    WCC regular season "perfect" races

I did some research on the question:

"What is the fewest number of combined WCC regular season losses the top 2 teams have had this decade?"

With the balanced schedule the lowest possible number of combined losses is 2.

Currently, GU and SMC have a combined total of 1 loss which magnifies the importance of every game. Since they play each other again the lowest possible number of losses between them will be 2 if they were to otherwise win out.

    Here's the rest:
Combined losses for 1st & 2nd place teams in WCC regular season

    10-11: 6 GU 13-3, SMC 11-3
    09-10: 5 GU 12-2, SMC 11-3
    08-09: 4 GU 14-0, SMC 10-4
    07-08: 3 GU 13-1, SMC 12-2
    06-07: 7 GU 11-3, SCU 10-4
    05-06: 6 GU 14-0, SMC 8-6
    04-05: 5 GU 12-2, SMC 11-3
    03-04: 5 GU 14-0, SMC 9-5
    02-03: 6 GU 12-2, USD 10-4
    01-02: 2 GU 13-1, PEP 13-1

Conclusion: There has been one other "perfect" WCC regular season. Back in 01-02 when Zags had already lost on the road to undefeated PEP and faced a must win game in the old Kennel to hand the Waves their only loss and earn a share of the WCC title. They pounded the Waves that night and went on to the Sweet 16.

    Go Zags

Doing the research, I was also struck by the fact that SMC has finished second to GU 6 of the past 8 seasons while sharing the title with us just once. No wonder they hate our guts.

Here's to more of the same!

Hard to believe SMC claimed a share of the conference title last season. After all GU played 2 more games and had two more wins than SMC...

Second place record was 8-6 in 2005-2006? That's terrible.

Good research and very interesting, especially for someone who really likes numbers.

The teams that finished second, other than SMC, this year have a combined 24-39 (5-22 league) record. Definitely an accomplishment to stay on top. Let's hope we can win-out and ensure no more than 1 loss.
