SCOUTING THE LOBOS: The University of New Mexico is coming off a 16-12 loss to its in-state rival New Mexico State University in a slugfest last Tuesday. The Lobos tallied 15 hits while the Aggies recorded 18. Corner infielder DJ Peterson has been the most productive at the plate, batting .372 with four doubles, a triple, three home runs and 13 RBI. Infielder Josh Melendez, who was named the Mountain West Conference Player of the Week Monday, has also been a productive offensively. His .385 batting average and 13 runs scored are the best on the team. He also leads the Lobos in stolen bases with six.

LAST TIME VS. THE LOBOS: Gonzaga University swept the three-game series with the University of New Mexico last season in Spokane. The Bulldogs took game one 3-0, game two 17-4 and game three 6-2. Junior outfielder Billy Moon went 7-for-13 in the series, including four doubles and a home run. The Bulldogs also had three of its starting pitchers, Ryan Carpenter, senior Tyler Olson and sophomore Marco Gonzales, receive a win. Carpenter threw seven shutout innings, Olson threw 6 1/3 innings and Gonzales went from start to finish for the third consecutive start.

ONLY TWO UNDEFEATED TEAMS REMAIN: Gonzaga University is one of only two teams in the NCAA Division I level still undefeated after 10 games played, joining No. 23 University of Kentucky. The Wildcats improved their record to 13-0 after defeating Marshall University 7-3 at home last Wednesday....

PITCHING CONTINUES TO BE STRONG: Gonzaga University's pitching staff has been very impressive. The Bulldogs 2.23 team ERA ranks 17th out of the 291 NCAA Division I schools and it is the best in the West Coast Conference. The Bulldogs also lead the WCC for the fewest walks (24), doubles (10) and runs allowed, both earned (23) and unearned (32). The Bulldogs have also not allowed a triple.

THE BATS ARE AWAKE: Gonzaga University has recorded more than 10 hits in all but two of the 10 games played this season. The Bulldogs racked up 20 hits to set as a season-high in their 13-3 win over the University of Illinois in San Antonio, Texas, Feb. 24. The Bulldogs were held to three hits against the University of Texas - San Antonio last Saturday for a season-low, but they managed to drive in two runs to defeat the Roadrunners 4-1.

A HUGE TURNAROUND FOR HALCOMB: Last season, Gonzaga University's Steven Halcomb batted .108 with no extra base hits or a RBI after the first 10 games. This season, the junior shortstop enters game 11 leading the West Coast Conference hitting .467. He has also recorded three doubles, 10 RBI and he leads the team in stolen bases with three....

No. 22 Bulldogs Fall To Lobos For First Loss Of The Season

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Despite coming back in the middle of the game, the 22nd-ranked Gonzaga University baseball team couldn't hold on to the lead as the University of New Mexico used a five-run eighth inning to beat the Bulldogs 11-6 and hand them their first loss of the season Friday evening.

Alex Stanford recorded two of the Bulldogs six hits to lead the team while he, Maxx Garrett and Billy Moon each recorded a RBI. Steven Halcomb saw his hitting streak come to an end at 10 games after the junior shortstop went hitless on the evening.

Bulldog starter Tyler Olson struck out four batters but gave up 10 hits and four runs in 5 1/3 innings of work, Derek Peterson allowed two runs in one inning and Zach Abbruzza suffered the loss after he allowed five runs in the eighth inning.

The Lobos struck first in the second inning when they used a one-out double and two RBI singles to take a 2-0 lead. One inning later, Olson surrendered a leadoff double followed by a RBI triple and a sacrifice bunt to bring in their third and fourth run of the game.

The Bulldogs got back into the game in the fifth inning. Andy Hunter led off with a single up the middle and Alex Bonczyk received a free pass to first base. Following two fly outs, Clayton Eslick and Royce Bolinger both reached safely on back-to-back fielding errors by the left fielder and Stanford's RBI double to left field tied the game 4-4.

Steven Halcomb was hit by the pitch to lead off the seventh inning and advanced to third on Eslick's double to left field. After Bolinger was hit by the pitch to load the bases, Stanford hit into a fielder's choice as the first baseman's throw to the catcher forced Halcomb out at home. Lobo pitcher Hobie McClain forced in the go-ahead run when he walked Garrett. Moon would hit a fly ball to center field deep enough to bring Bolinger home to give the Bulldogs a 6-4 lead.

The Lobos answered back in their half of the seventh inning. Peterson hit the first batter he faced and a one-out double setup two runners in scoring position. Abbruzza came into the game after and although he struck out the first batter he faced, he would surrender a two-run double to tie the game 6-6.

New Mexico was able to retake as it used three singles, a walk, two sacrifice flies and a two-run double to score five runs in the eighth inning to take a 11-6 lead.

The middle game of the non-conference series will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. PST.

Andy Hunter threw 8 1/3 solid innings but the Zags couldn't hold on to the lead.

No. 22 Zags Score First But Fall To Lobos In 10 Innings

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The 22nd-ranked Gonzaga University baseball team scored first in the first inning, but it couldn't close the game as the University of New Mexico rallied in the ninth inning and beat the Bulldogs 2-1 in 10 innings.

Andy Hunter struck out six batters and allowed five hits in 8 1/3 solid innings. David Bigelow (2-1) threw 2/3 of an inning but received the loss after he walked in the winning run in the 10th.

Royce Bolinger and Marco Gonzales each recorded two base hits to lead the Bulldogs (10-2) on the afternoon. Eric Lane had a double and Clayton Eslick stretched a base hit into a triple.

Lobo starting pitcher Austin House allowed the unearned run but struck out nine Bulldogs in nine innings pitched.

The Bulldogs got on the board in the first inning when Steven Halcomb hit a one-out single up the middle and after Eslick popped up to third base for the second out, Bolinger singled to right field and an error by the right fielder allowed Halcomb to score....

After holding the Lobos (4-9) scoreless throughout the entire game, Hunter ran into trouble trying to close it out in the ninth inning. He retired the first batter he faced but allowed a single and a walk to end his day. Billy Moon, who started the game in left field, was called to take over for Hunter and after he moved both runners into scoring position on a wild pitch, the Lobos used a sacrifice fly to tie the game 1-1. Moon moved back to his post in left field and Bigelow replaced him on the mound. He ended the inning by striking out the first batter he faced.

The Bulldogs got into trouble in the 10th inning when Bigelow surrendered a leadoff triple. With one out, he intentionally walked the next two batters to load the bases but a third walk brought in the winning run for the Lobos.

The Zags and Lobos conclude the three-game non-conference series Sunday at noon PDT.
