The Gonzaga University women's basketball team improved on its West Coast Conference leading record with a 79-68 victory over Santa Clara University Saturday evening. Freshman Heather Bowman and Stephanie Hawk propelled the Bulldogs to victory combining for 50 of the Zags points.

With the win, Gonzaga improved its WCC record to 10-1 and are now 18-9 overall. Santa Clara dropped to 13-12 overall and 5-5 in conference.

Bowman finished with 28 points and 15 rebounds, both game-highs, for her second-straight double-double. The Spokane, Wash., native sank 11-of-15 shots from the field and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line.

Hawk chipped in 22 points, along with nine rebounds, three assists, two blocks and one steal. Junior Rachel Kane drained four three-pointers and finished with a career-high 14 points. Kane also dished out six assists and grabbed three rebounds.

It was Bowman and Hawk who helped the Bulldogs to a 41-33 halftime lead. Bowman finished the first half with a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Hawk had 10 points and three rebounds. Gonzaga shot a sizzling 51.7 percent (15-29) from the floor, including 42.9 percent (3-7) from beyond the three-point arc, and was nearly perfect from the charity stripe, hitting 80.0 percent (8-10).

The Broncos sliced the Zags lead to four early in the second half but an 18-6 run by Gonzaga, capped off on a three-pointer by junior Michelle Elliott, gave GU a large 63-47 advantage.

Gonzaga pushed its lead to 20; it's largest of the game, at 72-52 at the 2:59 mark after Hawk hit a jumper.

The Bulldogs closed out the game shooting 54.5 percent (30-55) from the floor; their best shooting night of the season. Gonzaga also held a huge 43-28 rebound advantage.

Santa Clara was led by Chandice Cronk and Tracey Walker who scored 21 and 20 points, respectively.

Gonzaga will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 17 when it plays at the University of Portland; its last regular-season road game. Game time is slated for 2 p.m.

This team seems to play their best while on the road. I saw the first match between these 2 teams and either the Zags or Santa Clara must play very much better on the road.
