The Zags are beaten by THREE different WCC opponents (USF, LMU, SMC). Does this say something about the 2009-'10 version of the Zags? Or does it say something about the improvement in quality in the WCC? After all, SMC (whom the Zags beat twice in the regular season) advanced to the Sweet Sixteen. And convincingly so, IMO.

The Zags have had recent "rebuilding/reloading" seasons without three-loss WCC outcomes. So, Kiddwell would propose, this isn't simply an issue of "the Zags were young." Kiddwell thinks the WCC is getting better.

In that regard and looking forward, here's food for thought: LMU brings back their entire starting lineup for 2010-'11 -- Vernon Teel (sr); Jarrad Dubois (jr); Drew Viney (jr); Kevin Young (jr); and Ashley Hamilton (so).

Plus, and Kiddwell can't remember them all, several impressive recruits are coming online for our opponents this fall.

A serious blow to LMU. Very disappointed about this. Kevin was athletic, energetic, just fun to watch. Wonder who steps up for him...

Blake Stepp's junior year (2003), the Zags lost to Portland in the old Kennel, lost to LMU in Gerston, then lost to San Diego in the tourney finals.

Yikes! Kiddwell needs a brain boost! :o

In any case, does the 2009-'10 season signal WCC improvement? Or just the normal undulations of West Coast Conference men's basketball? In Kiddwell's mind the conference seemed tougher this year.

The downhill slide started with those weak sisters on that 98-99 squad who barely managed to avoid the ignominy of three losses against WCC opponents but nevertheless gave it up to San Diego and Pepperdine.

I'd see nothing wrong with an 11-3 (or 10-4) WCC regular season if the season ended up in 2nd (or 3rd) weekend of the NCAA dance.

Equally important (in my opinion) to strength at the top of the conference is having the WCC avoid a disaster (i.e. multiple 300+ RPI) at the bottom.

Kevin is good kid and very popular on campus. We have two guys coming back from red shirts and two great recriuts... We will be fine.

"Associate Head Coach Myke Scholl ... in talking to the Loyolan Friday wanted to stress his continued commitment to help Young academically.

""My initial reaction on top of [what Coach Good has said] has to do with academics," said Scholl. "If he wants to get his release nobody worries that he won't find a place to play, he's a good player, our biggest worry is about him getting his degree. He would be the first in his family to do it and its a commitment we as a coaching staff made to his family. We know he'll do well athletically we just want to make sure he does well academically and graduates.""

I'm hopeful St. Mary's doesn't take a step back without the man you love to hate graduating, but they've got some talent on that roster.

Didn't SF Rob Jones (a terrific player for, if memory serves, USD) transfer to Saint Mary's then sit out last season? He'll be a great addition to next year's squad.

Iron, who are you talking about? Who redshirted? And who're the new recruits? Kevin Young is 6'8"--a SF, yes? Who's replacing him?

Huge blow to LMU, not acknowledged as such, as Young was their ever ready energy guy. LMU will still be a challenge even without Young as will SMC with the addition of the new faces and the 2 USD transfers.

It will be a heck of a year in the WCC.

Go!! Zags!!!

The two guys we have coming back from red shirt are Quincy Lawson and Edgar Garibay. Lawson is a 6-6 guy with a 7foot wing span and probably the most athletic guy we have. Garibay a started out well but went out with a Acl injury he is back with 25 pounds of extra muscle. Recruiting wise we have a pg named Anthony Ireland coming in. He had all of the A-10 and Boston College after him. Ayodeji Egbeymi a under size SF just committed. He has two big east offers and two other big east schools monitoring them. We will probably add one more guys...Aziz Nidaye or Godwin Okonji.
