Gonzaga at #15 in Andy Katz Rankings (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=2908108)

And shopping for more pre-season rankings ...SportProjections.com (http://www.sportprojections.com/ncaa_college_basketball.html)

And, people, people, people! Who's watching CBSSportsline.com for Gary Parrish 's Top 25 (http://www.sportsline.com/collegebasketball/story/10229862)? Came out yesterday. You're going to have to pay better attention to this, or we're going to have to padlock your browsers.

All these guys are betting on Josh making the difference between great and so-so. Whatcha think?

Excellent, but I still don't really put much merit in these.

"Mark Few always has his team ready to compete no matter what happens. That is the reason they are in the top 20. However, if Heytvelt can't play this year they fall out of the rankings."

I don't know, I think Gonzaga could still be a Top 25 team even without Heytvelt. Call me crazy. It's not like it really matters since he will be with the team.

ZagNative: Check out http://www.guboards.spokesmanreview.com/showthread.php?t=3373, posted yesterday:

"Not everyone has such a dim view of the 2007-08 version of the Running Dogs. See Gary Parrish's column on CBS Sportsline.com, where he lists his preseason favorites:

"17. Washington: Everybody not named Spencer Hawes is back. That's why the Huskies will be back in the NCAA Tournament.

18. Gonzaga: A core of Josh Heytvelt, Matt Bouldin and Jeremy Pargo is what Mark Few will win with for at least the next two years."

ZN offers SoZag abject apologies. I blame it on the headline for the post. A typical Kool-Aid type, if it's not all about the Zags, I ain't goin' there. Maybe I ought to broaden my horizons, eh?

Excellent, but I still don't really put much merit in these.

We can always quibble about our position in the rankings (ala, "What the hell is Washington doing ranked above us????), but there's no denying the importance of consistently being a top-25 team, in terms of scheduling, TV time, and recruiting.

I bet GoZags knows how many years since '99 that we've been nationally ranked.

Regardless of the ranking, or us vs the Dogs, I think Parrish is going to have a big suprise about our personnel. Josh, Pargo & Bouldin may be the core (maybe) (what about Downs or Pendo?? ), but we have 6 or 7 other people that I guarantee will (one or more) have a big impact by the end of the season, let alone the following year. As others have pointed out - better to be under the radar!

As Memphis self-appointed point man in Zag territory, may I urge you to consider giving Memphis a vote for Preseason #1 in the poll on Gary's page? It can only help us, and Memphis fans are great. Having locked up SloZag's browser, ZN is now threatening to send a couple of burly thugs to your house if we don't see some serious movement in Memphis' position on that ranking chart.

Go Memphis!

Memphis is CDC's preseason #1 team. If Jeff Green had returned to G'Town, I would've gone with them.

My only worry with Katz's viewpoint on Memphis is that he might be underestimating how important Jeremy Hunt was to last year's team. That guy hit a lot of clutch shots. But if Jeff Robinson can come in there and score a little, and if Antonio Anderson can regain some of his shooting form, they should be okay. I just think Derrick Rose is the magic bullet that will turn this team from one that made the elite 8 the last 2 years to one that will likely be at the final 4.

I still say Katz and others are underestimating the importance of Arron Afflalo to UCLA, and overestimating the impact of Kevin Love. As good as Love will be, he can't create his own shot with the shot clock ticking down on a team that struggles on offense at times. I still feel Afflalo is more important to the Bruins than Julian Wright is to Kansas, Jeff Green is to G'Town, and Brandan Wright is to North Carolina. Those teams will still miss those guys, but I feel confident that they have personnel to work around it. If UCLA wants to get back to the final 4, someone needs to fill Afflalo's shoes, and if it's Josh Shipp, Russell Westbrook or some other player needs to be as good as Shipp was last season. I'm not saying it won't happen, but I have concerns about it.

Not that this is at all even true, but how much would Heytvelt being out hurt GU? I still think we are top 25 without Heytvelt by mid-season. This team is built so that it does not hinge on any one player. There may be certain offensive sets that may hinge on a player, but not the team as a whole.

I was amused to see what UConn fans had to say on their Scout message board, (http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=342#S=342&F=2871&T=639032) about the Zags' ranking in the Katz poll especially in light of the fact they're not included in the top 25 and we'll be playing them in Boston.

One of the early posters got me chuckling with "After we beat Gonzaga, we'll be back where we belong." Uh, huh. Just a tad of Big East arrogance.

Further down in the thread, though, WaylonSmithers has a smart post where he actually seems to know a bit about GU ball and gives them a nudge up two spots to #13. It's just a message board post, but I thought the perspective was interesting and well written.
