Just because I'm horrible at navigating gozags, where does Matt stand all time in total minutes played and minutes per game. Any idea? He's gotta be up there.

There's no list readily available for all time minutes / MPG to compare him against.

do you know how many games were won when he started ?? Must be more than a 100.....most by a Zag ?

Interesting question.

I went to statsheet.com for most of this, but it's hard finding an easy reference for who starting each game.

GU has had 103 wins in his 4 years but didn't start in 15 his frosh season and missed 2 this year and 1 last year, so at very most could have only had 85 wins as a starter.

The 4 year players who would have the most chance would be from the '02 Zags w 109 wins but they had no 4 year senior

Then we go to the '04 (Blake - started all but 4, Cory - not a 4 year starter, or Kyle - also not a 4 year starter), 05' (Ronny - not a 4 year starter, or Brian - only started senior night) or the '06 Zags (Floyd - only started senior night) all with 107 wins in their 4 years.

Then there's the 2007 class (Raivio and Mallon - neither 4 year starters) with 106 total wins

The 2009 (Pargo - not a 4 year starter, Heytvelt - missed lots of games) and 2003 (Gourde - not a 4 year starter) classes with 105 wins

The 2001 Team (Calvary and Spink - neither 4 year starters) with 104

And the 2008 (Pendo - not a 4 year starter) team with 103

So looks like its Blake with at minimum 101 wins by far and away.

I suspect that Matt is in likely #2 all time though actually given that he basically was a starter for 3 and a half seasons.

I'm sorry...perhaps it would be much simpler to ask how many wins did he play in....??? Or is that essentially the same answer...?....who are the all time winning zags ? Blake....etc....

In the short term, I think we're going to miss him a lot. In the long term, his all time status will likely be diminished. Nothing against him though, gosh, he was an amazing zag. Hope he gets a contract in the pros.

The only problem about trying to figure out how many games he started and won compared to how many total is whether or not you account for exhibition games. ESPN doesn't account for them but gozags.com does. I'm a huge fan of stats so I went through ESPN.com's list of games for Matt, freshman to senior year.

Freshman Year:
11-8 as a starter
12-3 coming off the bench
(the only issue with freshman year is that they didn't have the lists for the rice game)

Sophomore year:
24-8 as a starter
1-0 on the bench (he didn't start that game)

Junior year:
25-6 as a starter
1-0 off the bench (didn't start senior night)

Senior Year:
26-7 as a starter
1-0 on the bench (didn't play Davidson)

For a total of 101-32 (again from ESPN.com). Now factor in the "exhibition" games from gozags.com and he actually ends up with a cumulative total of 106-32. I think in Bud Withers article, he left out three of the exhibition games. It's so hard to figure out what constitutes a "game" and what doesn't. All in all, a very impressive record either way and a very impressive career. I, for one, am going to miss seeing him playing in the MAC.
