Thanks for the update, BZ!

And they've got Mounties! Be still my foolish heart!

Rob with some nice offense. His shooting range looks like it has increased a few feet.

08-10-2010, 07:26 PM
Already posted. See one line down.

08-10-2010, 07:27 PM
He had a nice block, too. Picked up a foul early, though.

08-10-2010, 07:34 PM
Canada stomping them by 20. A few NBA D-leaguers in the game.

Rob looked very good at both ends. KO scores!

KO gets great position, grabs a rebound, runs the floor, then later throws down a lob from Rautins.....awesome!

08-10-2010, 07:43 PM
It was fun to watch 'our' guys play. KO did have a couple of very nice moves for scores.

08-10-2010, 07:44 PM
Kelly scores on two quick buckets...

His first points were delivered on a nice juke, drive, and lay-up from the right side, then he converts on a half court pass & alley-oop via Andy Rautins.

PS-> Does KO look significantly quicker away from the ball and on defense, or is it just me(or possibly the China players)?

Halftime Score

Canada 41 China 16

The game isn't as close as the score. China is trying to consistently dribble drive into a zone.

08-10-2010, 07:47 PM
How many times was Gonzaga mentioned in the first half... Two zags showing well, all good for KW and Pangos who I'm sure are watching the game.

China ranked #9
Canada ranked #19

Coulda fooled me.

08-10-2010, 08:13 PM
Canada frontline is now Sacre and Kelly.

08-10-2010, 08:17 PM

08-10-2010, 08:21 PM
Kelly passes to Rob along the FT line, Rob misses the shot, Kelly gets the rebound, goes up strong and draws the foul...

Fun to seem those two working together and making things happen for Canada!

This game is only making my cravings grow stronger for GU hoops--the season can't come early enough!

08-10-2010, 08:23 PM
next olympics could have Canada with a starting five all from the future National Champions from GONZAGA!

08-10-2010, 08:29 PM
Sacre is SO good on the court; if he could only stay outta foul trouble.

More minutes, the better, but Rob has a hard time keeping himself in games and off the bench. Once RS remedies this issue, he'll develop into one of the best centres in the Country.

Canada wins 86-62. Excellent live tv streaming from basketball.ca is the star of the game for me. Hope it continues for the games v. France.

08-10-2010, 09:14 PM
Dunno bout you guys but our two kids could look a lot better. Foul prone, not so quick to the ball and limited rebounds. Not sure of the significance....
but they didn't look to be hard at work. Just my opinion.

the streaming actually comes from www.sportscanada.tv which aired the game for Canada Basketball, still excellent quality

The games were streamed by Sports Canada TV, not Basketball.ca. Some time contributer Coach Ebe usually works the broadcasts. They would have been contracted by Basketbal Canada for the event.

The reason I mention this is because Basketball Canada could not promote parkas to eskimos. The radio commercials for this event began last week though it had been scheduled since April. If it was not for the huge Chinese fan base I would guess they could have held this game at a 500 seat venue and not sold it out. I would also guess that twice as many fans watched Rob and Kelly in thier high school final games.

Its a shame that they ( Canada Basketball) do such a poor job promoting our game as we are at a nice point in our national program right now.

I will have more on the game in a bit.

Ronh pm, I understand your frustration, but from what I understand, the B.C. Titans could very well have more staff than Canada Basketball.....

Unless its Ice Hockey, international sports are not really well supported by government/business in Canada. Australia on the otherhand seems to be able to support its international sports better.....

08-10-2010, 10:29 PM
Sorry to give credit where it wasn't due. Actually, basketball.ca has been a pet peeve of mine, in the way they are generally a day late and a dollar short on news related to the national teams.

Game story from the Vancouver Sun (http://www.vancouversun.com/sports/Fired+Kendall+leads+Canadian+basketball+team+over+ China/3383212/story.html).

Kelly Olnyk, a 19-year-old from Kamloops heading into his sophmore season at Gonzaga University in Spokane, had seven points and six rebounds in just nine effective minutes off the bench . . .
I thought Kelly played well. I wasn't as impressed with Rob's outing.

I guess the box score, when it's available will tell us more.

No Yao Ming

Ok my thoughts..China was tired or had the flu or something. They had no energy whatsoever from the tip. If China went 30% from the free throw line and 40% from the field I'd be surprised. Canada took advantage and the game was not in doubt from after the first quarter. Which was good for the Zag players as I'm fairly certain Rautins in a close game would not give a rats ass that this was a homecoming of sorts for Olynyk and Sacre.

Kelly and Rob both got decent minutes. Kelly made the most of his and looked a little more with the program that did Rob. It could be because Kelly actually was a little more with the program having spent more time in camp and had a bit more of an understanding of the offense at this point.

Olynyk looked good with ball on the offense, showed some flair around the net with a ball fake and move to the hoop to finish off the glass, a nice dunk and after missing a layup staying under the hoop and battling for an offensive board to score and get an and one. I believe he finished with 7 points

Sacre never got it going on the offensive side and he just didnt look confortable to me. Either he never got himself in position recieve a pass or the guards could not find him but at any rate he did not get to the hoop often. On the other hand, he was also going against Yi Jianlian of the Wizards most the night as well as four other Chinese players over 7 feet including a couple others that have also seen time in the NBA.

Defensively Rob was on the big man from the Wizards and I thought he did a nice job including a huge block on Yi Jianlian at the hoop. Even though a foul was called on Shepard on the play, Rob was having nothing of Jianlian dunking on him. Rob had a few nice rebounds and I thought considering what he was up against and his newness to the program, made the most of his minutes.

I'm going to include some very low quality pics I took with the wifes point and shoot. I started the game on the floor but moved up to the reds after the first quarter so these are pretty bad but it is what it is.

Hmm..cant get them to show in post..no idea..They are here..http://www.flickr.com/photos/ronhole/ Once I figure it out I will direct link them

Oh yeah, one other thing...my kid swears Olynyk is taller than Sacre..

It looks like 4 images is max per post.

You are right about CB and their brutal promotional skills. They did not even have it on their website that sportscanada.tv was doing the game. I would agree that Kelly may indeed be taller than Sacre at this point as he is now 6'11 1/2" and I would not be surprised if he ends up adding another inch or two. I know the coaching staff is pleased with Kelly's continued improvement and the experience he gained with the development teams trip to Europe has been helpful. It will be interesting to see which of the players end up making the final 12 man roster.

Fraser was the only healthy player who didn't play (at least I haven't heard anything about him being injured), and Landry only played 2 minutes. So, at the risk of reading too much into playing time in an exhibition game, Sacre and Olynyk may have a leg up on making the squad.

Im really hoping Daniels can work with these two this year and we will see what we all know they are capable of.

Four more pics

The Zags guard the paint

Sacre with a big block on Jianlin

Jianlin taking on Sacre

Sacre going to rim against Jianlin

I remembered I have some video I took as well. Again crappy quality but will get it uploaded as soon as I get time

ronh_pm, those are fine pics! Thanks!

Incidentally, the game is still available online, in archived video here (http://www.sportscanada.tv/index.php/aug-10-smnt-vs-china). Sacre enters the game at the 25:15 mark, Kelly at 42:30.

Zagwatch cheatsheet through the first half from archived game video (http://www.sportscanada.tv/index.php/aug-10-smnt-vs-china):

25:15:00 Rob Sacre enters the game (#12)
27:10:00 Rob fouls
31:00:00 Sacre block
34:27:00 Rob puts it on the ground, right hook, scores after a shot fake
38:25:00 Rob gets fouled after going to the low dribble, "a bad
habit that he picked up in HS and has carried through to Gonzaga"
I think Rob's subbed out after that
42:29:00 Kelly enters the game (#6)
44:55:00 Kelly drives for the score off a screen from Joel Anthony
45:39:00 Replay of Kelly's score
48:10:00 Kelly scores off a great lob pass from Rautins
1:03:50 Game resumes after halftime

08-11-2010, 09:41 AM
As much as I'd like to see these kids on campus gelling with teammates, what a fantastic opportunity to play for their country. Way to go Bobby and Kelly!

Game story up on basketball.ca (http://www.basketball.ca/en/hm/inside.php?sid=1&id=4397) with link at the bottom to the box score.

Pretty good stats for young Mr. Olynyk in limited minutes.

08-11-2010, 11:33 AM
Wow, he tied the team lead for rebounds in 9 minutes with 4 of them being offensive! Very nice.

08-11-2010, 04:30 PM
Thanks for posting the photos ronh_pm.

Starting point guard Jermaine Anderson did not play at all, Kepkay got a chance to start in front of his hometown crowd and had 8 assists, he should end up as the backup over Bell. I think that Rob and Kelly got a chance to play in front of the home crowd instead of Frasier. It will be interesting to see what minutes they get in TO later in the week.

Love the music!
If you want to hear the whole song you can hear it here. The second one may be my favourite Classified song.

Fun stuff! I like the music as the backdrop for the video, though.
