Daniel Deane, a promising recruit Gonzaga lost to Utah last year, has just been kicked off the team:

Seems Mr. Deane wasn't getting along too well with his new coach.

I wish him the best, but if that article was valid, I wouldn't want him to come to Gonzaga. Just my two cents.

And while he increasingly showed promise as last season progressed - he wound up averaging 3.9 points and 2.7 rebounds in 29 games - Deane also frustrated the former coaching staff with his academic shortcomings and occasional resistance to sticking to the defensive and rebounding role they envisioned for him.

The main worry that I always had regarding this kid was the bit I underlined. Those of us who followed his recruitment closely were afraid he would stubbornly resist the idea of playing down low and playing tough.

Deane has nowhere near the perimeter skills that a guy like Heytvelt does. He has no reason to be out there hanging around.

Scout's Greg Hicks didn't think much of Deane. He's one recruit I was never sorry we didn't get. Now, Deon Thompson, otoh......
