03-07-2011, 11:08 AM
ESPNU isn't usually on ESPN3 (or at least nto in the past). I'm glad it's on.

Now if only the Zags would wake up and start playing...

03-07-2011, 11:09 AM
Big Lou enforcing her will in the paint :\ Gotta do a better job running the floor.

03-07-2011, 11:12 AM
Oi, pace is favoring SMC in the first bit of the game. Need to get out and run more.

03-07-2011, 11:13 AM
Sloppy start to the game, Lady Zags lead 6-5.

Now 17-15 Zags with 4:48 left.

03-07-2011, 11:53 AM
28-20 @ half. Zags end period on a big run.

Not a typical Lady Zag half. Hopefully they stay on their recent roll and come out strong to start the 2nd.

03-07-2011, 11:57 AM
At the half, the Zags lead 28-20.

Redmon leads the Zags with 9 points.

Vandersloot has 7 points and 5 assists.

For whatever reason, I just saw the GU 'ESPN 'U'' logo for the first time. The bulldog has no eyes...

03-07-2011, 12:05 PM
The Lady Zags just need to relax and run their offense. St. Mary's can't keep up...

The Gaels are only shooting 24% from the field.

03-07-2011, 12:13 PM
Zags now lead 34-23 with 15:33 left.

Sloot now with 7 assists.

03-07-2011, 12:13 PM

Interesting bit about how GU is hosting and they can't be a certain seed, etc.... so they are most likely an 11? Even as the first 11, there are not that many teams better than the lady Zags.

03-07-2011, 12:21 PM
Kelly for three,again...

This is gonna get ugly before it's over. Zags by 30+ by the end. Think it was 104 64 last time against SMC, not going to be that high scoring but the point dif might be the same.

03-07-2011, 12:23 PM
Gonzaga leads 49-29.

Courtney with 12 points and 11 assists.

03-07-2011, 12:27 PM
51-31 Zags with 9 mins left!! Our girls are REALLY good!

03-07-2011, 12:36 PM

I'm glad that was mentioned, I was starting to think that was the case based on the other hosts (a lot of them top seeds) and their likely seeds. sucks for the 6 seed if GU is locked in low @ 11...

It was like the Mona Lisa or the Sistine Chapel. A masterpiece.

Did y'all hear Abby Waner say CV is "the best player I've seen this year." ? I mean, Abby has seen them all and she knows her hoops, an all-star from Duke and the WNBA.

WCC Champs! Gonzaga Beats Saint Mary's 72-46

Courtney Vandersloot had a double-double with 18 points and 16 assists.

March 7, 2011

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Courtney Vandersloot showed Monday that she was worthy of the Naismith Award with 18 points, 16 assists and even a blocked shot as 20th-ranked Gonzaga beat Saint Mary's 72-46 to claim its third straight West Coast Conference tournament title.

The Bulldogs (28-4) now turn their attention to the NCAA tournament, where they advanced to the Sweet 16 a year ago.

Saint Mary's (19-12) likely is headed to the women's National Invitation Tournament.

Vandersloot early Monday was chosen winner of the Naismith Award as the top female collegian 5-foot-8 and under.

She came up big, hitting a 3-pointer that fueled a 20-5 Gonzaga run, turning a 15-8 deficit into a 28-20 halftime lead.

Vandersloot was voted Most Valuable Player in the tourney.

Danielle Mauldin led Saint Mary's with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Katelan Redmon added 17 points, six rebounds and three steals for Gonzaga.

In the first half, Saint Mary's made a concerted effort to slow the pace against the nation's top-scoring team. The Gaels applied full-court pressure defensively, and offensively often walked the ball up the court before driving toward the basket and drawing a foul.

The strategy in the first half worked as Saint Mary's drew 10 fouls and went to the line 13 times, making nine, compared to 1 of 1 for Gonzaga, which was held scoreless for 4 1/2 minutes.

The Bulldogs broke loose in the second half, and pulled away for their third lopsided win this season against the Gaels.

Gonzaga trailed 15-8 with 9:12 left in the first half before Vandersloot's 3-pointer. Redmon tied it at 15 with a jumper then stole the ball and started a fast break capped by Jazmine Redmon's layup.

A layin by Kayla Standish put Gonzaga ahead 25-20 and Katelan Redmon's three-point play gave the Bulldogs a 28-20 halftime lead.

Congratulations lady Zags. I am very proud of you.

I've gotten to see CV play a few times and was blown away with her skill. I hope she gets to play deep into the tournament so I can watch her a few more times.

Courtney Vandersloot leads Gonzaga to WCC women's tournament title
Gonzaga advances easily to NCAA women's tournament after slow start against Saint Mary's.

By Bud Withers

Seattle Times staff reporter

LAS VEGAS Saint Mary's women's basketball coach Paul Thomas was willing to call it "progress," which shows how far the rest of the West Coast Conference is from Gonzaga.

The Zags, who scored 106 points in each of their two previous meetings with the Gaels in 2011, were held to 34 fewer Monday, but still overran Saint Mary's, 72-46, to win their third straight trip to the NCAA tournament.

"It never gets old," said a happy Janelle Bekkering, Gonzaga's senior guard.

Especially since Spokane is a first- and second-round host and Gonzaga will get to try to match its first Sweet 16 appearance of last year in front of the home fans...

...The Gaels slowed the tempo against the Zags, whose 86.1-points-per-game offense leads the nation. It was successful early, as Saint Mary's built a 15-8 lead and Gonzaga seemed flustered at the pace.

But then GU, 20th-ranked, stepped up the defensive pressure and went on an 11-0 run to take the lead for good. Then, and later, they were fueled by senior point guard Courtney Vandersloot of Kentwood High, who ignited the burst with a three-pointer.

"It was tough," Vandersloot said, referring to the slower pace. "But I was proud of the way we reacted."

Vandersloot's fingerprints were all over the victory. She tied her career high with 16 assists, giving her 30 in the two games here, had a team-high 18 points and made both of her three-point attempts.

In the second half, she had a reverse layup on the baseline in which she looked to pass, saw 6-foot-4 Gaels standout Louella Tomlinson looming and used the rim to shield the defender.

"Of all the moves she's made in four years, that was one of the best," said Zags coach Kelly Graves. "I'm glad a national-TV audience could see what we've seen."

It was a big day for the 5-foot-8 Vandersloot, who also was named winner of the Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award, given to the nation's top player 5-8 or shorter. The three-time WCC player of the year was MVP here and joined on the all-tournament team by Gonzaga center Kayla Standish.

"Everybody she plays with is better," said Thomas. "She could pick up four of you guys in this room, and you'd all be great basketball players."...

...Asked how the pace of the game got away from Saint Mary's (19-12), Thomas said, "Vandersloot, (Katelan) Redmon, Standish, everybody they have in uniform over there."

It was Gonzaga's 36th straight victory against a WCC opponent and pushed its record to 28-4. The Zags haven't lost since falling to Notre Dame on Dec. 29.

If it's the play I'm recalling, looks like U Zig, I Zag is a prophet, clairvoyant, or something similar. But UZIZ was juuuuuust a little off.

Make that the Top 2 worthy. :) (It made #2 that night on ESPN. Kelly Bowen's kick ball basket made #10.)

I was there to see CV's shot. Jaws dropped throughout the stands.
