Darin Holcomb, of the Gonzaga University baseball team, was selected in the 12th round of the 2007 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Friday. The third baseman was selected by the Colorado Rockies as the 372nd overall pick.

With the selection, Holcomb becomes the second Bulldog to be drafted this year, as Clayton Mortensen was picked Thursday as the 36th overall pick of the draft by the St. Louis Cardinals.

The junior is the 50th overall Zag to be drafted into the MLB as well as the seventh member of the Gonzaga baseball team to be drafted under the guidance of head coach Mark Machtolf, who has served as the Bulldogs’ head coach for four seasons. During Machtolf’s 15 year tenure as a member of the Gonzaga coaching staff, 18 Zags, including Holcomb, have been drafted.

Holcomb, an All-West Coast Conference selection, finished the 2007 campaign with a team-leading .369 clip, including batting .402 in conference play. He led the Bulldogs in three offensive categories – runs scored (43), hits (86) and doubles (17). He also tied for the team-lead with six home runs. His 86 hits rank fourth in the single-season record book, five hits shy of the school record of 91. Holcomb recorded a squad-high 26 multiple-hit games and strung together a season-high 13 game hit streak between February 16 and March 10. He was just one of three Bulldogs to start every game this season.

The MLB First-Year Player Draft continues through Friday.

Congratulations are again in order ...

...but, as he just finished his junior season, what are the odds that he will be returning? Anybody with the inside scoop?

Like hockey, being drafted in baseball does not automatically mean that your amateur status or eligibility is used up. The Rockies "merely" acquired the MLB rights to him - until next year's draft.

It would be nice to have him return for his senior season, but without knowing him or which way he is leaning, it is hard to tell what will happen next.

It's a long way to the Majors, but the Rockies have a lot of studs in the system that play 3B. Good luck to Darin & congrats.

Just a random baseball musing - I know he can't play officially, but I wonder if Ira will hang out at all with the baseball team or maybe play with any of them over the summer, "pick-up game" style. I'm sure he could offer some valuable advice to the team about life as a pro.

Baseball team doesn't "hang out" during the summer. Players are placed in summer leagues all over the country: WCCBL, Cape Cod, NECBL, etc.

I gotta' believe there will be some Zags playing for the Riverhawks this summer, Joe. Think they start next week.

At least one Zag pitcher is up in Ak for today's season opener.
