No. 22 Bulldogs Fall To Lobos For First Loss Of The Season

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Despite coming back in the middle of the game, the 22nd-ranked Gonzaga University baseball team couldn't hold on to the lead as the University of New Mexico used a five-run eighth inning to beat the Bulldogs 11-6 and hand them their first loss of the season Friday evening.

Alex Stanford recorded two of the Bulldogs six hits to lead the team while he, Maxx Garrett and Billy Moon each recorded a RBI. Steven Halcomb saw his hitting streak come to an end at 10 games after the junior shortstop went hitless on the evening.

Bulldog starter Tyler Olson struck out four batters but gave up 10 hits and four runs in 5 1/3 innings of work, Derek Peterson allowed two runs in one inning and Zach Abbruzza suffered the loss after he allowed five runs in the eighth inning.

The Lobos struck first in the second inning when they used a one-out double and two RBI singles to take a 2-0 lead. One inning later, Olson surrendered a leadoff double followed by a RBI triple and a sacrifice bunt to bring in their third and fourth run of the game.

The Bulldogs got back into the game in the fifth inning. Andy Hunter led off with a single up the middle and Alex Bonczyk received a free pass to first base. Following two fly outs, Clayton Eslick and Royce Bolinger both reached safely on back-to-back fielding errors by the left fielder and Stanford's RBI double to left field tied the game 4-4.

Steven Halcomb was hit by the pitch to lead off the seventh inning and advanced to third on Eslick's double to left field. After Bolinger was hit by the pitch to load the bases, Stanford hit into a fielder's choice as the first baseman's throw to the catcher forced Halcomb out at home. Lobo pitcher Hobie McClain forced in the go-ahead run when he walked Garrett. Moon would hit a fly ball to center field deep enough to bring Bolinger home to give the Bulldogs a 6-4 lead.

The Lobos answered back in their half of the seventh inning. Peterson hit the first batter he faced and a one-out double setup two runners in scoring position. Abbruzza came into the game after and although he struck out the first batter he faced, he would surrender a two-run double to tie the game 6-6.

New Mexico was able to retake as it used three singles, a walk, two sacrifice flies and a two-run double to score five runs in the eighth inning to take a 11-6 lead.

The middle game of the non-conference series will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. PST.

No. 22 Zags Score First But Fall To Lobos In 10 Innings

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The 22nd-ranked Gonzaga University baseball team scored first in the first inning, but it couldn't close the game as the University of New Mexico rallied in the ninth inning and beat the Bulldogs 2-1 in 10 innings.

Andy Hunter struck out six batters and allowed five hits in 8 1/3 solid innings. David Bigelow (2-1) threw 2/3 of an inning but received the loss after he walked in the winning run in the 10th.

Royce Bolinger and Marco Gonzales each recorded two base hits to lead the Bulldogs (10-2) on the afternoon. Eric Lane had a double and Clayton Eslick stretched a base hit into a triple.

Lobo starting pitcher Austin House allowed the unearned run but struck out nine Bulldogs in nine innings pitched.

The Bulldogs got on the board in the first inning when Steven Halcomb hit a one-out single up the middle and after Eslick popped up to third base for the second out, Bolinger singled to right field and an error by the right fielder allowed Halcomb to score....

After holding the Lobos (4-9) scoreless throughout the entire game, Hunter ran into trouble trying to close it out in the ninth inning. He retired the first batter he faced but allowed a single and a walk to end his day. Billy Moon, who started the game in left field, was called to take over for Hunter and after he moved both runners into scoring position on a wild pitch, the Lobos used a sacrifice fly to tie the game 1-1. Moon moved back to his post in left field and Bigelow replaced him on the mound. He ended the inning by striking out the first batter he faced.

The Bulldogs got into trouble in the 10th inning when Bigelow surrendered a leadoff triple. With one out, he intentionally walked the next two batters to load the bases but a third walk brought in the winning run for the Lobos.

The Zags and Lobos conclude the three-game non-conference series Sunday at noon PDT.
