the Bulldogs took advantage of two Cougar (22-26, 10-13 WCC) errors to put two runs on the board in the third. With one out, Halcomb hit grounder to shortstop Tanner Chauncey, but his throw to first for the putout sailed wide and out of play, allowing Halcomb to advance to second. Halcomb advanced to third on a wild pitch and although Bolinger grounded out, Stanford backed the No. 3 hitter with a RBI double. With Andy Hunter at the plate, Stanford advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored when catcher Wes Guenther's throw to third baseman Austin Hall to tag bounced by him and into the outfield.

The Bulldogs extended their lead in the fifth inning using four singles by Eslick, Halcomb, Stanford and Gonzales followed by a two-out RBI double by Garrett to give the Bulldogs a 6-0 lead.

Gonzaga put the game out of reach by scoring six runs in the sixth. Billy Moon led off with a single to left and Alex Bonczyk laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Moon over, but a fielding error by first baseman Brock Whitney allowed the speedy center fielder to reach first base safely. After Eslick received a free pass to first to load the bases, Halcomb drove in a run after being hit by the pitch and Bolinger followed with a two-run double down the left field line. Stanford brought Halcomb home with a groundout and Hunter drove in Bolinger with a double to right center. Hunter moved to third on pinch hitter Brock Slavin's groundout and scored the Bulldogs 12th run on Garrett's single through the left side.

The Bulldogs got their 13th run across in the seventh inning when Halcomb hit a one-out single, advanced to third on a wild pitch and a passed ball and scored on Bolinger's single through the left side.

Gonzales retired seven straight batters before turning it over to Sean Santschi in the ninth. Santschi surrendered a leadoff single and three wild pitches to allow the Cougars to score their only run, but the senior secured the win for the Bulldogs by striking out three.

The Bulldogs will close the regular-season looking to take the WCC series from the Cougars Saturday at noon PDT.

Zags Use 10-Run Third Inning To Win Regular-Season Finale

PROVO, Utah - The Gonzaga University baseball team scored 10 runs in the third inning and added seven more late in the game to finish its regular-season with a 17-1 West Coast Conference victory over BYU Saturday afternoon.

Gonzaga, which finishes the regular-season 34-22 overall, now waits to see what their NCAA Baseball Championship fate is. The selection show is set for Monday at 9 a.m. PDT on ESPNU.

The Bulldogs also finish the WCC season with a 14-10 record and are currently a half of a game ahead of the University of San Francisco and Loyola Marymount University for third place in the standings. The Dons bounced back from Friday's loss to beat Saint Mary's College 9-7, while the Lions fell 7-6 at Santa Clara University. The Bulldogs can finish tied for third or take sole possession if both the Lions and Dons lose to their respective opponents Sunday.

The final game of the regular-season between the Bulldogs and Cougars (22-27, 10-14 WCC) started an hour late due to a rain delay. But the delay did not stop Andy Hunter (5-2) from throwing eight stellar innings. The senior allowed one run on four hits and a walk while punching out seven.

The Bulldogs scored all the runs they needed to win the game in the third. Clayton Eslick, Steven Halcomb and Royce Bolinger quickly loaded the bases with three consecutive singles into the outfield and Tyler Westensee (0-3) walked Alex Stanford and his pitching counterpart Hunter to force in two runs and end his day early. After Adam Miller checked into the game, Marco Gonzales cleared the bases with a double to center field and a throwing error by second baseman Adam Law allowed the first baseman to advance to third. Miller would walk Maxx Garrett and surrender a RBI single to Billy Moon before striking out Alex Bonczyk struck out for the first out. Eslick would win a free pass to first in his second at-bat in the inning and Halcomb ended Miller's day with a two-run single. Cameron Keysor tried to stop the Bulldogs hitting barrage, but a two-run double by Bolinger his team ahead of the Cougars 10-0. Keysor ended the inning with back-to-back groundouts.

The Bulldogs would go scoreless in the fourth inning but would score at least a run in each inning the rest of the game. Similar the third inning, the Bulldogs started the fifth quickly loading the bases with three consecutive singles by Bonczyk, Eslick and Halcomb. Bolinger and Stanford both hit sacrifice flies to right field to give the Bulldogs a 12-0 lead.

Gonzaga took a 14-0 lead in the sixth when Gonzales hit a lead-off single to right and Billy Moon hit a two-run shot to right field.

Cameron Alvarado opened the seventh with a pinch-hit walk, Payden Cawley Lamb and Gonzales both singled to right to load the bases and a double play ball hit by Garrett was enough for Alvarado to score the 15th run.

Hunter retired 15 of the first 18 batters he faced, which included nine straight between the third and sixth innings, but the Cougars stopped his momentum in the seventh. Hall led off the inning with a base hit to second base, advanced to second on Alex Wolfe's groundout to first and scored the Cougars only run on Christian Mua's single up the middle.

Bonczyk christened the eighth frame with a single to center, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on Halcomb's double to center.

With one out in the ninth, Garrett was hit by the pitch and scored the Bulldogs 17th run on Brock Slavin's double to opposite field.

Ryan Leahy took over for Hunter in the ninth and quickly retired the side in order on 12 pitches.
