One objection has to be lodged, however: Blanchette uses the phrase "mitigated against" when in fact he should have written "militated against."

To mitigate is to make less severe. This is a common malapropism and misuse:

I would normally indicate that I would expect the editors at the S-R to catch this, but I won't go there.
