SCOUTING THE BRONCOS: Santa Clara University 18-12 overall, but 1-5 in West Coast Conference play under its new head coach Dan O’Brien. The Broncos are coming off an 8-5 home win over their Bay Area rival University of California Wednesday, but were swept on the road by Cal State Bakersfield last weekend. Three position players have not missed a start this season. Outfielder Pat Stover leads that group with a .296 batting average with 21 RBI, second most behind the team’s leader and fellow outfielder Andrew Biancardi, who has 23. Senior left-hander Tyler Olson kept the Broncos scoreless by throwing a complete-game 9-0 shutout victory and although he allowed two earned runs and the combination of sophomore lefty Marco Gonzales and former Zag Cody Martin helped the Zags complete the sweep with an 8-3 win. Junior outfielder Billy Moon led the effort at the plate for the Bulldogs in the series, going 6-for-13 (.462) with a double and three RBI. Santa Clara
infielder Kyle DeMerritt went 4-for-10 (.400) to lead the team in that category and outfielders Matt Ozanne and Lucas Herbst scored the three runs for the Broncos...

every baseball club on a weighted scale taking into factors such as a team’s winning percentage, its opponents’ winning percentage and the winning percentage of those opponents’ opponents. Six of the Bulldogs opponents currently sit in the top 40. The University of Arkansas and University of Oregon are above the Bulldogs at No. 18 and No. 21, respectively, while the University of Washington (No. 28), University of San Diego (No. 29), Pepperdine University (No. 31) and Arizona State University (No. 38) are the other four opponents sitting in the top 40.

Marco Gonzales improved his record to 5-0.

Zags Beat Broncos In Gonzales' Return To Take WCC Series

SPOKANE, Wash. - Royce Bolinger hit a three-run home run to erase an early two-run deficit and a three-run fourth inning helped the Gonzaga University baseball team take down Santa Clara University 8-3 to clinch the three-game West Coast Conference series Saturday.

After having surgery to repair a torn meniscus on his right leg nearly three weeks ago, Marco Gonzales (5-0) was given the starting nod by head coach Mark Machtolf for the first time since March 25. The sophomore threw 82 pitches in five innings and although he struck out four batters, he allowed two earned runs on six hits and two walks.

Machtolf was pleased with Gonzales performance.

"He didn't have the stuff he normally has, but he gave us five good innings and I'm happy about that," Machtolf said.

David Bigelow took over for Gonzales in the sixth inning and threw three shutout innings before handing the ball to Sean-Luke Brija, who got the save after the Broncos threatened to do serious damage with the bases loaded in the ninth inning.

Along with his two-run shot, Bolinger added two base hits and a walk on the afternoon. Maxx Garrett also hit a home run and Eric Lane had two hits and a successful suicide squeeze play to drive in a run. Clayton Eslick, Alex Bonczyk and Brock Slavin stretched their only base hit in the game into a double. ...

The Bulldogs will look to sweep the WCC series Sunday at 1 p.m.

Brock Slavin's first collegiate home run helped the Bulldogs sweep the Broncos.

Slavin, Hunter Lead Zags To WCC Series Sweep Over Santa Clara

SPOKANE, Wash. - Brock Slavin hit his first three-run home run in the fifth inning and Andy Hunter went the distance for the second time this season as the two helped the Gonzaga University baseball team rally and beat Santa Clara University 4-1 to complete the West Coast Conference series sweep Sunday afternoon.

Slavin, Marco Gonzales and Eric Lane led the effort at the plate with two hits each. The Bulldogs also got a base hit from Steven Halcomb and a RBI from Gonzales.

Hunter (3-2), who had to miss Saturday's game to write an exam, struggled on the mound early in the game. The first batter doubled to right field to start the game and after a sacrifice bunt, the Broncos (18-15, 1-8 WCC) got on board after a groundout to second baseman Alex Stanford brought in the first run of the day.

Although he wouldn't allow a run after the first inning, Hunter would get himself into trouble in the next four innings as he would allow a runner to reach at least third base in each inning. But he would have help from good defensive performances by his teammates to escape the threats.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs (25-9, 6-3 WCC) bats had a hard time breaking through Bronco starting pitcher Mike Couch (1-5). Gonzales would record the Bulldogs first two hits off of Couch in the first and fourth innings.

It wasn't until the fifth inning when the rest of the Bulldogs figured out Couch. With one out, Stanford got on base after he was hit by the pitch and Halcomb followed with a base hit to left center field but was forced out on Billy Moon's grounder to second base. With two strikes in his at-bat, the left-handed hitting Slavin sent a pitch just over the fence in left field for his first homer to give the Bulldogs a 3-1. Slavin received a loud celebration from his teammates in the dugout as he circled around the bases....

The Bulldogs will have Monday to rest as Washington State University will make a second visit to the Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field Tuesday for a 6 p.m. start. The Bulldogs won the first meeting in Spokane 9-3 back on April 3.
