    More Than a Few...Article

    Article from aeryssports.com...

I don't recognize a couple of names. Anyone shed some light on my ignorance?

I have tremendous respect for what Mark Few has done with the Gonzaga men’s basketball program in the past decade, but sometimes I have to question what is going on insides of the program. As news broke Saturday afternoon that junior college transfer Guy Landry was committing to Gonzaga for the 2011-2012 season, I started to count how many guys were going to be on the roster potentially.

At this point, supposedly five incoming freshmen are coming to play basketball at GU. Then add Landry and you’ve got six new guys on a team that only lost one player to graduation, and one more that is transferring. Not to mention there are three guys that red-shirted for the Zags last season.

Here is the list of presumed returners and recruits.

    Rob Sacre-Senior
    Demetri Goodson-Senior
    Marquise Carter-Senior
    Mike Hart- RS Junior
    Kelly Olynyk-Junior
    Elias Harris-Junior
    Guy Landry – Junior (Transfer)
    Sam Dower-RS Sophomore
    David Stockton- RS Sophomore
    Mathis Monninghoff- Sophomore
    Mathis Keita-Sophomore
    Madu Cole-RS Freshman
    Tommy Joyce-RS Freshman

    Matt Goode-RS Freshman
    Gary Bell Jr.- Freshman
    Kyle Dranginis-Freshman
    Kyle Spangler-Freshman
    Kevin Pangos-Freshman
    Chris Sarbaugh-Freshman

We have a larger than usually group that has tuition waivers due to their parents or being here for other reasons and walking on - Stockton, Hart, Sarb., Goode. Add to that another probable three redshirts and it equals out fine as long as the players themselves have a realistic view of probable playing time.

The unknowns are weird but its probably another article by someone who has never actually seen a GU game so their facts can suck.

Even more interesting is that Madu Cole, is listed on Max Preps as being

5'12" tall. Is he trying to qualify for an under 6-foot league?

Joyce and Cole are two walk-ons/practice players. They have been sitting with Goode at games all season, and practicing with the team.

          ...or not.

I always wondered who some of the kids were that would just be hanging around @ games. At the Memphis game I sat by GU bench and three college-age, taller, kids were dressed nicely and sat at the far end of the bench. Was thinking recruits, but maybe just practice kids?

Here is a nice article on Tommy Joyce, and how proud he was making the practice squad.

The author doesn't understand the landscape of men's college hoops, and obviously doesn't read this board enough! Not to say some of his worries aren't legit.
