ZAGS IN THE WCC STANDINGS: After taking two games at Saint Mary's College last weekend, Gonzaga University improved its West Coast Conference record to 9-9 WCC to move into a tie for fifth place with the University of San Francisco in the conference standings. Both the Bulldogs and Dons are four games behind first-place University of San Diego, which improved its record to 13-5 last weekend. Pepperdine University moved into a tie with Loyola Marymount University - which was idle in conference play last weekend - for second place in the standings at 9-6, while the University of Portland sits in fourth at 10-8. Behind the Bulldogs and Dons are BYU (7-8), Saint Mary's (6-12) and Santa Clara University (3-12).

SCOUTING THE SUN DEVILS: Arizona State University hits the road after sweeping Pacific-12 Conference newcomer University of Utah in three games by the scores of 5-3, 17-1, 4-2 last weekend in Tempe. Their trip to Gonzaga this weekend will be the second visit to eastern Washington. The Sun Devils took on Washington State University two weeks ago. Infielder Joey DeMichele has been a dangerous hitter this season as he carries a team-best .347 batting average with 10 doubles, six triples, six home runs, 40 RBI. Infielder Abe Ruiz is also dangerous at the plate. He owns a .301 batting average and leads the ballclub with 16 two-baggers, 10 round trippers, 40 RBI and has a .583 slugging percentage. On the pitching side, right-hander Trevor Williams has started 12 of his 13 appearances and carries a 9-2 record with a 1.87 ERA, both statistics are team bests. Fellow righty Brady Rodgers has started all 12 appearances, and although is 8-2 with a 2.16 ERA, he leads the team with 70 strikeouts.

LAST TIME VS. THE SUN DEVILS: The last time Gonzaga University and Arizona State University met was at the Coca-Cola Spring Training Tournament in Surprise, Ariz., in 2007. The Sun Devils struck early and went on to use 14 hits to beat the Bulldogs 9-2. GU starting pitcher Clayton Mortensen suffered the loss for Gonzaga, allowing five runs on nine hits, four walks in six innings of work. Mortensen also struck out four Arizona State batters. CJ McClure saw time out of the bullpen, throwing the final two innings of the game. Arizona State used run-scoring singles in both the first and second innings to take an early 2-0 lead before adding an additional three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Gonzaga was held scoreless until the seventh inning, when Ryan Wiegand took the first pitch of his at-bat and homered over the right field wall. The Sun Devils added another four runs in the bottom of the eighth before Gonzaga's Darin Holcomb, who reached base on a double, was scored on a single to left field by Mark Ellis.

ON DECK: Following the non-conference series against Arizona State University, Gonzaga University will close its home schedule against West Coast Conference foes University of Portland next weekend. The series begins Friday at 6 p.m.

Sun Devils Hit Three HR's, Down Error-Prone Bulldogs 10-1

SPOKANE, Wash. - Arizona State University used three early home runs, four costly Gonzaga University errors and a strong pitching performance from Trevor Williams to down the Bulldogs 10-1 Saturday in the middle game of a three-game non-conference baseball series at Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field.

Gonzaga (29-19) will try to avoid a series sweep Sunday at 1 p.m. with Marco Gonzales (6-1) taking the mound.

Most of the 1,338 fans in attendance Saturday probably though they would see the left-handed Gonzales get the nod, but Gonzaga head coach Mark Machtolf decided to let the sophomore have one more day of rest between starts. Gonzales has pitched nearly nineteen innings in his past two starts, including an 11-inning outing two weeks ago in which he threw 144 pitches.

It didn't take the Sun Devils (31-17) long to get to Zags starter Derek Callahan, making his fourth start in 11 appearances this season. The freshman from Redmond, Wash., lasted just two-thirds of an inning, but he didn't get much help from his defense...

Despite suffering the loss, Gonzales (6-2) went the distance for the third time on the season. He struck out four batters and allowed 10 hits and three walks. The Bulldogs (29-20) were held to four base hits on the afternoon. Steven Halcomb had two while Gonzales and Clayton Eslick had one...
