Q&A re: Daye and Poling

Will Austin Daye be successful with Gonzaga next year or just another player? Also, will Andy Poling be good enough to be a Zag?

"Austin Daye could be a dominant player for Gonzaga. Austin Daye is a very talented player who will be successful at Gonzaga. He is long and extremely skilled, a great shooter with range and a terrific passer. In fact, Daye has a lot of the same physical traits that Adam Morrison possesses. We rank Daye as a five-star because if he improves his strength and develops a tougher side to his game, he can be a dominant player for Gonzaga. It will take some time for this to happen, but there is no reason why Daye won't contribute immediately to Gonzaga's cause.

"As for Andy Poling, yes, he is going to be good enough. I was impressed with what I saw from the near 7-footer this past weekend in Las Vegas. He is very skilled, he works hard and competes, but he is weak physically. Poling has been dealing with a strange illness that has prevented him from putting on weight. The word, however, is that he is doing better.

"Hopefully Gonzaga will lock Daye and Poling in the weight room with a full-time buffet for about six months."

How do we know if Andy is going to be able to play if his "mystery" condition has not even been diagnosed yet? Doesn't sound to promising to me, but I hope he continues to improve.

Oh my gosh! Reminded me of when I got married (Dec 28). We went to Christmas mass, and afterwards Fr Ron said to us "see you on Saturday", only to fall on the ice and break his leg so badly that he needed surgery and traction. We were oblivious to what had happened, since we had already left when he had this terrible injury. The next day I received a phone call from the deacon who said "Fr Ron was supposed to marry you on Saturday", and I replied "WAS supposed to?" Thankfully we weren't having Communion (my heathen husband is a Methodist) so the deacon stepped in and subbed. I didn't even meet him until I walked down the aisle to get married!

This is the first time I have seen the words Downs and church in the same sentance. Now I have no idea whether or not Downs goes to church nor do I care, for all I know if this happens he was just on his way to Zips for a Papa Joe and as he passed in front of St. Als in December........

I hate to jinx him or something, but it seems like every year some player or other gets an injury or stress fracture or something in early fall practice. I hate to say it, but I think Daye is a candidate for this. He'll already be putting stress on his body (I'd imagine) by trying to bulk up quickly, then add the rigors of his first few college practices and how thin he is... I really hope not because I'm excited to see him play, but my guess is he'll be bit by the injury bug.

If given the choice I would rather take a very skilled 6 foot 10 inch freshmen with a developing frame than a 6 foot 10 inch freshmen who had athletics but not the skills. He will come around and so will the bulk-but the post skills are already there

Kids do seem to have an amazing ability to bounce back from illness. Unlike us old folks!
