Said Bennett: "How many big shots has Mickey made for us? Nobody hits them all."

Gonzaga's Sam Dower almost hit all of his shots Thursday night. The 6-foot-9 redshirt freshman forward came off the bench to lead Gonzaga with 21 points. He was 7-for-8 from the floor and 7-for-7 from the line.

With 19.9 seconds left in the overtime and St. Mary's up by one, McConnell appeared to make a clean steal on a pick-and-roll pass to Dower. McConnell, though, was called for the foul.

After Dower hit the ensuing free throws, the Zags were ahead to stay.

Gonzaga, which trailed St. Mary's by three games after the Gaels' win in Spokane last month, is in great position to extend its streak of owning at least a share of the conference title to 11 seasons.

The victory moved Gonzaga (20-9, 10-3 WCC) into a first-place tie with the Gaels (22-7, 10-3). The Bulldogs would earn at least a share of their 11th consecutive title if they defeat San Diego on Saturday. Gonzaga clinched no worse than the second seed for the WCC tournament, which means the Bulldogs will have a bye into the semifinals.

Saint Mary’s, which has dropped three straight, entertains Portland on Saturday and a victory would guarantee the Gaels at least a share of their first crown since 1997.

“That was a high-level affair,” said Gonzaga coach Mark Few, whose team trailed Saint Mary’s by three games after falling to the Gaels 73-71 in Spokane last month. “Both teams played really good. I’m proud of our guys. They took the game plan to heart, stuck with it to the end and we won it with our defense and free-throw shooting.”

I thought this was almost a make-up call for Gonzaga. The foul on Gray that preceded this play was great defense. I would say the same for McConnell's play. Neither were fouls. But overall I thought it was a well officiated game.

"MORAGA, Calif. -- St. Mary's College wins the West Coast Conference title about as often as it snows in this suburb of San Francisco. Which is to say, not often at all.
But both snow and clinching celebration were anticipated on Thursday night, as the temperature outside dropped and vulnerable Gonzaga arrived in cozy McKeon Pavilion.
But at the end of the night, there was just more of the usual: steady rain outside."
