John Blanchette's Column (http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2011/mar/26/bekkering-steps-when-gonzaga-needs-new-star/)

For a few minutes there, throats couldn’t have been tighter if a drill sergeant with a toothbrush and latrines in need of a scrub had asked for volunteers. A 20-point lead had melted like hearts at a puppy sale. But then a drive, a steal, a foul drawn and some free throws made, and order was restored.

Well, not exactly order. Order would have required pretty much the exclusive involvement of Courtney Vandersloot, America’s sweetheart.

Instead … Janelle Bekkering?

Yes. Janelle Bekkering.

ESPN Game Story (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncw/recap?gameId=310850097)

Playing less than two miles from their campus, the Bulldogs (31-4) sent the blood pressure rising for the 10,000 or so hometown fans in attendance after nearly squandering all of a 20-point second half lead. Along the way, they became the lowest seed to ever reach a regional final and get a chance Monday night to become the first school from outside the six major conferences to reach the Final Four in a decade.

"It hasn't really hit us yet," Vandersloot said. "We're excited about the win and I think that we're still celebrating, but pretty soon we'll focus on our next game ahead of us and then we'll realize how close we are."

While the quality of play in the Men's game has arguably taken a dip with the early pro departures, the women are getting better every year.

I am amazed at how much better today's players are compared to when I was in HS or college.

There's video of Schimmel & Reid linked to this story

Regarding Reid's groin injury ( suffered during warm-ups ), Coach Walz offered up this nugget:

“I tell everybody that warmups are great,” Walz said, “but for any of you that have dogs, I have yet to see a dog stretch before it chases a damn car. I don’t know why we have to stretch so much. I mean, that dog just takes off sprinting and he seems to be OK.”

Regarding Reid's groin injury ( suffered during warm-ups ), Coach Walz offered up this nugget:

that coach seemed like a real cracker bonehead during the game.

he got a well-deserved T and easily could have gotten another. he was in the ear of the refs DURING the ongoing play in front of both teams trying to concdentrate on the game several times, and spent more time on floor than CV, yelling and screaming incessantly.

That said, I thought it was brilliant of this same goober to hammer the ball right at standish for at least 10 straight point as she had four fouls and pretty much had to present a soft defensive attempt, or foul out.

I watched his presser @ the NCAA web site after the game. Fellah has a very wry sense of humor, self-depracating outlook. . .he has a slight stuttering problem.
As he said, however:

" I stutter a bit. Except when I cuss. You can't stutter if you cuss. You ever see the 'The King's Speech?' You can't stutter when you cuss."

He seemed like the genuine article ( as compared to phony balonies like Pearl )
