vs.
Xavier
Day: Wednesday
Date: Dec. 22, 2010
Location: Spokane, Wash.
Time: 8:00 p.m. PT

I understand that there is still a lot of "want revenge" from the Xavier fans. I guess, they still remember this:

Wait, I have to get my wireless mouse.....

Ok, here it is:

"Morrison's 35 helps Gonzaga avoid Xavier's upset bid"

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Adam Morrison was teased, taunted and frustrated. So when Gonzaga finally grabbed control for good against Xavier, he let all that emotion out by slamming the ball against his head -- three times.

With that out of his system, he calmly made two free throws to seal Gonzaga's 79-75 come-from-behind win over Xavier on Thursday night in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

"That's Adam. That's been Adam for a long time," Gonzaga coach Mark Few said. "When he's out there, special things happen and intense things happen. It's vintage Adam."

article for good memories....

Xavier (7-2) has nice wins against Seton Hall (57-52) and Iowa (86-73) in the Virgin Islands and (on Saturday) Wake Forest at home (83-75).

Their center Kenny Frease (Jr, 7-0, 269) is Big Rob’s size. Frease averages 12.8 boards and 11.9 pts. Three other Musketeers average double-figures in scoring: Sophomore Guard Mark Lyons (13.7), Senior Forward Jemel McLean (10.5), and Junior Guard Tu Holloway (21.3). These averages, however, come in the context of a much easier OOC (losses to Old Dominion & Miami, OH) than the Zags’.

All the same, Holloway (6-0) is their shiniest Musketeer, thrice earning the Atlantic-10 Player of the Week. On the Bob Cousy Award list for the nation’s best PG, Holloway had a triple-double against Wake (14 pts, 10 boards, and a whopper 14 assists).

Meech is gonna be on Holloway like a soggy blanket. No letting down. All the Zags will be ready. So adding to the momentum generated at Dallas…

Zags – 78
Musketeers – 64

<One other thing: No way Elias Harris fouls outta this game on a phantom call. Still PO’d about that one>

I'm expecting another somewhat ugly, workmanlike effort from the GU supporting cast, with everyone chipping in some, subpar performances from gray and harris, but GU wins it by 7, something like 71-64.

I'll predict the same result as we had the last time one of our brethren Jesuit schools from the Atlantic 10 visited the GU campus over Christmas break. 79-78 (not in the Zags' favor) (http://www.gozags.com/sports/m-baskbl/recaps/123102aaa.html)

Some significant psycological barriers were crossed the other night down in Dallas. This group of Zags is now a team, and there is no way there will be a letdown against X.

I challenge the doubters to pay close attention to Meech's lockdown "D" in this one... it will be the deciding factor, just like it was against Baylor.

the improvement I saw v. baylor. It always comes down to who wants it more.

I think we have enough experience to relish a victory and have already paid our dues, and sharpened our distaste for losing, with the beatings we've taken and the lessons we've learned.

So GU by 6-10 is my guesstimate.

I don't know that we can pull out a 'W' without our best player against a quality opponent two games in a row. I'd feel better if Elias was Elias, but he hasn't been. It also took two guys who have given us essentially nothing the whole year (Kelly and Marquise) to pull out our last win. Oh and it's a trap game.

My heart tells me Gonzaga, but my gut tells me Xavier.

I'll admit I'm a pessimistic fan...

If this was on the road I'd be extremely worried but I think we pull it out at home. Low scoring affair I think.

Quick look at prior games by Xavier and I see a loss to Miami Ohio and a need to go to 3 OTs to be Wofford. They give up close to 70 ppg and allow opponents to shoot around 40% from the field.

Agree, but the only problem is that the kids are on winter break (visions of Portland State). Let's hope the alum can be extra rowdy and keep the energy of K2 nice and high...

I expect Gray to play but not be needed.

Zags hold X at bay throughout and win by something like 72-64

Go Zags!

Actually the last time an A-10 team (St Joes) visited Spokane here was the result. I expect the same. A Zag victory--

Dec. 31, 2005
SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - J.P. Batista scored a career-high 32 points and grabbed 15 rebounds as No. 8 Gonzaga beat Saint Joseph's 102-94 Saturday, giving the Bulldogs their 30th consecutive home victory, the longest streak in the country.

LIZF - you're predicting a WIN by GU? I'm not sure what to say... I'm sort of stunned...

I think this will be a close, grind-it-out kind of game. I think we'll shoot a good %, but have a boatload of TOs (yeah, no big news there) and X will have their depth tested severely and shoot much better than they have been from 3. I'm not sure who'll win, but I'll predict the game ends in the high 60s to low 70s and neither team ends up in front by more than a possession down the stretch (until maybe some FTs in the dying seconds).

LIZF stunned me also, but his reasoning is sound. This Xavier team is a little like Baylor in that they have played a relatively soft schedule and their only true road game ended up in a loss to Miami of Ohio. This is their second true road game and I would think they put up a better effort than Miami but not enough.

I agree that a big psychological hurdle was overcome in Dallas and now our road warriors have their first significant home test since SDSU, which now, looks like a "good" loss - in that SDSU is undefeated and we played them tough throughout even though the team had failed to really "find" itself at that point, had a lame Harris and relied on 35 from Gray. I think this team cannot wait to get a "real" game at home and brings a tough one through.

LIZF almost picked the exact score the last game though, if i am not mistaken.

This is a difficult game to pick, i say
it goes O.T.

and we take it 72-70...this will be my second Christmas present, as last week was my first Christmas Present to myself.

Go Zags!!!

Heck predicting "losses" wasn't bringing much luck this season. So far I have called the two "big" wins (Marquette and Baylor). So might stay on the positive mojo track this season.

Looking at the teams we've played - in terms of KenPom's ratings, we're 2-5 against the top 40, Xavier is 1-0.

I hope not. We need to show X, who's boss!

....and, add more salt to their wound. :)

I'm ready to see if Mark Few can keep the fan switch turned to "Low" and watch the Zags play a drag-out physical match to beat the X-men.

I'm looking for a low scoring affair, and I'd like to say we win by 8 - but with the students gone, that's worth at least -5.

Prediction: Zags 58, Xav 55 (Xavier bouncing a half court three off the back iron for good measure, so close, yet so far...)

Thank God we're at home. We have the guys who can pull this off. If they get their minds set on coming out of this game with a victory they will. This game is, in every way, just as big (if not bigger) than the Baylor game. The Zags need to begin to develop that attitude of
THIS IS OUR HOMECOURT, BABY. NO ONE BEATS US IN K2." They need to get that pride back like the old days. Losing is not an option to day.
