Hello friend!
Hello friend, i found you
GUCrew24;Zaghawk shock;ID ZAGFAN;goodne;GUfan_1514

Confirm Outstanding Receipt
mattthea892 has requested a read receipt - Confirm?

I did not open the link or confirm the receipt, figuring they would then know they had reached a real person.

Please take care of this.

I also received the same type of PM this AM. From a sender in Liberia named mattthia892. Same message: "Hello friend, I found you. He also requested a read receipt? I took no action other than deleteing the message. This must be a security breach of some kind.

Attention!
Hello, my friend. I found report about your computer's security at:

shock;ID ZAGFAN

Please, take this into account.
Best regards, Forum Member )

Since it says banned, I assume it has already ben taken care of. I find this one more scary because it tries to get you to open the link by saying your security has been breached.

From Super Mod Kitz' Announcement posted on the MBB Forum:

All, please watch out for spam PMs being sent by what appear to be administrator accounts. I recommend being careful opening links or replying to them unless you recognize the username. You can always search the members list to verify.

If you come across anything that you believe is spam, please report it to the mods and we will ban the user.

Sincerely, Forum Administration www.guboards.spokesmanreview.com.

I disabled the link he posted in the real PM by removing the "com" up above ... :D Can't be too safe!

If IPs are checked, it's likely to turn up that most of the spam artists use anonymous havens in Northern Europe OR that they have Russian or other associated Eastern European e-mail accounts. Nearly all are likely to turn up on StopForumSpam.com as problem offenders. Ever since October 2008 when some robo-spam programs learned how to decode the twisty letters and numerals of the registration process, the vBulletin boards around the country have been under assault. The registrants tend to fully utilize the "profile" questionnaire to put up links to their porn or dubious Rx websites and provide their e-mail info. All traps.

One "trick" to help defeat the people employing robospammers is to add a question to the registration process, as part of the "profile". For a taxpayer watchdog group's forums, where we'd had to turn on Comment Moderation for a time while doing research into solutions after the onslaught of October '08, I inserted the question: what is the first letter of the town that this messageboard is all about? It took an English-speaking "human mind" to answer that one.

For the Zags board, a truly simple question like "What college team is this messageboard about?" -- asked as part of the registration process -- would probably eliminate about 90% of the problem registrations from ever happening. It takes an "Administrator" with full access to be able to perform that action, I think.

Lots of good tips can be found at:

If you post spam messages or PMs here, please make sure to not include the actual url (web address) in the message. First of all, it invites people to click on the link and risk exposure to a malicious site; second, many spambot try to get urls spread across the internet as widely as possible in an attempt to increase search engine hits on the listed website. We don't want to contribute to that.

There needs to be a report spam option for PMs on the forums.
Doesn't seem safe to just have people delete these messages and not report them anywhere.

In the corner of each post you will see an image that looks like this http://guboards.spokesmanreview.com/images/buttons/report.gif. That is the 'Report Post' link that will send a link to the post along with your message to the admins and mods. We can blast it from there.

I could be very blind, but I see no report post/message function for private messages.

Neither when the message is open or when looking at the in box.

Well, correct you are. I missed the 'PMs' part in your post. Best option is to PM admins with info so they can be zapped. Recent changes seemed to have cleared the problem up pretty well, though, so hopefully this becomes moot.
