You guys meet anywhere special to watch the games?

Not that I am aware of. My 3 roommates and I are all GU grads and would love a place to gather with fellow fans and watch the games though to the best of my knowledge none exists. There is however, on occasion, a game viewing that is organized by the alumni association. They are only for the big games and are way to far and few between for me though. It would be nice if we could establish a bar that is the GU bar and where you know that you can go there and find the game on and people there to watch it with.

Yeah it would. Getting tired of sitting on my couch watching the games. I'm relatively new to the area, so i'm not too familiar with the Portland bars as far as sports bars go.

Over the years interested GU fans in Portland have gathered at A & L Sports Pub at 5933 NE Glisan St. However, I have not been there this year and I was not one of the organizers, so you may want to ask around before driving down there. A&L used to be pretty smokey but with the change in Oregon law I assume that is no longer an issue.

A few of us have tried to gather at Big Al's in Vancouver to watch GU games, but only when the games were not on "regular" TV. Now that virtually every GU game is on ESPN or FSNW there has not been much interest in Big Al's that I know about anyway.

There used to be a couple of groups of Zags that would venture out:

A & L Pub
5933 NE Glisan Portland, OR 97213
Phone: (503) 234.7607
or
On Deck Sports Bar & Grill
910 NW 14th Ave Portland, OR 97029
Phone: (503) 227.7020

My Portland Zag connection left town, so let me know if you choose a place, I would love to join you when I am in town.
(75Zag beat me to it!)

I've gone to OnDeck for a couple games this season, but haven't had seen many other Zags. It's a decent bar, has a good happy hour till 6:30, and would be a great place to meet on the west side.

Anyone interested in getting together for the Duke game? Big Al's sounds like a great place to watch it to me!

I would love to meet up for the Duke game, however, I believe i'll be out of town for it.

I am more than willing to meet anyone there for the Wake Forest game though!

A word of caution on Big Al's. First I like it. But they have large screens, medium screens and some flat panels spinkled around the large sports bar area. If there are "BCS" type activities going on simultaneously to a GU game, the GU game is typically shown on one of the smaller (or just plain small) monitors, while the bigger groups and fan clubs get the center screens and the big screens. The last time we tried to gather GU folks for a game, Navy was playing somebody (maybe Army) and Big Al's was packed with rival service academy fans and our little GU group was shunted to a single table in the corner to watch the GU game on a small screen with little or no cocktail service. The time before that the Dallas Cowboys were playing Green Bay on Thursday night football and the GU group was pretty much squeezed out of existence by drunken Cowboy fans.

Kind of a pain - better than no game at all - but I find the other venues more fun.

True. That was the case when i was there too. On top of that, they tend to have pretty high beer prices.

There's been half-hearted attempts to set of location in the past that never panned out. Personally, I'd love to have a designated "Zags bar" to go watch the games at, I know there are several like that in Seattle.

Anyways, I live in SW, so if a location is ever decided on the west side, I'll try my best to make an appearance.

I'd recommend the upstairs at the bridgeport brewery, but half the people there insist on watching their trailblazers get beaten down every night than watch quality ball.

I think one of the major things we need to figure out is a central location for all of us. Someone said they live in SW my roommates and I live in the Couve as I know someone else on here does. Any suggestions about a good central bar/pub?

I live in the 'couv as well. From what i know, Big Al's is hands down the best bar to watch at. As i said, i'm not too familiar with the bars in Portland. Let's name a location so we can watch the game tomorrow.

Tomorrow might not be our best bet as the game will be on the exact same time as Alabama vs Florida. You'll find it difficult convincing a bar to turn that one off.

I think we should certainly plan on meeting for the Duke game (at least).

I do NOT like Big Als', for the reasons listed above. They have a great setup IN THEORY, but it doesn't work in practice.

Here is my argument for the A&L. (60th and Glisan).
It's close enough for anyone on the Eastside, and Vancouver.
It's not downtown Portland, which is a pain for parking, esp during the holidays.
From Beaverton, it's not too much of a pain to get on I-84.

The A&L is large enough to give Zags fans space, and they have several big-screens and projectors. (Not always the best quality, but it's big.)
They have been accomodating.......at least they were a few years ago, esp if we call in advance.

It used to be incredibly smoky, but that's not an issue anymore.

If anyone does want to show up there on Saturday for Wake Forrest.....post here..........If anyone does post, I will show up.
Can we get 5 people??

Broadway Grill in NE. Haven't been yet, but if you're a member of the Portland Alumni Chapter they will send you an email notification about the game watches. If not, you can come to my house as long as you don't mind putting up with me on my hands and knees 3 feet in front of the tv yelling at the screen.

I called them, and told them we'll have a few.

She said they will accomodate us...........knowing the other events going on at the same time. (Blazer game isn't until the night, anyway.)

WAZ - WHERE HAVE YOU BEEEEEEEN?
Everything this man says is true.
A&L has always been very kind to us whether it's 4 or 25 of us. Calling ahead to reserve a screen or big tv was always a good idea, and as long as people raised their hands in threads we could usually be pretty accurate with numbers.

Edit to add: game's at 2:30? I'll be at the A&L. See ya there.
