Alex Stanford’s RBI triple broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning and the Gonzaga University baseball team would go to beat the University of Kansas 7-2 to sweep the three-game UTSA Classic and improve its perfect record to 10-0 Sunday afternoon.

After recording a season-low three hits in their win against the University of Texas – San Antonio Saturday night, the Bulldogs returned to form and produced a 14-hit barrage against the Jayhawks (5-5). Steven Halcomb led the Zags with four hits to extend his hitting streak to a career-best eight games. He also drove in a pair of runs, stole two bases and touched home plate four times. Royce Bolinger had three hits including a double and four RBI. Billy Moon also had three hits on the day.

Andy Hunter (2-0) threw eight solid innings, surrendering the two runs on six hits. He also struck out eight batters and at one point he retired 14 straight. Zach Abbruzza closed out the ninth allowing only a walk.

The Jayhawks, designated as the visiting team, used three base hits and a sacrifice bunt to grab an early lead in the first inning.

But the Zags answered back when it was their turn to bat in the first inning. Eric Lane got the offense started with a walk and Halcomb followed with a base hit to left field. Although Clayton Eslick couldn’t move both runners into scoring position after his bunt popped up to the catcher, Bolinger backed him with a two-run double down the left field line to give the Zags a 2-1 lead. After Stanford was hit by the pitch and Garrett flew out to the first baseman, Moon followed with a single to left field. Bolinger tried to score from second base on the play but the left fielder’s throw to the catcher was in time for the third out.

In the Jayhawks half of the second inning, Hunter allowed a leadoff single to right field and a two-out RBI single brought in the runner to tie the game 2-2. Hunter would go on to be unhittable for the next 14 batters he faced.

The Bulldogs had an opportunity to retake the lead in the fourth inning when Garrett and Moon hit back-to-back one-out singles. Cameron Alvarado would load the bases with a single to right field, but Lane couldn’t bring them in as he grounded out to third base to end the inning.

Halcomb led off the fifth inning with a single to right field and after he stole second base, Stanford broke the 2-2 tie with a two-out RBI triple down the right field line.

Gonzaga added more runs to the board one inning later. Moon led the inning off with a single to left center field and he advanced to second on Travis Forbes sacrifice bunt. After Lane drew a two-out walk, Halcomb followed with a two-run double to left field. The Bulldogs took a 6-2 lead when Bolinger’s single to left center field brought Halcomb home from second base.

The Bulldogs got one more run in the eighth inning. Halcomb hit a one-out single to center field. He stole second base for the second time on the day and once again Bolinger brought him home with a two-out RBI single to center field.

The Bulldogs will head to Albuquerque, N.M., to play a three-game series with the defending Mountain West Conference Tournament champions University of Mexico next weekend.
