07-07-2010, 12:35 PM
A reliable source confirmed today that JH has signed with Lottomatica Roma for next season. He's spending the the summer in or near Spokane.

Here's hoping the deal for Josh in the Eternal City turns out to be a great experience.

Josh Heytvelt could be loaned to Cimberio Varese
Josh Heytvelt is on the radar of Cimberio Varese for the next season. The 24-year-old American center is under contract with Lottomatica Roma, and the Italian club could decided to send him off of loan next season, and Varese could be an option. Heytvelt played just two game in the last Lega A after being signed from Oyak Renault, where he averaged 17.3 points and 10.0 rebounds per game in the TBL.

An accidental blow in practice for Lottomatica breaks Josh's nose, and he underwent successful surgery. However, it looks like the injury will keep him from traveling with the team for an upcoming European Championships qualifying game. (Google translator (http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=it&u=http://www.all-around.net/&ei=n8eCTKbEOpPCsAPk4sD2Bw&sa=X&oi=translate&ct=result&resnum=9&ved=0CFoQ7gEwCA&prev=/search%3Fq%3D%2522Josh%2BHeytvelt%2522%2B-guboards%2Broma%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26client%3Dfiref ox-a%26channel%3Ds%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26tbs%3Dqdr:d%26prmd%3Do) doesn't produce very understandable translations of Italian language stories.)
Rome - When it rains, it snows.

And so after the issue of wrist ligament scafuloide Angelo Gigli, some 40 days to stop experienced yesterday with the operation perfectly succeeded this afternoon in training at Pala Titian prior to dispatch annual pre-season in Folgaria Sunday, the center Josh Heytvelt suffered an accidental blow to the nose.

Transported to the hospital was given the diagnosis late in the evening, dry, final: fracture fragmented to the septum, surgery is essential to the center of Dutch origin and other tile home Lottomatica.

Meanwhile now the rest of the troops were aggregated Italic veterans from the toils of qualyfin round at the European Championships, under the imminent departure in Trentino.

Looks like Josh is working his way back into action for some of Roma's pre-season games.

He has an interview up on euroleague.tv. If you're interested, you can check it out here (http://www.euroleague.tv/videos-ondemand.php?find=heytvelt).

Playing basketball and living in Rome? This sure sounds a lot better than the first job I had after leaving GU.

Stretchlimo does it again! Man! Is it ever nice to have you on our team on guboards!

I had scoured the internets just this morning and missed that great video. Josh is sounding terrific!

There is a video overview of Virtus Roma (aka Lottomatica Roma) (http://euroleague.infrontams.tv/index.php?id=3145) on that site.

Lottomatica Roma plays Brose Baskets in the first round of Euroleague play today at 21:00hrs, Noon Pacific Time. Live streaming should be available here (http://www.stream2watch.com/). I believe Josh will be wearing #35.

Go Josh!

10-20-2010, 11:34 AM
I'm getting audio but no video as yet. Video is available on the other games linked on that site, so I hope that they get it together for Josh's game ... Italian audio doesn't do much for me ...

Here's another live video feed (http://allsport-live.ru/eng/tv.php?channel=19579), which is working for me.

Edited to add: Live stats here (http://live.euroleague.net/games.aspx?ig=euro_6&st=20&dp=CUTPCF167AE32Q27N5PD74C36&z=0). I've been in and out of the game, but it looks like Josh hasn't played much yet, two points and a qick foul early. Lottomatica leading 53-44 when I last checked.

Josh's Lottomatica Virtus Roma team plays another Euroleague game at noon today, at Spirou Charleroi in Belgium.

With luck, there should be live video streaming at Stream2watch.com (http://www.stream2watch.com/). Josh is #34 in this game.

Live Stats should be here (http://www.euroleague.net/main/game-center).

Euroleague.TV has a 1 1/2 minute video preview (http://euroleague.infrontams.tv/index.php?id=3338) of the games this week in Euroleague Group B, with Virtus Roma the last previewed in the brief video.

This will be Virtus Roma's second Euroleague game. They beat Brose Baskets handily their first game, in Rome. They've also played two regular Italian League games, splitting them 1-1.

Josh played brief minutes in two of the three games, scoring two points in one and hitting a three-pointer in the first regular season game, seen in this Youtube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KdihuW0G9-U). (That DiabloRoma Youtube channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/DiabloRoma) looks like it might be a good one to bookmark.)

In the game.

Just dunked! Go Josh!

Roster says #34, but he's wearing 35.

10-27-2010, 01:03 PM
Virtus Roma wins 64-55, for their second Euroleague game.

Looked to me as if Josh played well. (The screen clarity wasn't +10). I saw one of two blocks that drew some ahs from the crowd and a great slam dunk. Apparently, however, later in the game, he was called for an unsportsmanlike foul, per the game report (http://www.euroleague.net/main/results/showgame/report?gamecode=17). Didn't see it. Wonder what it was about.

10-27-2010, 11:16 PM
Re. unsportsmanlike: It was on a post move by Josh. He was being guarded closely by Brian Greene. Josh pivoted to try and create some space, but on the swing-through his elbow clipped Greene in the kisser. Nothing intentional about it - just one of those things.

Anyway, nice to see Josh work his way back into the rotation and contribute to the win.

The slam ZN mentioned above occurs early in this highlight clip...

Josh's Virtus Roma plays its fourth Euroleague game at noon Spokane time vs. Unicaja at Malaga, Spain. Virtus Roma is 2-1 in Euroleague play, but is coming off a whipping administered to Roma at home last week by Real Madrid.

Josh's stats and game time (http://www.eurobasket.com/player.asp?Cntry=ITA&PlayerID=89251) haven't been much to write home about playing for Rome thus far, so I'm hoping he steps up today. He played very well in Turkey last year, so fingers crossed he gets his sea legs under him for Rome soon.

Live video should be available at Stream2watch.com (http://www.stream2watch.com/). Live stats (http://www.euroleague.net/) should be available at Euroleague.net.

That usually reliable live video streaming site seems to be down right now. Live stats are here (http://live.euroleague.net/gamesjs.aspx?ig=euro_42&st=20&dp=CUTPCF167A851Q224LXL53331&z=1). Josh just entered the game.

Happy to see Josh had some nice numbers today as Virtus Roma beat Benetton Treviso 84-73 (, in the Italian League.

Next is a Euroleague game Wednesday.

Looking very much like the Josh of old:

And with a look I don't remember seeing before:

Nice game for Josh, in a losing effort at home. He was on the floor most of the game and was the second leading scorer for Roma, as well as pulling down 7 rebounds and putting something up in almost every category.

Game pic:

Virtus Roma is 2-3 in Euroleague play, with five games remaining:

I'll wait until the rest of this week's Euroleague games play out (tomorrow) to see where they are in the standings.

Next up for Josh is Armani Jeans Milano, a regular season Italian League game on Nov. 21. Should be a serious challenge, as Armani is leading the league.

11-25-2010, 06:44 AM
Important Euroleague game today against Brose Basket at Bamberg, Germany. Both teams must win in order to have a chance to make the top 16 who advance in Euroleague play. Josh's Virtus Roma team blasted Brose Baskets 83-16 in the first round in Rome.

Game time: 11:15 AM Spokane time

Live Box Score (http://www.euroleague.net/) should be available here.

Live video streaming (http://www.stream2watch.com/) might be available here.

Standings for Group B are shown in the bottom screen below:

Brose Baskets has some players that ring bells with me. Reyshawn Terry, who would have played against Josh for North Carolina in the Zags' win over UNC in 2006 in Madison Square Garden; Tibor Pleiss, Elias' teammate for the GNT this past summer; and Phillipp Neuman, another young German, who we talked about as a prospect for the Zags on the MBB.

Reyshawn Terry v. Pendo in Madison Square Gardens;

tibor Pleiss, middle, with Elias and Robin Benzig, after advancing to the second round at FIBA in summer 2009:

Good luck to Josh in this important Thanksgiving Day outing for him in Germany.

11-25-2010, 01:13 PM
Wow! Close finish, on a last second three-point shot by Darius Washington. Pretty nice game for Josh, too. At least two of his points came off a dunk, so there should be some nice highlght video later. A block and four rebounds go along with his points, but FT shooting not so good today.

12-02-2010, 08:37 AM
Virtus Roma hosts the Belgian team Spirou Charleroi at 11:30 AM today in the seventh round of Euroleague play. From Euroleague.net's preview (http://www.euroleague.net/main/results/showgame/preview?gamecode=77&seasoncode=E2010) of the game:
A crucial Group B battle with major implications on the race for the Top 16 takes place in the Italian capital on Thursday when Lottomatica Roma hosts Spirou Charleroi.

Roma comes off an uplifting road win over Brose Baskets on a Charles Smith buzzer-beating triple to improve to 3-3. The win put Roma in a tie for third place in the group and just one victory behind the group co-leaders, Olympiacos and Real Madrid. Meanwhile Spirou Charleroi stopped Unicaja last week 79-74 for its second successive win and a 2-4 record. .... Crosariol and frontcourt mate Josh Heytvelt will play key roles this time against the Spirou center duo of Santiago and veteran shot-blocker Andre Riddick.

Live video (http://www.stream2watch.com/) may be available here, and live stats (http://www.euroleague.net/)will be available at Euroleague.net.

12-02-2010, 05:38 PM
Virtus Roma stays alive in the run for the Top 16 in Euroleague, with a 95-83 win over Spirou Charleroi, in front of a sparse crowd in Rome.

I don't know why Virtus Roma is so stingy with the space they allot for player photos on their site, but FWIW ...

10 pts for Josh, 5 boards, a couple of steals, a block, and 24 minutes of play.

12-09-2010, 10:50 AM
In Rome right now and turned on the TV and Josh's Euroleague game against Real Madrid is on TV. He just made an underhand pass in the lane (still sometimes thinks he's a perimeter guy) and turned it over.

Good to see him...looks like he lost his razor.

12-09-2010, 10:53 AM
3 TOs in the last 4 possessions and Josh got yanked (I think his coach's head was about to explode it was so red). Hopefullly he'll come back later and play better.

12-09-2010, 06:23 PM
Thanks, azzagfan. Appreciate your observations.

Virtus Roma lost today's game v. Real Madrid 50-72. Box Score (http://www.euroleague.net/main/results/showgame?gamecode=89). It's showing Josh with a little over 8 minutes, 2 points and one turnover.

Game pic:

I saw a story yesterday in which Roma's coach said they had to win one of the three remaining games in Euroleague Group B to have a chance to move on the top 16. Obviously, their chances are less now with just two games remaining.

While they may still be alive in Euroleague, they're in trouble in the regular Italian league. I saw something recently that said they were in danger of relegation to a lower league.

Josh appears to have not performed as well as hoped and expected and seems likely to come under increasing pressure. He has a one-year deal. Good luck to him!

12-11-2010, 09:58 AM
The 1 turnover in the box must have been very generous on the scorer's part.

He didn't play well in the few minutes he was in (he did start the game), but he was clearly in the coach's doghouse. It was only one game, but it doesn't appear he's gelled with this team well.

12-13-2010, 03:12 PM
In the Italian League game yesterday vs. Banca Tercas, Josh DNP. I fear you're right about him being in the coach's doghouse ... I guess we'll see on Wednesday, when there's a Euroleague game vs. vs. Unicaja, which is 5-3 to Virtus Roma's 4-4. After that, they play Olympiacos, which is 6-3. Odds would not seem to be good for them making the Top 16.

12-14-2010, 03:40 PM
A loss by Spirou Charleroi to Olympiacos resulted in putting Virtus Roma in the Top 16 in Euroleague play. They play Unicaja tomorrow, Dec. 15, at 11:45 am Pacific. Unicaja is also qualified in the Euroleague Top 16. the teams are actively jockeying for positions within the group to better their seeding for the Top 16 draw. Unicaja will remain tied with Olympiacos – and perhaps Real Madrid – if it wins, but could fall back to fourth place if it loses. Roma enters the game in fourth place, but could potentially finish the regular season as high as second in Group B.

Euroleague site pregame story (http://www.euroleague.net/main/results/showgame/preview?gamecode=102) had this interesting tidbit:

Josh Heytvelt has played the most minutes (125) of any player in the Euroleague this season without delivering an assist.

Live streaming might be available at Stream2watch.com (http://www.stream2watch.com/)

Live stats on the Euroleague site (http://www.euroleague.net/).

12-15-2010, 12:41 PM
Virtus Roma wins it, in a nip-and-tuck game. Josh broke the assist drought and had five points and six rebounds.

12-15-2010, 01:51 PM
Nice win for Roma. Their only EL wins previous to this were over teams who didn't qualify for the Top 16 (swept both Spirou Charleroi & Brose Baskets).

Would be cool if Roma and Maccabi end up in the same 4-team group when the Top 16 rolls around. :)

01-04-2011, 09:25 AM
So here's how the final standings ended up in the Regular Season phase of the Euroleague:

The best four in each group now advance to the Top 16. And wouldn't you know it.......in today's Top 16 draw, Maccabi and Roma were drawn into the same group, Group F:

Like the Regular Season, the Top 16 phase is double round-robin, so Jeremy and Josh will get to face each other twice. The game in Tel Aviv will be in late January, and the return match in Rome will be in early March. Should be fun.

01-09-2011, 09:06 AM
I think that Josh may have been released by Lottomatica. I might be wrong, because their site is difficult for me to navigate and translate from Italian. However, he's not on the roster for the game being played today (, and a comment in an Italian language article (http://www.pianetabasket.com/?action=read&idnotizia=17182) leads me to believe the team may have released him because of issues with being over-limit on the number of foreigners on their team.

Reinforcing that interpretation is this, from sportando.net (http://www.sportando.net/eng/europe/turkey/19560/antalya_is_targeting_josh_heytvelt.html):
Antalya is targeting Josh Heytvelt

The American player may return to Turkey

The future of Josh Heytvelt may be in Turkey again, where he has started his pro career shining with the jersey of Oyak Renault. The American power forward was signed by Virtus Roma at the end of the last season after a year in TBL in which he averaged 17ppg and 10rpg.

Heytvelt was confirmed by Lottomatica in the summer but in the last games he finished out of rotation of coach Matteo Boniciolli and might leave soon the Italian team.
Heytvelt is averaging 6ppg in Serie A and 5ppg in Euroleague with the jersey of Virtus Roma.I could be totally wrong, but time will tell.

01-09-2011, 12:39 PM
I suspect you're probably right, ZN. That box you linked to shows Roma has a new player, an import from Bosnia. With Josh not even listed, it adds up. So apparently there goes the Josh-vs-Jeremy Euroleague matchup (though as spotty as Josh's PT has been - including just 9 minutes in his game on Jan.6 - he might've been watching Jeremy more than playing against him). More importantly, hope everything works out and that Josh finds a better situation.

01-10-2011, 12:48 AM
Tried to do some more digging on Josh's status, but couldn't find anything suggesting a release - other than what ZN linked to above. (Though the term "release" there could just be one of those lost-in-the-translation things...)

I did find one other Italian league box score (from Week 2, back in October) where Josh wasn't listed on the 12-man roster, even though he was definitely part of the team. So maybe this most recent situation is just a similar instance. (Of course he was still recovering from a broken nose then, too.)

Can't know for sure until something official comes out. (And yes, that comment comes from the department of redundancy department.) Ideally, I'd like to see Josh stay with Roma, get more run, and make the most of it. Won't be surprised, though, if he ends up elsewhere. After all, his last six Italian league games have been DNP-DNP-4 min.-19 min.-9 min.-DNP. With the new import that Roma brought in, seems like someone has to go.

01-11-2011, 06:59 AM
Seems like he's out.
