Just heard about this, and gotta say that's pretty impressive. I don't even remember who my commencement speaker was.

In 1975, the commencement speaker was Oregon Congressman Al Ullman. Gonzaga gave out waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay toooooooooooooooo many "honorary doctorates." Too many speeches that went on too long.
My daughter graduates this Spring and it will be special to hear Desmond Tutu.

The 1979 Commencement speaker was Henry Steele Commager.

Who ? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Steele_Commager)

He sucked. For 45 minutes. Imagine a lifeless monotone coming from a low fidelity PA system.

Multiply it by two.

That was Henry Steele Comatose. He didn't live to be 86 by wasting his energy on entertaining an audience.

Worst public speaker ever.

Congrats to GU for landing a marquee name for this year's festivities.

Al did not stick around for all the festivities; he left early to catch a plane back to DC.

1978 commencement speaker was Bob Hope. Instead of playing "Pomp and Circumstance" as the recessional, they played "Thanks for the Memories." It was pretty cool.
