The NCAA season 2010/2011 is approaching so it is about time to take a look what happened this summer in College basketball in relation with European talent. We go over the main players recruited from the 2010 class and take a look forward to the Class of 2011 and 2012.

The most active College on the European market this summer was Gonzaga. After having brought in Elias Harris last summer with the success that we could see this season, the coaching staff around Mark Few did again a great job by signing two U18 National Team players in Mathis Keita and Mathis Mönninghoff. Both players will most likely have an immediate impact for the WCC team. Mönninghoff brings the necessary threat from behind the three-point line, good defense and basketball understanding while Keita will probably do some damage on NCAA level when attacking the gaps that the defense gives him. He will also help to create good positions for Harris as the defense needs to collapse on the drives of the French guard.

And this:

Poland is a hot recruiting stop at the moment as several Colleges are showing interest in their highly talented 1993 generation. Tommy Lloyd from Gonzaga told in a recent interview that he just came back from Poland while we heard as well that the University of Cincinnati is currently in the Eastern European country to recruit. The main targets are of course Mateusz Ponitka, Tomasz Gielo and Przemyslaw Karnowski but a player like Piotr Niedzwiedzki is also getting some interest. All of these prospects are members of the 2012 Class and will draw more and more interest over the next months because of the limited number of good big men in the US for that class.

So BZ, what you are really saying is that the Zags didn't drop lastnames from the uni's out of some sort of dislplay of solidarity - it was to save some cash.

Niedzwiedzki alone probably cost $45 to put on the back of a jersey...

...Przemyslaw Karnowski.

Everyone knows that.

Good stuff.

I'm hoping for Tomasz Gielo or Piotr N. (when in doubt, just use initial) :D

Obviously, if the staff can pull a big out of, say, California and a big out of Poland, that fills the quota for bigs of 2012. Pretty simple recruiting for '12.

BZ, can you quickly list and describe GU's top Forward-Center prospects for 2012? thx in advance.

I'm no BZ, but I'm guessing Grant Jerrett and Skylar Spencer. Believe both have been offered.

Skylar Spencer, plz.

Sadly, I think we've dropped out of the Grant Jerrett sweepstakes; I hear he is likely a UCLA lean, but time will tell.

Definitely Skylar Spencer. ZN's chart at top of page has the main list, save for the Polish bigs.

Are any of the Poles true Centers? It seems like both Spencer and Jerrett would classify as more SF/PF types.

Many would say that the true Center position isn't really necessary in Gonzaga's offense, but I'm thinking more defensively and protecting the rim. If anything, after Sacre/Harris are gone, we will need someone to man the paint and battle...especially if we face a post heavy team in the NCAAs...

Are there truly no 7 footers on the horizon?

Karnowski is a true center. 6'11" 255#

Wow, lots of google images support your claim! He's an imposing fella. One blogger compares him to Marcin Gortat, which is pretty high praise.

Looks like he's a good FT shooter to at 75% at the U17 Worlds...nice.

Both Karnowski and Ponitka made the all tournament team with Kevin. They would identify the Zags as having a class act at point guard.

The Polish team followed up the U17 World Championships by also participating in the same U18 Men's Europeanship championship Keita and Mönninghoff competed in. Poland finished 6th, just ahead of France. The team page for Poland is here (http://www.fibaeurope-u18men.com/en/default.asp?cid={0A5D217A-4698-4FA8-B126-60BCC13F0FEC}&teamID=347&compID={2248A846-FA78-40FF-B03C-54B460890F45}&season=2010&roundID=7323&).

I haven't checked out anybody's stats in detail at the U18's except Ponitka's:

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_UkLNCxT74w4/TLPk4zkKBAI/AAAAAAABLlc/AXK8Y7fSQ1w/2-1-08-14%20Mateusz%20Ponitka%20U18%20stats.jpg

... but I really wanted to post this pic of Ponitka, who reminds me of Micah Downs here.

http://lh6.ggpht.com/_UkLNCxT74w4/TLPk4k6kygI/AAAAAAABLlU/qOiTb-afMgU/s512/2010-09-12%20Mateusz%20Ponitka%20U18%20v%20Croatia.jpg

Now we just have to wait and see if xtf or someone else can find out which one or ones staff is most interested in.

All those Poles look great!

So is this the guy we're after? Looking at his #'s he appears to be a big that likes to play like a big, no 3 point attempts. On the down side, he had far and away his worst game against the Americans, which he would be facing on a daily basis if he came here. lol
