Ontario Basketball is pleased to announce Kevin Pangos (Newmarket) and Natalie Achonwa (Guelph) as the recipients of the 2011 Ontario Baller of the Year Award.

As part of Ontario Basketball’s organizational priorities with emphasis on recognition, the Baller of the Year Award will be presented annually to the male and female athlete who garners the most votes in an online poll as the top basketball player from Ontario. The award coincides with the Ontario Basketball Awards Gala on November 19, 2011 at the Holiday Inn Yorkdale in Toronto.

This year, there were 10 male and 10 female athletes considered for the award. Candidates included two first round NBA draft picks (Tristan Thompson and Cory Joseph), a Big Ten Player of the Year (Kalisha Keane), Canadian University champions (Tyson Hinz and Jessica Clemencon), as well as many members of Canada’s national teams.

“As the provincial governing body of basketball in Ontario, it was important for us to not only recognize the achievements of athletes, coaches and volunteers under the OBA structure, but also those great ambassadors who represent Ontario everywhere,” said Michael T. Cvitkovic, executive director, Ontario Basketball. “Congratulations to Kevin and Natalie for being voted as Baller of the Year by your fans.”

After 12 days and nearly 8 000 total votes from all over the world, including hundreds from Europe, South America and the United States, the public determined that Achonwa and Pangos are the inaugural winners of the Baller of the Year Award.November 19th the Zags will be playing Hawaii in Vancouver, so doubtful that Kevin will make the awards banquet.
