Nice Quote:

"By losing to 316th-ranked San Diego, SMC earned the dubious distinction of having the worst loss of any RPI top-50 team this season."

San Diego is down there with the ranks of Academy of Art University and Hawaii-Hilo this season.

Drew, could you paraphrase the rest of the article? I don't have Insider. Thanks in advance!

Sorry, I don't have the insider either . . . just the ~2 paragraphs shown with the link. If anyone else has such, I am sure others would appreciate.

The article talks about how SMC's tourney resume is very similar to the 2008-09 team that didn't make the cut. Basically the same things we've been saying here, that if they don't beat us on thursday they need to win in Vegas:

How much does this year's version of the Gaels have in common with the team from Patty Mills' final season in the East Bay? Let's take a look at the 2008-09 SMC squad's end-of-year resume:

2008-09 Saint Mary's Gaels
Below are the numbers for the Gaels squad that didn't receive an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament

RPI SOS v. 1-50 v. 50-150 v. 150+
48 150 2-3 7-2 15-1

In 2009, the Gaels scored a key BracketBusters win against Utah State (23) late in the season. Still, it wasn't enough to counterbalance losses to the Portland Pilots (120) and the Santa Clara Broncos (198) -- or to even out a relatively weak schedule. In the end, the selection committee left Saint Mary's (24-6, 10-4) out.

Let's complete the comparison. With less than three weeks to go before Selection Sunday, the 2010-11 Gaels' numbers look like this:

2010-11 Saint Mary's Gaels
Here are the numbers for this year's Gaels' squad (as of Feb. 22, 2011)

RPI SOS v. 1-50 v. 50-150 v. 150+
46 127 1-4 7-1 12-1

Doesn't look too different, does it? Of course, with the newly expanded field, Saint Mary's has more room for error this season. But by blowing two double-digit leads in the past week, the Gaels have put themselves in a precarious position that seemed unlikely just a week ago. With no more opportunities for a top-50 win (Gonzaga is the WCC's second-highest-rated team, at 73), SMC can't afford any more slip-ups. If the Gaels lose to the Zags this week and fall in the WCC tourney, things will start to feel like 2009 -- in a hurry.
