Figured it is time to get the thread up for the next season.

Big dates coming up
Ripping this from Jeremiah Oshan. Sounders at Heart is a pretty good blog. Bookmark it.
http://www.sounderatheart.com/2011/11/7/2543769/mls-offseason-schedule-seattle-sounders-dates

Nov. 21: Teams submit finalized list of protected players for Expansion Draft. Each team can protect up to 11 players, exempting Generation Adidas and Homegrown players.

Nov. 21: Allocation order resets. Sounders will be 15th.

Nov. 23: Expansion Draft held. Montreal Impact select 10 players, with no more than 1 coming from each team.

Nov. 23: Waiver Draft held. Player released by teams can be selected by other teams with the order determined by the reverse order of the standings.

Dec. 5: Re-Entry Draft, Stage 1. Players can choose to enter this draft if they fail to come to contract terms with their current teams and meet certain experience standards. Selecting teams are bound by various contractual obligations to the players. (explanation here) (http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2011/10/20/mls-announces-re-entry-draft-set-dec-5-and-12)

Dec. 12: Re-Entry Draft, Stage 2. Players that go unselected in Stage 1 are eligible here, the difference being that selecting teams can negotiate new contracts.

Jan. 1: The first of the international transfer windows open.

Jan. 12: MLS SuperDraft. Two rounds long. Sounders will select 15th.

Jan. 17: MLS Supplemental Draft. Four rounds long.

Regarding the expansion draft, you can read about the details of it here http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2011/10/19/mls-releases-details-montreal-expansion-draft

Also, with the LA Galaxy wining MLS Cup tonight they have qualified for the 2012/13 group stage in two positions. The 2nd group stage berth then gets handed down to the MLS team with the next best record in the regular season which happens to be the Seattle Sounders. The Seattle Sounders have thus qualified with a group stage berth and a preliminary round berth(Via winning the USOC). That preliminary round spot goes to the next best team in MLS standings which happens to be Real Salt Lake. Houston Dynamo have the US's other preliminary round spot. So it looks like this...

USSF berths for 2012/13 CCL
USSF 1: LA Galaxy
USSF 2: Seattle Sounders
USSF 3: Houston Dynamo
USSF 4: Real Salt Lake

And finally...

3/7/2012 - 7pm - Santos Laguna @ Seattle Sounders - first leg of CCL quarterfinals (2011/12 edition)
3/14/2012 - 5pm - Seattle Sounders @ Santos Laguna - second leg of CCL quarterfinals

If the Sounders advance they will play the winner of Toronto FC vs LA Galaxy.

As a side note, I think it's cool that the Eagle's Nest will be opened in CenturyLink to add 2200+ more seats for nearly 40,000 capacity.

Also, FIFA Prez Sepp Blatter suggests MLS should go to FIFA calendar, meaning the season would begin in Late-August and run through winter into May. I kinda disagree due to 1) weather and 2) NFL would overshadow it to the point of oblivion. I like Grant Wahl's proposal much better.

Thanks for the dates and lists, asoc.

I think it is 38500 for max attendance. If its selling out still, I assume it will, expect average attendance to be anywhere from 38,500 to 39,000.

I expect they will open up more of the stadium for a few games again this season though. So maybe average 40k-41k by the end of the season.

Blatter has no clue what he is talking about.
You pretty much hit the nail on the head Bob regarding why MLS will never go to a winter schedule.

BTW, word is NBC is trying to get Arlo White to be their PBP guy. Sounders fans do not want to lose Arlo.

BobZag
11-23-2011, 09:43 AM
Arlo is great. I don't even have to watch to know exactly what's happening on the pitch when he calls the game.

I see CenturyLink is putting in new FieldTurf "Revolution" after the NFL season; the first event to be played on it will be Sounders in CONCACAF CL match in early March.

I'd like to see Sigi get Brian Ching. Yeah, he's past his prime but he's still worth half a dozen goals and provides veteran leadership. Plus, he's a Zag. Probably has two or three good years in MLS remaining.

I liked the sounds of that foreign goalkeeper that was mentioned a few weeks ago. Seattle needs a great keeper to fill Keller's shoes.

I would have preferred they protected Fucito over Evans. His ability to stretch the field alone, and even more so when Rosales is playing, I think is far more important than whatever Evans brings to an already well stocked midfield.

Interesting they didn't protect any of their outside backs.

re: Ching. Unfortunately that would be duplication of what they have in Ochoa.

Ching goes #1 to Montreal.

Sounders lose Reilly. Measured response since we didn't lose Fucito but the Sounders have zero replacements with any experience and Reilly combined very nicely down the right flank with Rosales. Sounders now have to make a move for a right back.

edit: And the Sounders trade Tyson Wahl. Now they need two outside backs unless all eggs are in on the young Michael Tetteh.

Reilly must be pretty valuable since the Impact were able to get a 2 for 1:

After picking Riley, Montreal turned around and traded him to Chivas for forward Justin Braun and midfielder Gerson Mayern.

asoc

Riley is a really great person. He did tons of charity work in the Seattle area, most notably with the Boys and Girls clubs.

Will be sad to see him go.

That being said, Zach Scott (Gonzaga Alumni) made some good strides this past season. It appeared he had taken over the pack up CB roll from Ianni and was starting at RB when Riley wasn't. He was used to shut down Brek Shea and did a pretty darn good job of it and was used in the final playoff game against RSL and did well for himself.

Leo Gonzalez is able to man our LB spot. We will still need depth at both RB and LB though. Would be great if Tetteh could step into a more prominent roll at LB.

Montreal got a bit for Riley. Justin Braun is a good pick up for them.

BobZag
11-24-2011, 08:49 AM
Agree. Braun is a good striker. Seattle will have to focus on defense, they could use some guys like DeLaGarza, Tim Ream or Omar Gonzalez. Maybe through the drafts and free agency market. But I like offense, so can't pass up a good attacking mid, winger or forward.

There has been quite a bit of controversy over Montreal picking Ching from Houston.

Heard a lot of Houston fans calling the Montreal organization all kinds of things because Montreal should have left Ching alone apparently. Ching stated he didn't want to go to Montreal and would retire if he was picked. But if Houston wanted to keep him around and let him retire in Houston they should have protected him. Montreal just wants to trade him back to Houston but Houston is going to try to refuse. Huge poker game on seeing who will bluff first between Montreal, Houston and even Ching. Maybe Ching decides he is willing to play in Montreal to end his career after all. Maybe a third team steps in to help facilitate a trade all teams can deal with.

Forgive me since I haven't followed real close, but doesn't Ching want to stay in Houston even after retiring, due to this draft or not? He's got a job in the FO waiting for him, correct?

Yes, he wants to stay in Houston.

He can retire, drop his 400k+ salary for 2012 and go work for the Dynamo in some capacity. Pay won't be as good though.

He wants to play in the new Dynamo stadium though as well.

Former Austrian International Michael Gspurning to replace Keller? Will this happen, or is it just rumor? He sounds good.

asoc
11-25-2011, 04:07 PM
Seattle has been pursuing him. But that doesn't mean its a done deal yet.
His contract will be up when the winter transfer window opens I believe. So Seattle can get him on a free transfer.

Seattle may still want Marcus Hahnemann though and the Austrian may be the back up if Seattle can't make the Hahnemann deal work.

Seattle has to go through the allocation order to get Marcus. Montreal holds the top spot and then from there on down it is based on reverse order of the 2011 standings I believe.

Montreal has shown they are willing to take players and hold them hostage to get what they want.

But yes, Gspurning is a very real possibility.

Finally some news on new players!

Sounders interested in Costa Rican international Heiner Mora to man the right back position. Not too old at 27 and it looks like he's currently playing with the Costa Rican national team, most recently at the Gold Cup and Copa America, which leads me to believe he's in decent form.

- Couple of rumors - one in and one out.

1. Alessandro Del Pierro. Not sure how he fits and this could be just a ploy to drive up interest as we've seen in it in the past with some of the players linked to Seattle.
Fox Soccer (http://msn.foxsports.com/foxsoccer/story/alessandro-del-piero-bound-for-united-states-seattle-chicago-galaxy-112411)

2. Alvaro Fernandez to the La Liga side Malaga. Heard this dropped a couple of times but only as rumor. Haven't searched the web to see if this has legs but it has shown up on a couple message boards.

- Terry Boss to retire. Really unfortunate turn for the man as things looked on the up for him just a few months ago.

Josh Mayers - Seattle Times (http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/soundersfcblog/2016895098_terry_boss_told_by_doctors_to.html)

- Also, Sounders pass on the options for Jaqua, Noonan and Graham. I think few didn't see this coming. I'd like to see Jaqua stay if only out of loyalty for his heroics during the 2nd run for the USOC.

BobZag

Why wasn't Portland's Darlington Nagbe listed on the protected players list?

Not sure Alvaro is good enough for Malaga in La Liga; he's one of my favorites and I think he's good but Malaga has big money and is going after top-notch talent.

As for keepers, I lean towards Gspurning, he's younger. I understand the local angle and he's quality, but at 40 how much longer before he retires?

xjzico
11-30-2011, 12:43 PM
Not to say I disagree, but I do recall some statistical analysis of MLS players which had Flaco as the best player in the league.

I would think Malaga, if really interested, would see Alvaro as a cheap, quality, squad player and I am sure Alvaro would love to ply his trade in La Liga to prove himself against the best and maintain relevance with the Uruguay national team.

I'd like to keep him until we have a good idea on Zakuani's recovery. If Zak comes back at his old form, toss in Neagle, and Rosales an automatic on the right, someone is going to be really unhappy.

edit: I believe this was the index where Alvaro was once number one. He finished 2nd.

Rumors are rumors.

The only ones I am giving any credit are the ones about acquiring the Costa Rican Right back and the 3 Hondurans.

Once the team declined their options on Jaqua and Noonan they are now able to renegotiate their contracts and they can still trade them before the reentry draft.

It is entirely possible the Sounders simply resign one or both players at a lower salary. If Jaqua ever has a year like 2009 again I would be ecstatic if its for the Sounders. Noonan helps calm the game down which has helped out our younger players quite a bit in USOC and CCL play.

But getting rid of both helps to clear up cap space.

Darlington Nagbe wasn't listed on the protected list for the same reason Michael Tetteh wasn't. They are both still Generation Adidas signings which are exempt from the expansion draft. Players basically have to play x amount of minutes to graduate out of the GA label. Zakuani was GA his first year but was a regular starter and he graduated after his first year.

Andy Najar was found in a DC area high school. While his family had recently moved to the US, I think DC was sort of lucky he fell into their lap.

Keep in mind there is a new DP rule going into effect in 2012. The young DP rule. Where younger DPs will count less against the cap than older ones. The idea is to encourage teams to bring in better and younger talent. Neither Montero or Fernandez fit the requirement, they are too old. I would expect the Sounders to be after another Montero though. A young player that will have an immediate impact coming into the team.

Oh, I guess the Sounders are actually looking for players to bring into their academy system. I think I read that somewhere.

I know they brought a kid over from Tanzania for a trial for the academy but haven't heard anything besides some article on a Tanzanian newspaper's website about a group of kids leaving to the US for trials. Haven't heard how everything went.

From multiple sources: "Designated Players do not have to be protected unless the player has a no trade clause in his contract." Oh, I see asoc stated this already. But I still did the research, dangit!

Timbers won't be giving up Nagbe any time soon.

At least one good rumor floating around about who the Timbers are picking up, but as eligibility in at least this case is yet to be confirmed, it's not a done deal. But, things are looking really, really sweet. :)

Mrisho Ngassa. From what I understand this was part of the Sounders opening an academy or some developmental relationship with Tanzanian clubs. Not sure the interest is serious or just obligatory. That being said there was a report that Ngassa has impressed and earned a pretty huge contract for a player in the Tanzanian league.

Generation Adidas is not the same as a Designated Player.

Generation Adidas is a program started by Nike actually. It was called Nike Project 40. It was designed to bring top College players out of school early.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generation_Adidas

Generation adidas is a joint venture between Major League Soccer and U.S. Soccer aimed at raising the level of young soccer talent in the United States.[1] The program, sponsored by adidas, encourages early entry (without college graduation) of American players into MLS. Until 2005, the program was sponsored by Nike and was called Project-40.[2]
Part of the appeal is that the program guarantees players college scholarships should their playing career not pan out.

And GA players do not count against the senior roster and the salary cap. Which is why I can see there being some confusion.

Regarding Designated Players and expansion drafts

If a DP has a no trade clause in their contract the team has to protect them as one of their 11, they aren't exempt.

J-league and K-league are probably better leagues than MLS. Right around the level of the FMF(Mexican league).

It would be difficult to bring over a top player from Japan or South Korea.

One of the reasons the Sounders are getting heavily involved in Tanzania is because it is an untapped market. The European teams haven't really gotten involved there yet. So the Sounders are building that relationship now. There is also some ties between Gambia and MLS with quite a few players from their youth national teams coming over after having been scouted at the 2007 U20 World Cup in Canada

There is a report that the Timbers will be able to sign UW senior Brent Richards to a home grown contract. It is a controversial issue because he has only played for the Timbers PDL team while he was in College. He has no ties to the timbers academy system. Timbers do sign Brent Richards but people with more knowledge of the situation have put to rest any sort of controversy imo.

Brad Evans and Jeff Parke get called into "Camp Cupcake" for the USMNT.
I like to think of Parke a sort of darkhorse to insert himself into the USMNT. I rate him pretty highly. Evans is confusing to me but I think a lot of fans are irrational in their hatred for him, he does a lot of things well when he isn't injured.

Evans and Parke filled the spots vacated by Omar Gonzalez and George John who both left for "Club issues."

John is reportedly in Europe hammering out a deal. He is in the final year of his contract and MLS wants to get something in return for him.

Supposedly Gonzalez is just looking at a short term loan but I don't buy it. You wouldn't leave the national team camp for a short term loan, it has to be something more substantial imo.

IMO, Evans is just not complementary to the strengths of the Sounders squad as a whole. Of course Sigi and I would probably disagree on what the squads strengths are.:) I worry for next year that the offense will stagnate and the goals dry up if Ochoa, White and Evans get a majority of time at their respective positions.

Agree on Parke, he's earned a shot.

Only bad thing about that is how much it overlaps with the college bball season. The past couple years, I could pretty much follow the Sounders when GU was done for the season (or close to it) and then follow GU when the Sounders' season was wrapping up. Now there'll be (well, hopefully I guess if they make the MLS Cup final) significant overlap.

Otherwise, good schedule. No E Coast travel after June, I think.

Omar Gonzalez tore his ACL during his first training session with Nürnberg.

Feel sorry for the guy. Gets his first call up to the USMNT, finds out he is wanted in Germany so he goes there on a short term loan which is basically a trial. Then during that first training session he has a collision with fellow USMNT defender Timothy Chandler and ends up with a torn ACL.

Sounders sign an up-and-coming Danish midfielder. 23 years old. He sounds good.

http://www.soundersfc.com/News/Articles/2012/01-January/Sounders-FC-signs-Christian-Sivebaek.aspx

Christian Sivebæk, 23, has played for Midtjylland in Denmark’s Superliga since 2006.

RENTON , WASH. – Seattle Sounders FC has signed Danish midfielder Christian Sivebaek following his transfer from Denmark’s FC Midtjylland, it was announced today. The signing will be finalized upon receipt of Sivebaek’s P-1 visa and International Clearance. Per Major League Soccer and club policy, terms of the transfer and contract were not disclosed.

“Christian is a player that we have been following for quite some time,” said Sounders FC technical director Chris Henderson. “He is a good one versus one dribbler who can provide consistent quality service to our strikers. He has good speed and physical presence.

“He has been an up and coming player in Denmark,” added Henderson, “and we are looking forward to adding Christian to our attacking arsenal.”

Portland's new DP. He sounds like a good one.

The Portland Timbers were looking for a strong target forward to help fill the role that Kenny Cooper never could quite fill, and they have turned to a proven goal-scorer to do the job.

The Timbers have signed Scottish striker Kris Boyd as a Designated Player, the team announced on Monday. Boyd, the Scottish Premier League's all-time leading scorer, joins the Timbers after a failed move to Turkish side Eskisehirspor ended prematurely due to unpaid wages.

Boyd had been in talks with the Houston Dynamo, but concerns about the heat in Texas, which can be brutal in the summer, ultimately led Boyd to pass on a move there before he eventually reached a deal with the Timbers. According to the Houston Chronicle, the Timbers are sending a first-round draft pick in 2013 to Houston for Boyd's Discovery rights.

I am not convinced yet.

The SPL is VERY top heavy. Its basically either Rangers or Celtic who have any shot at the title each year and the other teams aren't really comparable. So you end up with two relatively stacked teams that blow by everyone else. Stats can be misleading for players coming from those teams.

Galaxy were able to get Juninho back on lone from Sao Paulo:-(

There starting lineup is looking stacked again. Only issue they have is Gonzalez being out with his ACL tear. Which may benefit the Sounders because he just destroyed our forwards when we tried to bypass their midfield with long balls previously.

If the Sounders can move the ball through midfield won't be as much of an issue, but they will still be looking for those crosses from the outside. So nice to not have Gonzalez there clearing anything coming in through the air.
---------
Timbers young DP signing has a serious knee injury that will put him out for awhile. But they were able to change the deal with his former team so its now a loan. I assume he will now be on a "developmental" contract for league minimum and thus not count against the salary cap. His roster spot can be replaced since he will be on the disabled list. If his salary wasn't adjusted it would have still counted against the cap. So, good for them to be able to work that out. Hopefully he makes a full recovery.

Buddle, Keane, Donovan, Beckham, Juninho, DeLaGarza... Some people are wondering if LA will have a "SuperClub." Keane has three goals for Aston Villa already in the English Premier League, Landon has served three assists for Everton... Seattle, Portland, Colorado and Salt Lake are all stronger this year. Meanwhile, I don't think any eastern teams have improved. Henry has two goals for Arsenal, including a game-winner in the Carling Cup playoffs.

With Tim Ream going to Bolton, along with the above, it's interesting how the PL is looking more and more to MLS for talent.

Two Houston Dynamo players arrested after an altercation with police at a night club.

It is he said she said but from what I understand some players were refused entrance into the club and that is where things went downhill.

According to the Dynamo players it was because those who were refused entrance were black. The club had an incident a few nights prior to that that sounds eerily similar involving a rap group.

Some strong words are being thrown about by lawyers and spokespeople for the parties involved. If you are interested on keeping up on the story I suggest you read this thread over on BigSoccer. http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1895728

Hey, asoc, and anyone else that wants to chime in... what do you think about the Cascadia Cup this year? With the unbalanced schedule and home advantage going to Portland, I can understand why Vancouver and Seattle fans would be upset. We're not happy about it from a rivalry standpoint either. Wish the league would consider the rivalries in their scheduling.
Getting really anxious for the season to start. Following the PDX/LA preseason game the other day on twitter of all things was aggravating, and it doesn't even matter. Reminded me of when I had to get text updates on the famous GU/AZ matchup in the tournament while I was at work.

ECS leadership pushed for counting all games btw. I am fine with that personally.

MLS schedule makers could have made it so each team gets 3 home games and 3 away within Cascadia each year. I honestly don't think they thought of it. But too late to change that now I guess.

Obviously it sucks MLS couldn't work that out.
Good news, only 2 years of this (Next year will be the reverse schedule). Schedule will be up for adjustments again for the 2014 season.

BTW, my understanding is that the Portland @ Seattle game will have all of C-Link opened. Probably part of a 3 game package like they did with the friendly, NYRB and SJE/Kellers last game set up.

Sounders also moved their home game with RSL from July to October. Suspecting that is clearing space for the in season friendly. People aren't happy with that as it puts more congestion into that final month of the season.

Not much to say about Portland's cuts, but a lot of us are excited about signing Songo'o today. He performed very well in preseason down in Cali.

I went to the USWNT game in Portland last summer - it was a lot of fun, especially so fresh off their performance in the world cup. Fucito was/is a cult hero. But the reality is that he isn't really a starter in MLS, at least on one of the best teams in the league.

Neagle, while a promising player out of Federal Way, is depth. No way he was beating out Fernandez on the left. With Zakuani coming back he was going to be 3rd string.

Sivabaek is getting high praise from the coaches and can play anywhere in midfield.

Eddie Johnson can hold the ball up well and should do well in Seattle's possession styled game.

Fernandez, Osvaldo, Evans, Rosales.

Apparently Sivabaek has been impressing quite a bit. He could be played out left and Fernandez could come inside. But against Santos I am sure Sigi will go with what is more familiar.

Starting lineup against Santos Laguna will likely be as follows

Ochoa - Montero
Fernandez - Alonso - Evans - Rosales
Gonzalez - Hurtado - Parke - Johansson

First two subs will likely be EJ coming on for Ochoa and Sivebaek for Fernandez or Rosales.

This looks stronger and more talented than previous Sounders lineups, to me. When and where does Zakuani fit in? I gather he is fully healed, or close to it? Anyway, this looks pretty good. Stick Gspurning in goal and it looks like a contender.

Really not sure how long it will take Zakuani to be back.

He would fit in on the left. But Fernandez could be hard to replace out there. He will have to earn that spot back.

He isn't fully back from his injury though. I think all the healing is done, it is just building his leg back up that is happening now. At the start of preseason they were doing one day on one day off sort of approach for him. He would go for around 30 minutes in the scrimmages or until his leg started hurting then he would stop. Not sure he has all the feeling back in his foot either. So he is learning how to play with the permanent changes to his leg and foot. But things look good for him from my understanding.

Fernandez could move into the middle.

I could see the Sounders selling Fernandez this Summer or in the next off season. If Zakuani is fully back and the FO has faith in him then they will need to get rid of one of them imo.

When EJ is ready I expect him to win out over Ochoa.

This would seem to be the prudent direction and rumors suggest Flaco is looking toward Europe.

Prior to the injury, there's some of us Sounder fans who speculated trying Steve up top as a forward, the position he played at Akron.

In that situation you could have a forward line of EJ & Zakuani, push Montero into CAM (where I think he'd be dynamite and could overlap Rosales), cover the Montero / Rosales combo with Alonzo, with Flaco primarily staying on the left flank. I personally would love to see what that lineup could do.

It would look something like this.

-------------Zakuani--------Johnson--------------
--------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------Rosales
------------------------Montero------------------
--------Flaco-------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------
----------------------------Alonso----------------
--------------------------------------------------
Burch / Leo-----------------------------Johansson
--------------Hurtado-------Parke----------------

I think it could suit the Sounders. You could also push Flaco into Zakuani's spot, and replace him with Evans who can play a more conservative holding position.

This is inspired by the aggressive tactics used by FC Nantes teams in the late 70s and 80s, even into the 90s, who historically were a great attacking side and went on an amazing run akin to Mourinho's Chelsea squad and some of what I currently see Alex Ferguson working on at ManU and Barcelona using in springing free Mesi.

But will have to wait and see who plays in the friendly against Jaguares.

Regarding Montero as a CAM. I think it pulls Montero too far back. And Sigi likes to play two CMs that are more box to box, even if Alonso is more defensive and his partner more offensive.

I don't see Montero as a CAM. He's a pure forward and poaches shots a lot. Kinda reminds me of Kenwanye Jones or Darren Bent in England. I want EJ on top, not sure about Estrada. Eager to get this season going!

xjzico
02-24-2012, 01:07 PM
Maybe more of a false 9, or withdrawn forward, than CAM. I just think he is dynamite when allowed to roam freely and the team operates with a lot of movement. I also think he's actually inhibited when paired with a proper target forward. With the above formation, the Sounders would in essence play with three forwards and push high up the pitch to defend. I wish I could of drawn some arrows to indicate their movement and coverage.

As far as Estrada, I never agreed with some that he was garbage and a waste of a pick, but I never thought he'd make his push into the lineup at forward. Just last year there was talk of him moving to right back!

asoc

I think Sigi allows Montero to roam and find the game.

EJ is good with the ball at his feet. He isn't going to just be that big target forward that holds the ball up.

If you can, find the clip on youtube of EJ and Adu in a game for Aris. EJ moves around quite a bit in their possession based style.

I imagine our attack is going to be pretty dynamic with a bunch of moving parts.

Sigi does let Montero roam and the attack was dynamic until Rosales was injured. I think they lost a little something in Neagle in that regards and hope EJ brings something a little different to compensate. My thoughts are to force the situation further and see what happens with Montero +2 and turn things up to 11.

One source of my concern is I remember last year the Sounders were worried about playing Rosales and Montero at the same time - until they were forced to with Zak's injury. After that, it got beautiful. But their hand had to be forced.

Chelsea. Again.
These games are just about the money, right?

Would almost rather see a mid-tier or newly promoted Premier League team so both teams could field reserves for a good portion of the match and not feel too badly about the result. But there's no gate in that.

And so far only 16,500 for the Champions League match, since I'm talking gates. Really disappointed the importance of this tournament hasn't sunk in.

Money of course, but there is also a pretty strong relationship being developed between Chelsea and the Sounders (Seahawks too, true story). They have brought multiple staff members over to Seattle the past couple years.

As for Santos, I expect the walkup crowd to be healthy, lots of Mexican fans I'd imagine.

I am ticked off the Sounders FO hasn't been pushing this CCL game the whole off season.

Trophies not Friendlies.

I get it that the big friendly can bring in fans from all over the region, which is kind of cool.

And they will likely offer the tickets as part of a 3 game package again before they sell single game tickets.

So there are positives.

But in order to make room for the friendly they moved a game in July to October where we are playing CCL games. They are needlessly congesting the important part of the season just to get a friendly in during the Summer.

Keep in mind that with the new schedule we are basically playing all our important conference games in the 2nd half of the season as well. So they are quite possibly effecting not just the CCL group stage but our playoff chances/seeding as well.

Yeah, I know the team gets it.

But as a Supporter I firmly believe in the effect atmosphere has on the players. The FO should have been pushing the game all off season not to make more money from tickets, but because the more butts in the seats the more electric the atmosphere would be, especially if they market it right. The better the atmosphere and the more voices pushing the team on to victory the better our chances become.

Toronto is going to have 50k against the Galaxy that same night. That place is going to be rocking.

Don't get me wrong, the ECS is going to do our part. But it would be nice to have as many fans packed in for that game as possible.

So Sounders fans, what's your feeling on the match tonight?

My feeling is it ends at 1-1 or 2-1 Sounders. It's just too early in the year and the new faces have not been fully integrated for them to really do the deed and demonstrate the sharpness and discipline to not concede a goal. Combine that with their open style I don't see Santos not getting at least an away goal out of it. I think they're going to have to prove it by scoring goals in Mexico to advance.

I am loathe to say it but I really like some of the Timbers players. Along with the aforementioned Alhassan, I think Nagbe is very intriguing and have heard really good things about Songo'o. The Portland attack has huge potential.

Hah, I think Zach has always been a bad ass. He has kept improving as a player every year. At one point he was just an average USL player. Was the last player to make the MLS roster in 2009. Kept improving. Now he is starting games frequently enough and shutting down the likes of Brek Shea and other players teams line up against him.

He doesn't do much offensively during the run of play, but that's not his role and he knows it.

xjzico
05-04-2012, 07:43 AM
Okay, he's become a bad a** for a MLS player.

I expect a tight game from Phily. They haven't really hemorrhaged goals this year outside of the Timbers game. After their Chivas win and close game with San Jose, there's some belief in the Union that they can get the result. Overall the Union are 2-1-1 against the Sounders.

I feel a 1-1 draw is in the cards. Sounders play from behind and Montero draws them even as the offense continues to work out the kinks. Of course I hope for more and love being proven wrong on such pessimistic prognostications.:)

Interesting lineup with Caskey and Rose starting again. Montero started on the bench and came in at halftime for Rosales.

Rosales hit one off the post in the first half and Montero scored both goals in the 2nd.

A quarter of the way into the season, and the Sounders have around half the points they would need to safely secure a playoff spot. A win against RSL would put them at 25. To put this in perspective, in 2009 & 2010 teams have won the league with around 50.

But while it looked nice and holds a cozy 22,000+ (roughly same as White Hart Lane, Loftus Road, Craven's Cottage, among a few other BPL venues), I didn't think it was special in any way. I missed the halftime walk-through they showed so maybe I'm wrong, but it struck me as rather normal. Livestrong (same size) looks a bit nicer, imo.

Thing I dislike about BBVA Compass stadium is that the sections closest to the field are so small. They aren't very deep.

If I had a dream stadium in Seattle for the Sounders. It would have very steep sections right on top of the field. The whole of the South end from corner to corner would be safe standing terraces. And a roof that covers all the stands. And real grass... It would be minimum 45k seating. But since its a dream stadium, it would seat 80k!!! and be packed every game, lmfao. And I like the location of C-Link right now. So it would be in that area of the city as well. Would be cool to put it on the waterfront.

Jury is still out on Drogs leaving or staying. Playing soccer in China, you might as well play on Mars, MLS gets more exposure, but maybe $$ is bigger. I want to trade Torres, keep Drogs and bring in a striker like Falcao or Cavani. I am not a Torres fan. I guess we'll see soon enough. If Drogs leaves, he'll sure go out on a high note, ala John Elway.

Good to see Timbers get off the shnide. Looking forward to next machday. With Europe done, I'm starving for soccer. Euro 2012s and, to a lesser degree, the Olympics can't come fast enough!

I would clean house of both Drogba and Torres if your landing Cavani were a real possibility.

My opinion is we haven't seen just what Romelu Lukaku can do at Chelsea. If he's the real deal they might not need to make a huge signing up front and instead should search for a cheaper, complimentary striker. To me Chelsea's main concerns might be to focus on improving the midfield and replacing Bosingwa and Terry.

edit: I'll be surprised if Eden Hazard is not the big name signing for Chelsea. Which makes me wonder, would they sign both Hazard and Falcao? Certainly Man City will have a say in this, bit still...

Kalou and Boswinga are out. I think Lukaku will go out on loan, the word now is to Everton. I want Hazard and Falcao. Bad. CFC has some nice parts like Kevin De Bruyne and Marko Marin to help midfield. Really need a RB. I'm afraid Torres will stay, they keep HOPING he'll return to form and I don't buy it, I'd never hinge a season on mere Hope. So I gotta hope Falcao comes.

Look for more departures. Roman is really in the mood to spend to rebuild a younger team after the CL win and Drogs exit.

EXCITING night of USOC games.

MLS may look bad, but I don't care, lol.

In the 3rd round 7 MLS teams lost to lower division teams.
Both Portland and Seattle host games Wednesday night. You can watch them both online for free at their respective team sites.

Galaxy, RSL, Chicago, Columbus, Dallas, Houston and New England all lost.

The craziest ending was New England and Harrisburg City Islanders going into two 15 minute extra time periods tied 0-0 after 90 minutes. New England goes up 3-0 only to have Harrisburg tie it up before time ran out. Harrisburg won the penalty shoot out.

The minute each goal was scored.
94 NE
99 NE
103 NE
111 HC
117 HC
120 HC

Chicago lost to a PDL team... yes, a PDL team.

RSL paid to their opponent who had won the draw so that they could host the game and still lost.

Seattle did the same, hopefully we win:-)
Portland was actually the first team to attempt to pay their opponent for hosting rights, but the team lost in the 2nd round and Portland had won the draw for hosting rights over the other team.

If both Portland and Seattle win, then they play each other down in Portland.

Cal FC didn't play bad in the first half. But after the first goal in the 2nd half they had to change up their strategy and be more aggressive. The second goal came, and the flood gates opened.

Sounders move on to play the San Jose Earthquakes on June 26th or the 27th at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco.

Seattle is trying to get the game moved to that Wednesday. But San Jose has to agree to the move and they aren't.

Seattle plays on Sunday in Portland.

Kind of a ####ed up situation.

USSF knows about it and are looking at potential solutions, but the rules clearly state the game can only be moved to Wednesday if both teams agree. San Jose has every right to say no and I am not sure it would be fair to change the rules. Granted, they basically did just that with allowing teams to buy the hosting rights from teams. Although the rules never prohibited that. I doubt USSF meant for that to happen but caved when the Timbers came to them with the idea.

The silver lining might be that the game is in San Francisco at Kezar Stadium and not San Jose. Is there a large Earthquake contingent in the Bay Area? I don' know. Will people make the trip up from San Jose on a Tuesday night for an Open Cup game?

Being a good road team in a dead stadium might no be so bad. Surely Starfire would be better, but so it goes. We owe San Jose anyway.

I am more disappointed that I am just unable to squeeze that flight into my schedule.

edit: San Jose also have some fixture congestion with 5 games in 14 days , with the four MLS games against Western Conference foes (A[Col], A[RSL], H[Sounders@Kezar], H[LA@Stanford], A[Port]).

Not sure ESPN showed it very well.

Montero pushed the Timbers player(Jewsbury?) off the ball. Looked like a bit of acting thrown in as well. But there was definitely a push.

#### hit the fan. Palmer jumped in with a weak elbow to the back of Eddie Johnson's head/neck I think it was. From what I saw on tv, I thought that 2nd red came a little late. I had thought the ref was done sorting the mess out when he pulled it out.

Not sure Montero's push was worthy of a direct red card. I get that he should have been on a yellow card at that point. But the ref never carded him to that point and just pushing someone isn't typically cause for a straight red, I wouldn't dare attempt to appeal it though, lol. Palmer deserved the red for the elbow.

I think for sure the ref did a horrible job managing that game and a lot of that could have been avoided if he did a better job.

Well done to Portland. They jumped on Seattle early and often. Terrific atmosphere. Easily the best true rivalry in all MLS, it isn't even close. Seattle is out of sorts lately, really in need of some sort of a win or it could all fall apart. Seven matches w/o a win. Ugh.

What a great day of soccer yesterday.

I couldn't agree more on the atmosphere... The "Jay Dub" was the loudest I have heard it of the games I have been to... Kudos to the Timbers Army, they were on fire all day (I love the direct references & "suggestions" to the Sounders fans in the corner). The stadium as overflowing with emotion, leading to a much-needed win for the Green & Gold.

The tifo was a classic, paying homage to the legendary Timber and UP Coach, Clive Charles.

My throat is sore, my ears were still ringing in bed last night, but what a great day... RCTID!

Totally agree. It was rightfully a physical, chippy game, but the ref let it escalate and never really took control. The non-calls both ways allowed it to get to the point that it did. Pretty frustrating. Never like to see 18-20 players involved in that kind of scrape. I was OK with who was left on the pitch when it was over, though. ;)

Sounders beat the Earthquakes tonight 1-0 down at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco.

Sounders advance in the USOC to now face Chivas USA in the Semifinals. They play on July 10th at "home" in Tukwilla.

Was a very chippy game.

Sounders were playing on 1 days rest, Earthquakes on 2 days rest. Both teams fielding a mixed lineup.

I couldn't really watch it, the online stream the EQs put up was horrible. So mostly listened to it on the radio.

Yeah, from what I can tell, the SJ player walks up to Eddie and says something, then pushes EJ.

EJ instantly pushes back and the guy goes down like a sack of bricks.

Definitely doesn't look like a closed fist.

I don't think contact was above the shoulder, but maybe his hand slipped up as he pushed back.

The SJ player was covering his own butt in the post game comments imo. He acted as if he walked up to EJ and just told him to go celebrate elsewhere and EJ punched him in the face out of nowhere.

Regardless I think it reflects pretty poorly on the Sounders. It seems just another in a list of incidents telling me this team does not have it. Maybe they can turn it around? As a hardcore fan I am unexcited by their play, disgusted with their behavior and lack of professionalism, and really disappointed is my fellow fans. The "Sounders reject" chant directed at Mike Fucito on the weekend was pathetic. Maybe the pressure on the team is filtering to the fans. The fact we're excited about a near brawl in Golden Gate Park speaks volumes about how far things have turned for the worse.

I still have hope in Starfire though.

I think people are over reacting.

We played perhaps the most physical team in the league in SKC where the ref was letting a lot go.

Then we played our biggest rivals in Portland. That was going to get physical and testy regardless.

And then another very physical team in San Jose on a small field where all the odds were against us.

Oh, forgot about the game in Chicago where a Fire player cleaned out one of our players right at the end of the game. Guy got red carded for it too, so being upset wasn't unjustified.

But those other three games, when looking at each one in a vacuum, no one would be surprised each game turned out the way it did. They just happened to all take place within a week of each other.

Timbers fire Spencer.

Not a huge surprise, as clearly something had to be done. There was a systemic issue with the team, offensively and when on the road... even the player comments after the losses @Colorado and @RSL were odd. The loss in the USOC may have been the most damaging. Owner Merritt Paulson stated that the move was over the "long term fit", not any one specific action/game.

I will miss Spencer's personality... too bad it didn't work out (his Alaska Airlines ad still makes me laugh). GM Gavin Wilkinson will take over on an interim basis while a new coach is found. I do like the aggressiveness that the ownership is taking here, though...

The Sounders gave it a hurculean effort, but that was game #3 in 6 days and it was just too much. They were dead tired by the time extra time rolled around, no clue how they made it through the extra 30 mins. Too bad for the loss, especially considering KC couldn't score without the ref - they scored no non-PK goals - and the ref was horribly biased. Some sloppy defending on both ends but at least the Sounders were finishing their chances.

San Jose won tonight:-(

Portland beats Vancouver 2-1.

DC Losing and Houston tying is good for the Sounders. The higher Seattle finishes in the overall standings the more likely it is for us to get a CCL spot if we can outright earn a spot ourselves by getting to MLS Cup.

If a team earns multiple berths the spots get handed down to the next best team in the MLS standings. So if SKC wins the SS, gets to MLS Cup, or both, then spots get handed down. If SJ wins the SS and advances to MLS Cup then a spot gets handed down.

I think Seattle will end up 2nd in the West. I suspect it will be RSL who is 3rd. I think we can beat them in the playoffs this time around. I would expect SJ to beat whoever they face.

Some good action tonight.

Timbers tied the Earthquakes in a very chippy and entertaining game. Oregon State alumni Danny Mwanga scored two goals to put the Timbers up 2-0 but San Jose do as they always do and came back to tie it with two goals from Wondolowski who is leading the golden boot race with 21 goals now. The last goal coming in stoppage time.

Timbers nearly had a game winner on a break but the shot went just wide and then the ref blew the whistle for full time.

Sounders beat Marathon of Honduras tonight 3-2. Wasn't the greatest game from the Sounders and they started mostly reserves.

But the win means they have won their group in CCL play with one game left to play in the group stages.

Their final game in CCL play is October 24th in Seattle against Marathon. Both teams will likely just send out their reserves. Seattle should win.

San Jose dropping points tonight gives the teams chasing them in the Supporters Shield race some hope.

I have a lot of words I would like to share, but this is technically a family friendly board. Wilkinson has completely lost his mind. I cannot comprehend why Paulson defends him and his choices. Last night's game was so important for all of the supporters, and he decided to change things up and basically make a couple players audition for next season, then throws players under the bus, AGAIN. Unbelievable. Giant middle finger to all of us, including the players themselves, IMO.

I hope we beat Vancouver in their house again. I've got my reunion in Spokane that weekend, but a lot of my friends are making the trip.

asoc
10-08-2012, 11:22 PM
I think having a wacky outspoken owner can be fine.
I think the main problem with Paulson is that he is relatively new to Soccer. Correct me if I am wrong. I don't think he had a Soccer background prior to buying the Timbers and that purchase was part of the deal of him acquiring the Portland Beavers with the ultimate goal of getting a MLB team to Portland.

So Paulson became attached to Wilkinson who likely is the one who guided him through the learning process.

I think Caleb Porter will be a good coach. Will have to see how he does on the player management side of things. Going from dealing with College players to dealing with the egos, personalities and diverse backgrounds in a Professional league is a big step.

He will probably excel with his younger players. Its just the older more experienced guys I am concerned with.

Speaking of Caleb Porter going to Portland.

I wonder if that changes how DeAndre Yedlin is feeling about Akron and if the Sounders would be willing to sign him to a Home Grown contract after his current College season.

Correct, correct, correct. And I understand loyalty, but we're past the loyalty stage and in to poor decision making.

lol, one day Bob, one day...
CLink isn't exactly conducive to a single banner that large though.

Poor Canada though, losing 8-1 to Honduras.

Sounders player Mario Martinez had two goals and an assist though for Honduras.

And honestly, not sure how he is fitting into Seattle. He hasn't gotten much playing time when around. Heard some rumors that maybe he didn't even want to come here to begin with. I don't know.

I am intrigued by the guy and want to see him have a true shot in our starting lineup. Although with the season almost over I doubt he gets it at this point.

Honduras packs their stadium and the fans go crazy, making their players play out of their minds. That will be a tough game for every team down there.

Glad Jamaica went through. I'd rather play there than at Guatemala. All USA needs to do is finish 3rd. They can finish 4th but would have to playoff with a team from Asia, I think. I expect Mexico to win CONCACAF. USA to battle for 2nd.

Bring on the Hex.

Seattle at RSL tonight on NBC Sports.

Missed the first 35 minutes because the schedule said NBC Sports but it was actually on Root NW. Grrr.

A valiant defensive effort by Seattle to hold RSL scoreless while being a man down. Had some legit chances to grab a goal but not quite. Gspurning played very well. 0-0. Got a point. Three points above LA (4th), three points below RSL (2nd).

Two games to go till playoffs. Stay in top-3, Sounders.

Portland wins the Cascadia Cup with a 1-0 win in Vancouver today. Congrats to the Timbers, it's a nice way to build momentum for Caleb Porter next year. Kudos!

Seattle kicking off vs Dallas now. A win by Sounders puts LA in 4th since LA drew with SJ. Seattle would be 3rd or 2nd. Vancouver gets into playoffs with Seattle win or draw, as well.
