View Full Version : Core non-league schedule appears to be complete

07-03-2007, 08:48 AM
1. Great Alaska Shootout Game 1
2. Great Alaska Shootout Game 2
3. Great Alaska Shootout Game 3
4. Tennessee (Seattle)
5. Georgia (Spokane Arena)
6. Wazzu
7. Utah
8. UAB
9. At St. Joe’s
10. At UConn (Boston)
11. At Memphis
12. At Oklahoma State

It is still unclear to me whether contracts have been signed yet for UAB and Oklahoma State, or that matter, Tennessee. The KHQ report indicated that the BiS matchup between the Zags/Vols was still being finalized. As we know, this event has a long history of teams pulling out at the last second.....although I have a feeling the Vols won't do this.

Anyway, one would have to believe that the rest of the non-league schedule will be filled out with K2 games against Big Sky schools and such (Montana, Portland State, etc.), with one of those games taking place after finals week in December. The Zags are set to play 8 non-league games away from Spokane. Gonzaga will be facing 3 preseason top 10 teams, plus 3-5 other BCS schools, and a couple of solid programs outside of the big money conferences.

That's a wrap....I doubt you'll see Gonzaga taking on any more heavy hitters, and certainly no more road games.

That is a really great schedule. There is one thing that is painfully clear though, there really isn't anyone in the west that wants to play GU. That has to make it tough to create the top tier OOC schedule while trying to balance travel. That has to be frustrating for the staff.

It is a shame that Oregon, Arizona, USC - and other PAC-10 teams - don't want to play.

Has the UConn game in Boston been finalized as far as the date is concerned? Last I heard it was going to be early December (7th maybe?). I would love for it to be a few weeks later so I could go.

I love this schedule

I wouldnt mind traveling so much if I got to fly in a gulf stream

Add Idaho, Montana, PSU and a UTSA type team (all in K2) and we don't need anymore. That's more than enough.

Traveling has suddenly become three times less tiring with that new jet.

Of the players recently drafted by the NBA, how many did the Zags face last year?

Almond, Stuckey, Wright, Durant...who else?

Singletary will probably be drafted...count him?

What I'm getting at is, who are the top players (likely NBA) the Zags face this year?

Anyone care to start the list?

Derrick Rose (memphis) is a lock for the nba lottery next year. nbadraft.net has him as the #1 pick in next year's draft.

No EWU this year? I knew the Zags wanted to ended the game at the Arena, but I was hoping the two teams would play at K2. IMO, rivalry games with WSU, Idaho, and EWU should be played yearly. I know there are those who disagree -- mainly the younger fans -- but I think it's important to remember (and honor) your roots.

I think the measuring stick with EWU and Idaho is who wants to continue the series - if Eastern wants to drop a game they will in all probability loose, fine. But I wouldn't want GU to drop it, especially since we need a few "milk-runs" in the schedule (Eastern hasn't always been a milk-run, but of late it has). Why bring in a UTSA-type team when Eastern is right there? It just doesn't make sense. As for Idaho... I'd feel the same if their RPI wasn't hovering around 300 and will probably stay there for the forseeable future. But I'm sure we'll play them anyway. *sigh* At least I hope we can make them the finals week game.

WSU should always be on the schedule. Even if Bennett left, say, and they stopped being so good (or if they have to rebuild for a year or two after loosing seniors), they're a PAC-10 team that's relatively local. As it is, with their ranking, that's even more incentive.

Anybody know?

Chris Lofton at Tennessee is a likely first team All American. He'll probably be the best shooter GU faces all season. nbadraft.net has him going at #41 in the 2008 draft.

Some others (besides Rose):

Hasheem Thabeet, UConn - #11, nbadraft.net, 2008
Kyle Weaver, Wazzu - #38, nbadraft.net, 2008
Joey Dorsey, Memphis - #39, nbadraft.net, 2008
Stanley Robinson, UConn - #10, nbadraft.net, 2009
Robert Dozier, Memphis - #32, nbadraft.net, 2009
Chris Douglas-Roberts, Memphis - #37, nbadraft.net, 2009
AJ Price, UConn - #43, nbadraft.net, 2009
Robert Vaden, UAB - #48, nbadraft.net, 2009
Antonio Anderson, Memphis - #50, nbadraft.net, 2009
Mike Mercer, UGA - #53, nbadraft.net, 2009

Also, from a college standpoint, Derrick Low at Wazzu has to be regarded as one of the better PG's in the country.

Anybody know?Probably October....late October. ;)

'til then, a piece here, another there. Here's an attempt to put a few games and dates together (please correct/add where needed!)

Great Alaska Shootout, opponents TBA:
Gm.1 Wed Nov.21 or Thu Nov.22
Gm.2 Fri Nov.23
Gm.3 Sat Nov.24

Thu Nov.29: St.Joe's (Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse)
Sat Dec.1: UConn (Boston)

Sat Dec.29: Tennessee (Seattle)

Sat Jan.5: Georgia (Spokane Arena)

Sat Jan.19: Memphis (FedEx Forum)

Can't remember if the St.Joe's date was mentioned. Got it from a mod on their board (http://xsorbit31.com/users5/hawkforum/index.php?topic=617.30) . Man, a game in The Palestra would've been awesome!!. But after last season, gotta believe the 2-in-1 east-coast swing takes priority (even with a new bird :) )

Thanks for the list of opposing stars CDC. Gives me an idea of who to look for. I'm a little more educated when talking to opposing fans.

I only speculate, but all the GU coaches (especially Giacoletti [sp?]) are pretty tight with Mike Burns & expressed that they weren't too fond of the way he was fired. Remember, they screwed Jerry Krause years ago too.
A future game way well depend on who Eastern eventually hires as "permanent" AD & how well he mends things.

for the schedule information. Man-oh-man, 120 days to go -- pure torture. Any more 17 to 3 blowouts by the Mariners and my "interim mind diversion" won't be worth be worth crap. 120 days to go.
