The Zags (23-9) are the antithesis of pretty; they're the polar opposite of fluid. But they're also in their 14th straight West Coast Conference final Monday night, thanks to a white-knuckle effort that was just good enough to beat the pesky Dons.

SF Chronicle (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2011/03/06/SP5H1I59BN.DTL)

The fact the Dons couldn't handle the ball - or keep track of their timeouts - in the final two minutes prevented USF from pulling off what would have been a program-defining upset.

Meehan (http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2011/mar/06/gu-men-outlast-dons-reach-wcc-final/)

“That’s a heck of a win,” Few said. “It’s not about RPIs. Right now San Francisco is a really good team and they’ve been good in February and January. It took them a while to get the pieces in line.”

Blanchette (http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2011/mar/06/blanchette-not-surprizingly-zags-find-way-win/)

Although they still might be playing the semis if the Stoogesque stylings of referees J.T. Orr, Michael Irving and Mike Reed hadn’t succumbed to the clock. Is new officials maestro Dave Libbey paying by the whistle?

Kitsap Sun (http://www.kitsapsun.com/news/2011/mar/06/gonzaga-earns-title-showdown-with-gaels/)

"Guys are stepping up off the bench and making big plays for us," Sacre said. "If you want to go deep in any tournament, you need to have a great, successful bench, and I think we do.

"We're still young, but guys know their roles, and they play hard."

From Meehan's day-after:
“Mike is just flat-out our best defensive player and it’s not even close,” Few said. “If we can get him in there when we go with offense-defense (substitutions), or we can use our timeouts to get an offensive team in there that’s what we’re going to do. Donny (Daniels, GU assistant coach) calls him the best five-minute player in America.”

And then, of course, the free throws by the once enigmatic Carter.

“Stepping to the line seemed really relaxing and easy for me,” he claimed.

“But he still loses to me in free-throw games,” Sacre needled.

“Really?” coach Mark Few said. “Must be verbal harassment.”

Uber doesn't know if he should  or :mecry: or :enraged: or :vomit-smiley-007:

I don't know whether to laugh, cry, be sick, either - - but, media attention to the problem, unvarnished ("the aggressor team is going to get the calls" b.s. cover-up from ESPN is varnished) media attention to what is becoming an increasingly obvious problem is the first step in getting it fixed. Coaches can complain in letters during the week, blogs can go on and on, but media attention is the ONE THING officials recoil from.

I really hope that tonight's officials have been made aware of the embarrassment that last night caused. Anyone know who is scheduled to ref tonight?

When the thought concerns Dave Libbey and his Minions, all of the above most certainly apply...

sometimes you walk off the floor saying, "we weren't very good" -- Dave Libbey

Must be tiring(and somewhat pathetic) to say this to yourself following every game...
