for putting the game away despite a horrific start. Crunch time, when it all mattered, he nailed every shot and did exactly what Carter did the other night: broke their hearts.

Rob Sacre - still the center of the storm.

The dunk was the point where their will was broken.

That being said, Steven's last game against a WCC foe shows how tough that man is.

This was a team effort, I vote for all of the above.

2nd to the refs who were somewhat hard on the SMC bigs.

Stockton was huge. Huge passes. Huge shots. Huge defensive plays. Made the pass to Rob for the huge slam that sealed the deal.

Very, very quick to the 50/50 balls.

Stockton is my player of the game.

So many deserving.

But I'm picking SG for being a WARRIOR.

And he kept the team in line down the stretch, just as a good leader should.

TEAM

A fitting end to a season that has seen MANY players step up at different times to lead.
This win was a microcosm of a remarkable season.

AND Hart hit two key free throws near the end, how fitting is that?

Steven Gray no doubt about it. 15 7 and 3 nobody else was even close to him statistically and he did it while hurt. Huge game for the senior congrats Steven!!!

All the way. What a great game on both ends for our senior. He has been the quiet leader all year and stepped up again when we needed him most.

He lead the continuation of both streaks.

Congratulations, Steven.

Sacre 12/8/4 blocks.......not saying SG didn't have a great game, but the attack was VERY balanced tonight.
I voted TEAM (above)

Steven Gray. Warrior.

If we counted minute-by-minute, it'd be Dower. If we counted making the right play at the right time, it'd be Stockton. If we counted toughness and fortitude, it'd be Gray. If we counted a steady hand and solid play, it'd be Carter.

Oh, the choices!

Tie between Carter and Stockton with honorable mention to Dower.

Steven Gray. I thought he played his best game of the year. The warrior. Yes!!! 15 points....team high. Rebounds,7...second on team. and 3 assists. And he was bleeding like a warrior, left the game to get stiched up and came back the second half for 8 more very important points.

He shut down Holt, who has been a very good player for them in the last 3 games. Holt had been coming on strong for the Gaels, and especially from the 3 pt line. Holt was ineffective tonight.

And the team defense was just awesome. Holding Saint Mary's to 63 points is like holding San Diego to 31. Defense wins championships.

Mike Hart making those two free throws was awesome. And yes, Stockton is incredible. He blows my mind to be playing this well as a red shirt freshman. Carter was not having his best game tonight, nor Meech, and Steven and Stocks filled in nicely.

Steven Gray for reasons already mentioned. A master stroke on his career to date.

I have ALWAYS picked a GUnit, even when it was a close and difficult call. Tonight I cannot. Too good a case can be made for multiple players.

FuManShoes
03-07-2011, 08:47 PM
I'm going with a team GUnit. When Gray went down, Hart stepped up. When Sacre was struggling, Sam and Kelly stepped up. Marquise and Stockton made plays. The coaches shook it up on D. Everyone made free throws. GU showed up to a man.

Stockton's 7 points were "bigger" than McConnell's 24. HUGE passes, great defense. That being said, got to give the nod to Carter.

Steven and the whole team (including those who didn't play tonight) were SO happy. It was great to see such happiness. Rob picked up Few and brought him into the team huddle. Steven then lead the entire team, moving single file, into the Kennel Club. At the trophy presentation, Few got a bit emotional, thanking the crowd and his team, stating that this championship was the sweetest one of all.

I am SO proud of this coach and this team! It hasn't been a pretty journey, but these kids and this staff hung together. The smiles were so genuine tonight, and the relief was palpable. Go Zags! Keep getting better

Carter, again.
His cool consistency in all areas, steals, shooting, defensive, and willingness to find ways to make things happen, I think, is becoming assuring to the rest of the team.

Rob... Jones. I hate to say it as he's my favorite Gael, but that technical kept him on the bench for too long. even if he's not scoring, his presence is huge. and him being out of the game let Few (smartly) play more zone defense.

With his nagging wrapped knee, then getting clobbered and stitches showed the warrior he is hitting clutch shots, free throws, and still pulling down 7 boards, 3assists, 1 steal, and totalling 15 points- wins Player of the Game in the WCC championships! Way to come back from an off night and being our only Senior lead us to our 13nth straight NCAA Tourney (ticket officially Punched!!!)... To go along with our 11nth straight WCC league championship!
I didn't know about this team at first, but we're peaking at the perfect time this year with a lot of very young players!!!

Sacre, Carter, Stockton, Few, and Team are also deserving of the GUnit, but I went with Steven "Cut me, Mick" Gray.

Zag@LMU

Sacre. Yesterday he was laughing when Carter had all the pressure on him to close out the game, and tonight, the pressure was on his shoulders. He had a rough game, but he brushed it off, knocked down his FT's, and broke the camels back with the huge dunk.

Everyone else deserves a shout out too. Overall best team game GU has played in a long time.

You know what I love? There are so many legitimate arguments in this thread for who should be the GUnit of the game. That speaks volumes about this team and how much this is a TEAM!! We have great players that make a great team. There have been what, 5-6 guys that people have argued for in this thread? Amazing!! Outstanding!!

After the game I thought that I would vote TEAM. It was so well rounded! And everyone has brought such valid arguments for TEAM and many individuals. As I mulled it over I realized that it was the presence of Steven Gray that made it all come together. Our Sampson against the Philistines! Everyone that played contributed a piece to the puzzle, but Steven was the glue. How's that for mixing the metaphors? GO ZAGS!

Dirt, you've quickly become my favorite non-zag poster around these parts. You have a terrific sense of humor, all class, and contribute much insight. Regardless of our match-ups, keep coming back for more as we'd love to hear more outta you...good stuff as always.

Gray for all of the above reasons, plus:

Steven lead the team in stitches

Steven drew fouls number four and five on Rob Jones - a huge contribution:link:
The fourth was a tough offensive call and with his face already a mess he just would not back down.

Steven does whatever is necessary in the current game; his scoring has been below his season average lately, because they needed him to do other things - and he did.

Steven's joy at the game's conclusion was infectious.

I'm happy for the entire team, the coaches, the staff, the students, and all of Zag Nation!

The whole team had a great effort and beat the Gaels. In many games this year, it hasn't just been one individual to shine. Many of the wins we've had this year have been a team effort. That's what is so exciting and makes me admire this group of players.
